Gary Oldman Says He Feels "Relief And Sadness" Retiring Jim Gordon In THE DARK KNIGHT RISES

In an interview with Moviefone the fan favorite actor who has portrayed Police Commissioner Jim Gordon brilliantly in both of Christopher Nolan's previous Bat flicks speaks about winding up the trilogy. He reveals how he feels, and how Jim himself would probably feel, now that it's all coming to an end. He also gives fans an idea on what to expect from the movie but much of it is stuff we have heard in previous interviews. He does say that even though Gordon has "cleaned up Gotham with the Harvey Dent Act, it's seething underneath" and all hell is about to break loose. Oh and he has seen, and liked that SNL skit with Steve Buscemi.

MF: When people walk out of the theater, what will they be thinking?

GO: It's great. It's a terrific conclusion to the trilogy. Nolan rounds it off: he brings in a bit of the first one, from 'Batman Begins,' and he does some really surprising things with it. I thought his choice of villain was very interesting, to use Bane instead of Riddler or Penguin. He's not gone with the most obvious choice. The challenge for Chris was always really the story and I think he didn't want to make a third one for the sake of it. I think there was pressure on him, obviously, because the second was so successful. So there's always going to be some pressure to keep it going. But he's too smart and classy, really to just make a third just for the sake of making it, because others are demanding or want it from him and I think he felt that, 'Let me get the story right.' So the fans won't be disappointed.

Are you sorry the series is over?

I'm not and I am. I think he probably is somewhere [in between]. I can't tell you what it is, but there was something on the set -- it was Batman-related -- and I said to Emma [Thomas, the producer], "You should keep that." And she said, "I don't know, we've got enough memorabilia." After eight years, he's sort of done with it. So I think there's a relief and it's mixed with [some sadness.] It was quite sad, my last night of shooting, to retire Jim.

Did you happen to catch the Batman sketch on 'Saturday Night Live' this weekend?

With Steve Buscemi?

Yes, what did you think?

I think it was hysterical! [Huge grin.] Very funny. He looked like Jim Gordon, didn't he?

I think we can all agree that Oldman made a fantastic Gordon and are looking forward to his final portrayal of the character in The Dark Knight Rises. For the full interview click the link below.

@Gusto; don't be doing that in any theatre with Pee Wee Herman in it.

@noomis you weren't satisfied with TDK? We're you stoned? Doped up? If you were let down by TDK then you won't like TDKR .

@llamaman23 if Nolan didn't use The Joker then I would agree 200% but The Ridler feels like a poor man's Joker and would be a lot less exciting to see after Heath's performance IMO. I wish the rumors of Robin Williams as Hugo Strange were true cause that would be awesome!

This movie will be just like X Men First Class, everyone shits on it before release and it turns out to be good. The problem is that this is Nolan and unless you hated TDK (which if so, then why even bother with TDKR?) then most people should give him the benefit of the doubt. He's a master at his craft (did you watch The Prestige??) and at least wait till there is a full theatrical trailer released to bash.

@Nomis If you consider yourself a Batman fanatic then you should appreciate proper portrayals of Harvey Dent and The Joker on the big screen. Not to mention the fact that Batman was a central piece to the film and had him doing detective work to track down The Joker.

When I walked out of TDKR I talked like the Joker for a few days.

Laughing gas would have been cheesy in Nolan's film which is why he probably replaced it with cutting smiles in faces and the Joker pretty much admits he's crazy in the interrogation scene. I feel like those aren't even major tweeks, sounds more nitpicky.

Nomis likes Smallville. All opinions on everything to do with faithfulness to comics to be taken with a pinch of WTF:)

@Nomis: Sorry bro, but you just lost your credibility comparing laughing gas to hallucination gas.
And again the interrogation scene being th latter, he pretty much admits to being crazy. If you're trying to convince people to side with you then you'll have to tell them you're not crazy.

definitely set the bar as Gordon. really want this movie to be out already.... Now that that's out of the way.....

its funny how the same people hate and bash the nolan films but yet are the first to comment on the article, even before the fanboys. how do you hate... but then stalk the articles... thats just sad

@Nomis - i do agree with your point that TDK lost the focus from Batman/Bruce and was the story of the rise and fall of harvey dent, but there is no taking away from the fact it is one amazing movie!!

I for one loved the new interpretation of the Joker, the anarchy vibe, chelsea smile concept/calling card were pure genius!!!

I agree the new suit was a little busy, but it worked in the movie, the only gripe i had was the bat logo!!

@Grif - Dude is there any comicbookmovies, scratch that, any movies that you actually enjoyed in your life?!!
Minghagz
Minghagz - 12/6/2011, 12:14 PM
@Nomis: Didn't know I pinched a nerve there? Take a breather and calm down. I'm merely pointing out the fact that you sound more nitpicky than anything. Were those points really that big of a deal? I don't mind your opinions but you make it sound as if it completely destroyed the movie with the justification of "major tweaks."
Minghagz
Minghagz - 12/6/2011, 1:04 PM
"pinch a nerve? uh?....okay. Sure, let's go with that."

Not to beat a dead horse, but comments like that tell me that you're a little upset (or since you want to go with the nerve pinched then we can do that).

Anyway, if you have a distaste for the movie then that's cool, I respect that. To each his own. But like I said, pointing out small things that really don't make a big difference is just nitpicky.

great actor & definetly the best casting in all of nolan's batman trilogy.

@Nomis: For the record, I wasn't trying to upset you or take it too seriously. Maybe I came off the wrong way. The resolution I was seeking to reach in this debate was the fact of having various interpretations in both media and in comics and you don't always get EXACTLY what you want. I for one, have always wanted a Joker portrayed the way Heath Ledger portrayed him.
