Does Gordon Know Bruce Wayne's Secret in The Dark Knight Rises?

....

After watching the trailer multiple times it seems pretty clear to me that Gordon knows Bruce Wayne is Batman.

First of all Gordon is talking to Wayne based on the fact that Bale is speaking like Bruce Wayne and not Batman.

If you listen closely Gordon is telling Wayne "We were in this together"...."then YOU were gone"

He goes on to say "The Batman must come back"

which Bruce(obviously speaking normal) replies "What if he doesn't exist anymore?"

If he was indeed Batman while visiting Gordon I highly doubt Gordon would be saying the Batman must come back. Given the fact that if Wayne was dressed as Batman he would already be back.

I believe Gordon know's Wayne is Batman and he is asking him to wear the mask once again. (presumably because he is still in hiding from the events in The Dark Knight)

Thoughts?

It's a trailer.. they cut the dialogue. Chances are what your saying is completely out of context.

Gordon is badly injured {smoke inhalation}.
My guess is... Bane sparked a fire during a Gotham Football game.
During which the Police are trying to evacuate everyone.
Either Bruce was at the game or at home when he got word {e.g. TV} of the incident.
In his suit and tie, he arrives at the hospital fearing Gordon may die.
With a black ski mask he walks into Gordon's room, Gordon knows it's Batman.
Batman has been in exile since the ending of TDK.
Bane and the LoS are tearing up the city.
Despite being know as Harvey's killer, Gordon pleads for Batman to return.
Bruce, with Gordon dying in front of him, realized that The Dark Knight must Rise from exile....
The Police and Catwoman cannot do it alone.
John Blake enters the room to see how his boss is doing when he sees Bruce in the ski mask there.
A quick scuffle ensues and Bruce heads for the window to escape.

Not sure what happened to that last post but...

@MrMurdock and Warrior

What? It is obvious that dialogue is from one scene. Each answer is a direct response to what the other said. Plus your argument makes no sense. Then who is Gordon talking to??? He is obviously talking to Wayne. Even if you just take into consideration his words and leave Wayne's out.

Apparently someone posted an article on here of a scene in TDR which was that scene, apparently what happens is Bruce goes to visit gordon in his lambo with a ski mask on, similar to his original outfit in batman begins when he goes to see gordon for the first time... and the cops try to apprehend him but he fights back and then goes to talk to gordon.

Potterman - 7/21/2011, 4:24 AM
@ Jbatesyfilmreviews and Despero

that scene could very well be true. and given the fact there are pictures of someone jumping out of a hospital makes it more plausible. My argument is that Gordon knows its Wayne and Wayne knows Gordon knows.

In the teaser you can see Bruce's bare hand resting on a chair (and the side of his head - his dark mask from the photos maybe?) So this should suggest that it definitely is not Batman he is speaking to

no! do you remember the pics from a hospital a few weeks back, of a man in a suit but wearing a balaclava or mask or something? blatantly bruce wayne. he goes in as bruce, but probably sticks the mask on when he gets in the room to keep his ID secret. then something happens and he has to escape out the window
Andyboy
Andyboy - 7/21/2011, 5:01 AM
so like, bruce has hung up his cape but still doesn't want anyone to know it was him - gordon included

@Potterman ~ I understand what you're saying, I just think it's 50/50 right now on whether he knows it's Bruce during that scene or if Bruce's identity is still concealed. Given he still has his mask on has me leaning more towards the latter.

Despero's theory makes the most sense. listen to him

I disagree. The whole point of Batman's stupid raspy deep voice is to cover up the billionaire identity. Everybody would know Wayne's voice. In the trailer Wayne clearly talks as normal. If he was still trying to conceal his identity he wouldnt be speaking as Wayne.

he kinda half whispers tho. when confronted with a man in a mask talking in hushed tones when you're struggling in hospital, i think it's fair to say you wouldn't necessarily know who it was, even if you knew them a bit

Potterman - 7/21/2011, 6:12 AM
@Andyboy

he obviously knows who is talking to. He says YOU were gone. YOU. which in all context means he knows who he is speaking to.

@Potterman ~ In The Dark Knight, his voice was much more aggressive than in Batman Begins, given that he's aggressively pursuing The Joker. His voice is meant to in-strike fear in his enemies. Let's say this film has him away from the cowl, trying to enjoy life, his voice will be a little be lighter. Plus he's in a hospital, not trying to attract much attention. Watch the trailer again, sounds like Bruce is hiding something.

Uh, yeah, he knows he is talking to the Batman. "You" as you, the guy I'm talking to, the Batman. Unless YOU think "you" means Bruce Wayne. I'm pretty sure "you were gone" means Batman's gone. Gordon wants the Batman in front of him, who is dressed in a suit and tie to return as the Batman they missed, the armored hero.

Now, I could be wrong, but think about it, the dialogue seems like Gordon is talking to him as Batman. If it were Bruce Wayne, I'd expect Gordon to be shocked that a billionaire was fighting crime alongside him. After all, Gordon knew Bruce as a child when his parents died in BB, I'd expect a few tears.
Potterman
Potterman - 7/21/2011, 6:35 AM
good points Despero. And you very well may be right.

But I think Nolan likes to take pieces of different comics and I wouldnt be surprised if he includes Gordon finding out about Wayne earlier in the film.

Gordon does know Wayne's secret in various storylines.
Trapdinsteel
Trapdinsteel - 7/21/2011, 6:37 AM
I think it is the scenario as described where Bruce is wearing a ski-mask to hide his identity speaks with Gordon and then leaves through a window.

The voice from the trailer speaking to Gordon in the hospital bed reminds me of when Bruce first meets up with Gordon and holds the stapler to the back of his head pretending it is a gun in Batman Begins. Slightly disguised definitely not the full on Bat-voice.

"He says YOU were gone. YOU. which in all context means he knows who he is speaking to."

yeah, he says YOU, because its bruce in a ski mask thing, but he knows its Batman he's talking to. doesn't necessarily mean he knows its Bruce Wayne. And since he's not in his Batman costume, it makes sense for him to be saying we need Batman.

it doesn't matter anyway, there's no way to be sure right now, so arguing the point is, well, pointless.

We are all good gentlemen here, just discussing a scene which has torn opinions. DC vs Marvel arguments are pointless, can't change the minds of bigots. Good day :P lol

Despero out!

If you watch the trailer, you can see Bruce's hand on the hospital bed for a second or two. Then the next cut of Gordon you don't see it. I like Desperos idea, sounds believable.

It's defiantly the ski mask thing, in which the police hear that some has broke into the room presumably Batman, thus meaning Bruce has to escape through the window. As shown in the set photos.

Guys, in both BTAS and the comic book, the character Batman creates false identites (other costumes and characters) to interact with criminals and other POIs. Why can't Gordon be talking to Batman in one of his disguises and not be Bruce Wayne. And for the theory of DNA getting tested...while logical Bruce Wayne himself would either have to be a criminal or have his DNA tested because he was a victim of a crime for him to be on record.

Another aspect that not many people noticed is that He IS talking to bruce wayne because you can see Wayne's Hand :p he's not wearing his suit. But Also keep in mind that Nolan might be tricking people and can easily put in audio that doesnt link with the scene being shown. ive seen many trailers where ive seen a person saying a sentence and when the movie has come out they dont show him saying it anymore but instead the focus of camera might be on someone else... so trailers can be tricky stuff..

I think Bruce has a mask on if its even him who is visiting gordon.
Figure A: looks like he has a mask, to me at least.

Figure B: I think this is the scene
