GOTHAM KNIGHTS Star Stephen Oyoung Teases What Fans Can Expect From His Take On Red Hood - EXCLUSIVE

We recently caught up with Gotham Knights star Stephen Oyoung (Mister Negative in Marvel's Spider-Man), and the actor shared some insight into what fans can expect from his take on Jason Todd/Red Hood...

Stephen Oyoung is perhaps best known for his standout performance as Mister Negative in Marvel's Spider-Man, but he's now making the leap to the DC Universe for Gotham Knights. The highly anticipated game, believed to be a loose Batman: Arkham Knight sequel/spinoff, will see gamers take control of Nightwing, Batgirl, Robin, and Red Hood, with the latter played by Stephen.

Recently, we had the opportunity to talk to the Gotham Knights star by email, and had to ask both what fans can expect from his Red Hood, and how much of his work is inspired by what's come before.

"The team at WB Montreal is doing everything they can to make Red Hood as dynamic a character as possible. He's not a one note guy," Stephen explained before teasing a deep dive into Jason Todd. "We all know Jason's backstory, his anger, his disappointments, his pain. So the temptation is just to lean super heavy into that. But there's more to him. That's been super fun to play with."

"As far as Arkham Knight, that portrayal is iconic. I'd be lying if I didn't say I'm not influenced by it. I think about it a lot. But at the end of the day I don't think anyone wants a copy of someone else's performance, no matter how close it is. I think I have a realistic base in my action-performing/ stunt background, so I try to bring that kind of energy to the scenarios. Basically this is just a long way of saying I'm trying to steal what's great from Arkham Knight and bring some of my own flavor to it!"

Now, you obviously don't need us to tell you what an iconic, beloved character Jason is, and Stephen went on to elaborate on what we should be on the lookout for when it comes to his interpretation.

"Without getting into too much trouble I can say the writing team is phenomenal! They're finding ways to surprise you. Again, we're all hyper aware of bringing out the humanity in our Jason and making him as emotionally nuanced and dynamic as possible while still honoring his painful past." However, that doesn't mean we won't get some action! "And yes, he's handy with guns!"

We'll have much more to share with you from Stephen soon, but in the meantime, you can find him on Twitter @mrstephenoyoung and Instagram @stephenoyoung. The actor is also involved with OperationSmile.org, a worthy cause we highly recommend you check out!

I really don’t understand why they even had to go the route of Arkham Knight in that game. They weren’t even clever with how they dropped clues of it being Jason Todd.

Hopefully Oyoung’s role as Red Hood is a good one and good luck to him.

@satsuinojxa - I just add it to the list of obvious reveals being obvious: Khan in 'Into Darkness.' Blofeld in 'Spectre.'

Some reveals take deft writing to pull off, AK being Todd should've been told at the beginning to give the game a 'grudge match' feel.

@GothamSon -
That would have been an interesting concept. I would have preferred AK being an original character introduced into the verse.
Sorta like how the Phantasm was introduced through the TAS.

This game should be pretty sweet.

Hope this guy does great. Jason is one of my favorite DC characters.

God I hope this isn't another Marvel's Avengers.

@RageDriver2401 - Well, they've already confirmed multiple villains. So it won't be like fighting Taskmaster and Abomination over and over.

@RageDriver2401 - The whole rpg look of it isn't giving me hope it's much different...

But at the very least, I expect the story and characters will be great.

Even unconsciously, I feel this game will be unfairly compared to the mechanics/ storyline of the Arkham series. This is a separate verse, doing its own thing. if it under-performs critically with fans, that's fine with me.

The Suicide Squad/ Justice League game is what I'm pinning my hopes to, for a continued series of AAA DC games in the Arkham-verse.

@GothamSon - Would that be unfair though? Because if one Batman game's mechanics are compared to anothers I think that's pretty fair.

@Nightwing1015 - Unfairly criticized, I should say (I read some youtube comments under the trailer taking shots at it.) Comparing this with an Arkham game is cool, but unfairly bashing gameplay based on a few teasers is harsh

@GothamSon - Well trailers exist to let you judge the game. If the gameplay looks sub-par I don't think it's unfair to criticise the game. You've got to decide whether you're buying it based on something after all

They should have either gone A.) Scarecrow or B.) Red Hood. Having just played thru Knight not long ago it struck me that Rocksteady had two potentially great stories to work with that don't really mesh together in the final product.
Scarecrow already feels like a different guy than we met in the Asylum.
The concept of the Arkham Knight character, on paper, ie the design, the name and vendetta are dope, but everyone knew it was Jason. Instead of doing something different with Red Hood they couldn't commit to a new character or a good Red Hood story.
It doesn't help that Knight/Hood was nowhere near the strategic or physical match for Bats that he was implied to be.

I'm intrigued. While it would have been nice to have another Arkham proper installment, I'm still excited and will be buying day 1. If there is one thing the folks at DC and WB do well its video games and animation.

I always loved the Arkham series and anticipated every game when they were announced all the way up to release, but I keep forgetting these two games were announced and only remember until I see article. Does not give me much hope for these games

Honestly, I would've much rather preferred the Damien Wayne game Montreal was working on. The concept art looked pretty cool.
