Glasgow, Scotland, has been transformed into Gotham City for Batgirl, and work continues there on Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah's DC Extended Universe debut. Over the weekend, we caught a first look at Michael Keaton - or, more likely, a stand-in - suited up as Batman, but those scenes don't appear to be set in the present day.
In the video below, we see more of J.K. Simmons as Jim Gordon, but the actor has clearly been made to look younger for a flashback sequence. He's shown embracing a young girl who definitely appears to be his daughter, Barbara, and while Batman only briefly appears, it seems the Caped Crusader may have rescued her (no doubt setting the stage for Babs to become a vigilante).
We still don't know whether Batman is going to show up to mentor Batgirl, but that was said to be the plan in early reports about the movie.
In this new DC Extended Universe, Keaton's Bruce Wayne has clearly been serving as Gotham City's Dark Knight for decades. It's apparent now that The Flash will rewrite this shard world's history, removing Ben Affleck's Caped Crusader from continuity and making use of the original big screen Batman in Batgirl and likely multiple other franchises moving forward.
After his brief cameo in Justice League, seeing more of Simmons as Gordon promises to be an absolute joy. He now joins Pat Hingle as one of the only actors to play the GCPD Commissioner alongside more than one version of Batman.
Batgirl is expected to be released on HBO Max later this year, but that has yet to be confirmed.
