Nolan Not Keen on Crossovers with Batman

In his recent LA Times interview, director Christopher Nolan ruled out any superhero crossovers or cameos if he continues on with the Batman franchise...

"I don't think our Batman, our Gotham, lends itself to that kind of cross-fertilization. It goes back to one of the first things we wrangled with when we first started putting the story together: Is this a world in which comic books already exist? Is this a world in which superheroes already exist?

"If you think of Batman Begins and you think of the philosophy of this character trying to reinvent himself as a symbol, we took the position that superheroes simply don't exist. If they did, if Bruce knew of Superman or even of comic books, then that's a completely different decision that he's making when he puts on a costume in an attempt to become a symbol. It's a paradox and a conundrum, but what we did is go back to the very original concept and idea of the character. In his first appearances, he invents himself as a totally original creation."

"It's a different universe. It's a different way of looking at it. Now, it's been done successfully, very successfully, in the comics so I don't dispute it as an approach. It just isn't the approach we took. It would have given a very, very different meaning to what Bruce Wayne was leaving home to do and coming back home to do and putting on the costume for and all the rest. We dealt with on its own terms: What does Batman mean to Bruce Wayne, what is he trying to achieve? He has not been influenced by other superheroes.

"Of course, you see what we're able to do with Joker in this film is that he is able to be quite theatrical because we set up Batman as an example of intense theatricality in Gotham. It starts to grow outward from Batman. But the premise we began with is that Batman was creating a wholly original thing."

I think there could still be crossovers and still not sacrifice Nolan's original vision.

Batman could be one of the first superheroes. Perhaps Superman is the 2nd. And from there it just explodes with more and more superheroes (Flash, Green Lantern, etc) coming out of the woodwork.

i don't think that superheros could exsist in nolans world. I think that he's made that very clear with the movies.

The Nolanverse Batman is grounded in as much reality as possible. Too many superheroes would require too much suspension of disbelief.

Batman works alone. Period.

Batman is played out anyway. Dark Knight was a dissapointment. The only reason it made a fortune is because fanboys flock to any comic related crap hollywood throws at them. They left the Joker hanging from a cord, was there something after the credits that explained that or was it just a crappy loose end? The whole "lets turn the cell phones into sonar to pinpoint the Joker" was a plot device that made NO sense at all. Morgan Freeman had no problem giving Bruce Wayne a tank but turning the phones into sonar was out of line? What the hell was this movie about?

to Phycosis: we allow the military to have tanks and weapons and you no one complains, but if we found out they were listening to our telephone conversations, or watching us through hidden cameras we would be upset because its an invasion of privacy. thats why he didnt want to let him use the phones as sonar because he could use it to watch people's every move.
Im pretty sure they planned on using the joker more than once and thats why they just kinda left him there.

to get back on topic, i think they could add other heroes as long as they arent superpowered, like huntress, robin/nightwing, batgirl, green arrow, etc.

i think nolan is being quite arrogant about this, batman exists in the dc universe weather he likes it or not. i understand wanting to keep it as real as possible but to suggest hes the only costumed hero in this world is bullshit.

Can I go ahead and just say Nolan is a jerk and really pisses me off. I think he is an awesome director and did a fantastic job on the movies. But he is really pissing me off about all this. Get over yourself! I don't want a crossover either but he really sounds like a drama queen in all his other interviews about a possible follow-up.
