What Is Loki Wielding In Latest Avengers Set Photos? Could It Be...An Infinity Gem?!

The photos taken during last nights filming of The Avengers show a mysterious blue object at the end of Loki's staff. While it's easy to assume this is Cosmic Cube related, is he in fact wielding the Infinity Gauntlet?!

Looking at the set photos posted earlier today got me thinking. Just what exactly is that at the end of the staff Loki is wielding? It's doesn't look like the Cosmic Cube in my opinion. (although there is of course nothing to say that they won't alter the look completely during post production with the use of CGI) Instead, I believe that this is instead one of the Infinity Gems...specifically the "Mind" one. Here's the picture and what's most interesting about the blue gem.

"It allows the user to greatly strengthen and enhance mental and psionic power and access the thoughts and dreams of other beings. Backed by the Power Gem, the Mind Gem can access all minds in existence simultaneously."

And here are some details about the rest of them.

Could this be how Loki ends up facing off against each of the team? After all, the bar scene described in the footage shown at D23 could have very easily been Loki visiting the mind of Tony Stark to mock him...the same applies for the rest of his encounters. Even more interesting specifically about the blue gem is that it allows its wielder to access the thoughts of other beings, possibly explaining how Loki manages to amount an army. And whose to say Loki doesn't have access to the rest of them throughout the movie. Again, it would go some way to explaining how he ends up taking on the super powered team and would be the PERFECT set up to introduce Thanos after the credits.

Above is the Marvel Studios version of the Infinity Gauntlet which was featured in THOR, and displayed at the San Diego Comic-Con last year.

See the resemblance between the biggest blue gem and the one of the at end of his staff? Now, I'm not the only person to have noticed this. Speculation is currently running pretty rampant all over the internet, and this would certainly lend some credibility to the rumored appearance of Thanos in The Avengers. There could be many reasons why Loki is using one of the gems as a weapon (perhaps the Cosmic Cube plays a smaller role than we originally thought - what if he uses it to retrieve the gauntlet from Asgard, which would also open up a pathway for Thor to return to Earth?!) or it could alternatively have absolutely NOTHING to do with them. I guess we'll have to wait and see until next year! For now, please feel free to share your thoughts in the usual place.

Maybe it will lead to Thanos in the sequel. I'm starting to doubt there will be another villain. I think it will just be Loki and an army of aliens that don't have a name.

CraptainAmerica - 8/23/2011, 11:57 AM
Agreed @booyah

Could help in taking control of Hulk and making the alien race 'agree' to help attack earth.

This could also be why the infinity gauntlet was omitted from Odin's vault in 'Thor'. Unless it was there and Loki returns to obtain it?

Oh the possibilities

To me it looks more purple... Which would make sense it being a "space" gem.

Thanos doesn't HAVE to be the villain in this movie for Loki to have one (or more) of the gems. Loki's "Army" could still be another group of aliens. But it would be an awesome way to make Loki powerful while dropping hints about Thanos in future movies.

I really hope the Gauntlet in the image above is not an actual prop from the movie. Looks horrible.

WOW!..MAYBE ALL THE GEMS ARE NOT IN THE GAUNTLET IN ODINS VAULT..
THEY DID MENTION EARLIER THAT LOKI WAS IN A "MUSEUM" CAUSING CHAOS IN THE "GERMANY SCENE"???

The guys at latinoreview seem pretty convinced that Loki will be leading the Skrulls and that Thanos will also be a villain. I just read there article on the Loki footage and they talk about it as if were fact.

The Infinity Gauntlet is in THOR but only for a moment.

I don't want Thanos because if Darkseid ever finds his way into a DC film, people will think he's a Thanos rip off and he's not.

You have too much faith in DC films, you'll never see Darkseid. Thanos will hit long before Darkseid does.

maybe you never know,i think the infinity gauntlet is the greatest prop ever created for a cbm.

it could be the space gem the last time we saw loki he was falling into outer space so he may of stole that gem,but saying that if the gauntlet was complete wouldn't you just use the infinity gauntlet.

Not sure I believe Latino review. Hiddleston said he meets every Avenger individually and there's a point where he faces them all when he "knew that was the moment [he] was making the Avengers".

I think and alien invasion and Loki are more than enough. Working in the cosmic cube has been the build up to the Avengers. Thanos would be a worthy nemesis for a second outing and he acquiring the gems for the gauntlet would be and great point to build toward

Sto0pidpenguinpro - 8/23/2011, 12:12 PM
It looks more like the spaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaace Gem, which would make sense since Loki IS the TRICKSTER, being in several places at once. He is known for "multiplying" himself through trickery, this could be another spin on that. Also, it could help transport sentient beings to Earth from the bowels of other universes.

The mind gem wod be great for taking control of the
hulk

But the space gem would be good as the way Loki referred to in Thir as a means forgetting on and off Asgard

Thats pretty selfish since Thanos is his own entity and Darkseid will never be in a DC movie. Superman cant get beyond Luthor or Zod.
