Future of the Franchise - Batman 4? How about a new trilogy?

There is already a lot of talk about Batman 4, who's going to be in it ect. I'm hoping that Batman 4 won't happen however, and this is why...

The third Nolan Batman film may not even be out yet but people are already talking about a fourth. “People” should be thinking about Superman 4 (how bad it was!) and X-Men and Spider-man 4 (how they never happened!) I would say that the chances of a 4th Batman film are very low. Instead there is a much higher possibility of a new trilogy. I think that they can go for either; 1, copy Nolan's style for another trilogy; 2, go for a new, camper trilogy or; 3, go for a "Batman Beyond" film:

1. Copy Nolan’s darker style and carry on with a new cast but a slightly new feel and possibly Robin. We know how much the public like a darker Batman thanks to the billion $$$’s that “The Dark Knight” made! This problem with this is that The Dark Knight Rises” would have to be a huge hit or at least a half-decent film. Then there’s other problems like the new director not being able to pull of Nolan’s style, the public not accepting new actors and/or new characters and plots not being very good. And of course the Joker couldn’t be brought back without huge upset.

2. Go for a more campy style to Batman. Many would argue that this wouldn’t work but the cartoon “Batman: The Brave and the Bold” is doing very well and so is Grant Morrison’s “Batman and Robin”. This style would make it easier to bring in Robin and be a refreshing change from Nolan. The Joker could also be reinvented to be scary in a camper-kind-of-way and Robin could easily be brought into the films which could possibly lead to exploration into the theory that Batman is still a kid inside and can’t mature into an adult (this is a real theory check it out online!). This would of course be very, very hard to pull of well without becoming silly-camp.

3. Another Batman cartoon, “Batman Beyond” is basically Batman’s son, who doesn’t know he’s Batman’s son, taking up the mantel of Batman in the future. The old Batman is an old man who works as his trainer. I could see this taking some hints from the best selling graphic novel “The Dark Knight Returns” and becoming a great film, taking Batman and placing him somewhere new. Again Cheesiness would be harder to pull off and the future would need to be gritty like “Blade Runner”.

Which one do I see happening? Well I would like to see a camper trilogy followed by a “Batman Beyond” trilogy which would tie up with the other three in a loose nine-film series. But what I see happening is a poor attempt at another Nolan like trilogy which will play around with Robin but not live up to expectations. Hopefully when that flops it will be followed by “Batman Beyond” , but we will have to wait and see!

@Exiles I haven't ever read it but I've heard it's brilliant and since it's Grant Morrison I believe the hype!

The first option you mentioned is the best. As long as they explore different aspects of Nolan's world. It's ok to play in someones sandbox but not to copy them.

When they do Joker again, I'd like a cross between Ledger's and Nicholson's portrayals. Make him look sorta comical, but have his personality just as deadly...like a amped version of Batman TAS' Joker.
I'd rather not see much campiness after Batman & Robin. Maybe to a character or two, but not the whole thing in general.
And I SO agree with the TDKR/BB thing. If TDKRises doesn't end with Batman retiring, I'd say make another movie where, in the end, he retires. Then go with adaptations to both TDKReturns and TDKSA. Then go ahead with a Batman Beyond trilogy.

no more batman unless its the dark knight returns or hush.

Make 3 movies of Bats in Nolans world with the third movie having Robin introduced, then do another trilogy of films with an ageing Batman and Robin soon becoming Nighwing and have TDKR as the final film of that trilogy and then hit them with a Batman Beyond trilogy to finish things off.

you contradicted yourself with 1 and 2...copy nolans darker style and make a campy style? sorry bro it doesn't work that way. there is no effective balance

@Weedbeater Hey sorry I said that "I think that they can go three ways with this: " and the listed three different ways they could go :)

I hope it doesn't get rebooted. WB should either go with another sequel, that could be directed by someone else, or WB should just leave the Batman franchise alone. What is wrong with leaving the franchise alone?

@golden123 while fans would love for them to leave the franchise alone WB is a major corporation and care about the billions of dollars which future films can make and not about fans feelings!

Version 1, absolutely. It can be done and done well with the right people involved.

Version 2, I would slap you just for even bringing it up.

Version 3, WTF?

People are already talking about BATMAN 4? Where the hell was I at? This is Nolan's last Batman film, so BATMAN will HAVE TO BE rebooted. There is no "BATMAN 4".

Please, comicbookmovie Gods, let there be no more Batman movies for a while. And let DC shed fame onto other characters.

SciFryer - 3/2/2011, 11:41 PM
@NeoBaggins Did you read the article? That is what I am saying! Haha :)
@Denn1s I mean the new films can copy Nolan OR go camp, I've changed the article to make this more clear hopefully.

What they should do is come back to franchise in 10 years, and have a Batman in his late 50's. He will be that gritty batman that deals with his age and the need for assistance aka a decent story line to bring in robin.

There are some hideous suggestions in the second part of the article and even more hideous in the comments section!
