Making an Avengers film has been talked about since Nick Fury had his cameo at the end of Iron Man. Five years later, the dream is unleashed in theaters. Several have wondered if this film was possible but with the audience and critics loving it, an Avengers franchise film seems very possible. How did I like it? Read on.

Performances
This film has soooooo many characters, I mean it actually has 10 main characters. That’s a lot for any film, yet some how Joss makes us feel and understand all these characters. There is never any one person out shining all the others because each character and performance is so good they all are equally amazing. But lets get to the individual performances.

Chris Evans:
Again, Evans surprises me how well he portrays the good man of the Avengers. While he doesn't have much time to remorse over his time lost in the world, he does an amazing job at showing how this time needs Captain America. I also liked that he seemed to be able to fight better, than in The First Avenger and it truly shows you why in the comics he trained most of the Marvel heroes. Tis sad though that he doesn’t say a certain battle cry, but they didn’t in the first Avengers comic, so it’s not a big deal. Just something we can look forward to them doing in sequels.

Robert Downey Jr:
It was hard to conceive anyone else as Tony Stark in the first two Iron Man movies, but the Avengers only strengthens his role as the genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist. He probably has some of the most funny dialogue in the film. Also Iron Man's action scenes put his solo movies action sequences to shame.

Chris Hemsworth:
Chris pulls off Thor amazingly, easily surpassing his excellent performance in his solo film. He also gets to have a bit more of a challenge with Hulk, Iron Man, and alien serpent ships to fight.

Mark Ruffalo:
I’ve got to tell you, I nearly cried when I heard that Ruffalo was replacing Norton. I figured that Ruffalo would be the one flaw in the Avengers movie. But he’s not. He’s the highlight. He plays Banner perfectly, in fact, no offence to Norton’s brilliant performance as Banner in the Incredible Hulk, you completely forget that Norton ever played Banner in the first place. And this isn’t even the great part yet, Ruffalo plays the Hulk. If you thought that the Incredible Hulk’s Hulk was amazing (since he actually talked and seemed to have some intelligence), you’ll be blown away by Hulalo (I’m calling him that from now on. :P). Not only is he intelligent but he’s also funny. While Downey does have some of the best dialogue in the movie, Hulk doesn’t need dialogue to be funny. And when he does speak he totally steals the show. Marvel needs to make a new Hulk movie. Nuff said.

Scarlett Johanson:
While I didn’t mind her performance in Iron Man 2, she seemed to be out of place without much to do. But in the Avengers, she’s really another highlight. She makes Natasha such an unexplored interesting character, I really want a movie which explores her past. There would be several ways to do this, either a Shield movie, a Hawkeye and Black Widow movie, or just a solo Black Widow movie. I would probably think that the second option would be best, but don’t think for a minute she’s not a good enough character to have her own solo movie. Yes, she is that good. I would also love if they made a Winter Solider movie with her in it. That just be fabulous.

Jeremy Renner:
Except for a brief cameo in Thor, Renner is a completely new character to be explored in Avengers and Joss does explore him well. While it is slightly sad that for about half the film he has no character at all only being one of Loki’s controlled minions, for the half he is in the film he does an amazing job. Hawkeye is actually one of my favorite characters from the comics, so while I was slightly disappointed that he doesn’t get as much character development as I would have liked, he does an excellent job as our favorite bow and arrow sharpshooter. He really needs a film of his own or with Widow, he could also be in a Shield movie as well.

Samuel L. Jackson:
I always thought that Jackson was fantastic as Nick Fury in his previous short cameos in other films. All he does is strengthen his performance in the Avengers and I can’t wait to see him in more films. He brings heart to the character and does just an amazing job.

Cobie Smulders:
With only appearing in TV shows under her belt, it’s surprising at how good Smulders is in this role. While her character isn’t delved into that much, she does play the part of council controlled Shield director well. Can’t wait to see more from her as Maria Hill.

