Strong Female Characters In THE AVENGERS 2 Says Scarlett Johansson

In a new Captain America: The Winter Soldier interview with Scarlett Johansson, the Black Widow actress says "you'll see some pretty strong female characters in Avengers 2 coming up." Is she referring to just the Scarlet Witch or more female heroes/villainess?

Avengers 2 more female heroes

The interview begins with Scarlett discussing the resolute dedication needed during training and filming that's required to make sure you look the part and can fit into your costume. From there, things get a little more interesting. When discussing all the cosplaying female fans in attendance at the Captain America 2 screening, Johansson revealed that:

"There were all kinds of characters [at the premiere]. There was a Ms. Marvel, there was a Wasp and a lot of Black Widows out there...one thing I got from all of them is that there is space- they're excited to see [a] female represented in these movies. I think Marvel's kind of heard that note and you'll see some pretty strong female characters in Avengers 2 coming up."

The natural assumption would be that Johansson is referring to her Avengers: Age of Ultron costar Elizabeth Olsen who is confirmed to play Wanda Maximoff aka Scarlet Witch. But is it possible another female hero or villain will receive meaningful screen time in The Avengers sequel? Perhaps Cobie Smulders' Maria Hill will be given more to do this time around? Or will some other Marvel Cinematic Universe heroines make a cameo?

Smart move. Guys are going to these movies anyway, but to bring the girlfriend/wife? That's a billion dollar idea. An added bonus to having Joss at the helm.

These are the female characters which should be Marvel's priority, IMO:

Enchantress, Wasp, Ms. Marvel, Mockingbird, and She-Hulk.

Well lets see:
Black Widow
Scarlet Witch

hmmm oh ScarJo are you casually hinting some confirmation to the rumors that Carol Danvers and She-Hulk actually come to fruition in this film ? or are you referring to Maria Hill and a possible Madame Hydra ?

So can we get a Ms. Marvel or Black Widow movie now? Marvel will really make heads spin if they can get a female lead and a black male lead befor DC does. Hell, kill two birds with one stone by making a black female lead in a movie.

Kevin Feige needs I get a female superheroo film out there now. You have a bevy of female characters to work with. DC is about to intro WW with a semi- cameo and a solo pick soon. Marvel women are better characters than DC women. Come on Feige...we need a Widow solo film or a Ms.Marvel film

Ms. Marvel movie needs to happen. (but NOT as Captain Marvel; Mar-Vell's story needs to be told before she takes that title)

@Maximus101, I couldn't disagree more...

@the1egend1ives, the obvious choice would be Storm, but due to Marvel doesn't own her film rights, which black female hero do you think they could use in the MCU as a lead?

Lost in Translation, Her, all those smaller films earlier in her career, etc. She's actually very talented, and people forget that.

DC's women are 10x better than Marvel's women. Their animated universe proves it, and their cinematic universe will show you why very soon.

Exhibit A: Faora. She's probably the biggest badass with an X chromosome in a CBM since the Matrix's Trinity.

If they were to do Ms. Marvel, and give her the appropriate powers, it would, in effect, make her a pretty suitable replacement for Hemsworth's Thor come a possible 4th Avengers movie.

@AzraelAbyss: Hemsworth has said he'll play the character for as long as the fans want him to. However, story-wise if Thor was unable to come to Earth for some reason (off fighting in another realm?) Ms. Marvel would definitely be a suitable "powerhouse" to fill his role on the team.

Maximus101 And how does an opinion of her acting skills play into how strong the character she's playing is? I thought that was determined by the script. Please do keep in mind that the strength of her character and the strength of her performance are 2 entirely different aspects...

Wonder Woman in Man of Steel 2 is going to be so intense. If you have seen how Zack Snyder handles his female characters in the past then you have an idea. He will up the intensity with that film. It looks like Joss Whedon is getting a head start though. Remember faora? that's how flash and quiksilver should move. I do hope the superspeed effects will improve though.

I'd like to see a scene where Captain/Ms. Marvel arm wrestles Thor (and beats him). She really is the only plausible Marvel movie hero that is potentially as powerful as Superman, plus she can have fun doing it (which DC seems to not want to do right now).

@ProfessorX
Photon is very underrated as a character. I'd like to see something in the vein of Nextwave in the movies (even if it's just a One-Shot or something.

After seeing what Zack did with Malin Ackerman I have zero doubt that Gal Gadot will kick much ass in some bad ass action sequences...will she WOW us with a pitch perfect monologue ? probably not but I want to see Wonder Woman beat ass first- let Superman and Batman talk it out. Diana talks with her blade!

SugarYumYum - 3/23/2014, 7:59 AM
Well, duh. The only question is whether those characters will just be Widow, Hill, and Scarlet or if we'll get Danvers and maybe Ross as well. Don't expect to see Wasp until A-3.

GeekyCheekyChic - 3/23/2014, 7:59 AM
Joss does know female characters though and completely sold how bad ass Widow is....A LOT tougher than "why are you even here" Hawkeye
So I would love to see how Joss handles:
Carol Danvers
Madame Hydra
She Hulk
Jocasta
Mockingbird
Scarlet Witch
Wasp

Joss is known for creating and utilizing very strong female characters. You couldn't ask for a better writer/director to introduce some female heavy-hitters. He's done a great job with Widow, and Maria Hill, so here's hoping for a total badass Scarlet Witch and Ms. Marvel!