Clark Gregg:
Again amazing performance except that I can’t tell you about it because almost all of his performance is a spoiler. All I can say is hopefully we can see him again in other movies…

Tom Hiddleston
Continuing his excellent performance from Thor, Hiddleston makes his character Loki, much nastier and evil. Which while his performance of finding himself was amazing in Thor, it’s good to see him finally be the evil, nasty, infamous brother of Thor from the comics. Can’t wait to see him again in Thor 2 and hopefully other movies.

Story
It’s amazing that this didn’t just turn into a crazy, mindless, action flick like some transforming robots I’m not mentioning (oh wait I did mention it didn’t I). But even with all the action the story is well crafted and interesting. I really love that you really don’t know what Loki’s plan is. You try to figure out Loki’s plan with the Avengers and in so doing that it brings you into the movie, making you feel what they feel.

Action
The action, is just fantastic, amazing, mind blowingly awesome, (I could go on all day to describe this). It is honestly probably THE BEST action scenes I have EVER scene. And yes, I’ve seen a LOT of good action scenes. Way better than those puny robots who transform.

Overall
Weather you are a comic book fan or not, you will enjoy this movie. In fact you would have to be absolutely crazy if you don’t. The people I went with the movie to loved it and went on and on talking about it and they aren’t comic book geeks in any way. I could rate this movie a googolplex out of ten (because it deserves every bit of it) but instead (because I of a shortage of people in the world to take pictures of and shop into my rating picture) I’m going to rate it ten Avengers actors out of ten.

Be sure to watch both the mid-credits scene and the after-credits scene. Both are awesome.

Good review! One thing, it's Chris Evans not Evens. Agreed on all the points about the actors.

Thanks to all of you for the kind words.

bgg1175 My thoughts exactly. :D Fantastic film. Joss would have deserved praise if this film was just watchable, where as it's quite an amazing film as well. I'd say it was re-watchable, several times! :)

MrRogers Agreed. That or Hulk punching Thor. Too funny. Hulk really stole the show in this movie.

Good review, I saw the movie yesterday and I enjoyed it as well the only thing I wanted to see more of was Loki's complete plan with the cube cause I highly doubt he was just gonna give it up like that I would have liked to see the double cross he was planning but otherwise it was good movie.

Well, I'm not as impressed as everyone else. I felt the characters were written better in their respective solo outings. The framing of many shots were awkward. But the Act Three Battle was spectacular, fun ride. ILM and WETA did a great job. Stereoscopic conversion was the best I've experienced.

79% C+

Even though I can't agree with your assessment, your review is still well written, categorized, and the "ten Avengers actors out of ten" rating is clever.

I'm MORE than impressed.

I can only think of two directors under as much pressure to deliver as Joss Whedon.

1. Francis Ford Coppola: Godfather 2
2. George Lucas: Star Wars: Episode 1 Phantom Menace

One succeeded. One failed.

Whedon had the weight of franchise on him and herculean task of making this thrown together gumbo taste good...and it's delicious! Whedon had to tell his story in ONE 2 and half hour film, where Peter Jackson and Christopher Nolan got THREE.

What did we get?
We got an intelligent plot that didn't insult us.
We got three dimensional characters with vulnerability, baggage and motivation-with actors that drew it out, especially Scarlett Johanson. There is so much depth to what she brought to her time on the screen. Like you said in your review, she was almost a throw-away "hire a model" role in Iron Man 2. Here, she gets to ACT...and the sister's got skill.
And of course, action sequences that are not just top notch, but legendary.

The prior Marvel individual films were just foreplay to this one.

If there was one thing that disappointed me a bit it was that Thor seemed to be somewhat upstaged by the Hulk. The old days in the comics when they had rough parity in terms of strength seem long gone.

Also at one point Loki was humiliated by the Hulk.

Certainly the Hulk's good showing and being well received by the audiences increases the likelihood of a future Hulk movie. Which was of course the intent.
