Paul Giamatti says "It would be Fantastic to be The Penguin"

I would like to see what Paul could come up with recreating a modern day Penguin role but based off of the O original.

MTV news is reporting in a recent interview with Paul Giamatti the actor states when asked about filling the shoes of TDKR Penguin casting rumor “That would be fantastic, I’d love to do that.” I think Paul would be an awesome fit. He is a talented actor coming thru with a few tough roles and is ready to line the silver screen with a star studded Hollywood blockbuster role.

Paul goes on to say “You know, I’m still stuck back in the ‘Batman’ TV show days,” confessed Giamatti. “That’s what I grew up watching, so I never followed the more current stuff. But The Penguin would be great to do.” I personally thought Bergus Meredith's crack at the Penguin was O original. Consistently whining "quack quack quack" even when upset was one of his trademarks. I would like to see what Paul could come up with recreating a modern day Penguin role but based off of the O original.

As much of an opinion as I have on the currant casting rumors be it Eddie Murphy as the Riddler (total BS), Johny Depp as the Riddler (that would be cool), Angelina Jolie and Rachel Weisz as Catwomen (umm I'm leaning towards Angelina on this one) or Phillip Seymore Hoffman as the Penguin, I cant help but reiterate that whatever Mr. Nolan deciedes to do will be just fine. Look at how he has mastered his last few films. I am confident he will remaster TDKR.

It wont be till later on in 09 or next year before we get any official casting news. Besides Phillip wasn't as enthused to play The Penguin as much as Paul is. Lets hope Paul's rumor gets a little more substance into it.

I just got done watching the underworld series all in one day. That was fun cuz my miss lady had never seen them and it was rainin hard so yeah, anyhoo .... Kate Beckinsale = CatWoman. Lets face it. we all already know exactly what Angie Jo would do with this part and honestly i am not that interested. Dont get me wrong i still want to lick peanut butter off her nethers but thats not the point here is it? No i think it is not.

I like angelina, rachel and kate is goddess-like, but I think it'd be hot to see a woman with a bit more of an exotic, cat-like look to her and not so A-list? As far as penguin goes. I think danny D's was a top knotch look. Not sure I'd want to see yet ANOTHER version of him. Riddler maybe. Poison Ivy would be hot, but I don't think I can see plants attacking the bats. Croc is a stretch, but would be pretty awesome.

I'm sick and tired of Angelina Jolie... she's the last person I want to play Catwoman... I'm definitely on the Rachel Weisz bandwagon.

ok first off, theres no news yet that its gunna be called "the dark knight returns", i think thatd be gay unless it was based off of frank millers book which obviously nolan wont do. so he wouldnt call it TDKR! but i think bane would be a cool villain, just make him realistic

No. No. No No. The ONLY choice for Catwoman is Jolie. It would have to be Jim Lee's version from Hush. Thats the only way Nolan would portray Catwoman in his movie. I dont care if any of you guys disagree. I'm right. Period. PLEASE, i'd love for someone to challenge this. Escpecially you Wolverine lovers who busted my balls all day on Monday. You're on my side of the fence now. That being the DC side I mean.

Dude, Mattlask, get over yourself, you're not "right" you're just opinionated. This is not the place to settle personal vendetta's against people who you think did you wrong, but only corrected a mistake you made...sure some of them went overboard, but that's no reason to get pissy.

and since this is an article about Penguin and not Catwoman, I'm actually going to comment on the article and leave my catwoman opinions to myself.

I think Paul Giamatti would be and excellent Penguin. He had totally owned practically every role he's been in. (not gonna lie, though, it was weird seeing him in Planet of the Apes and Thunderpants). He was an excellent eccentric villain in Big Fat Liar...sure it's more of a children's comedy, but just evolve that character a little further and you've got yourself a full-fledged comic book movie villain. He can also be a great dramatic actor, as seen in The Illusionist as the Police Detective (i forget his name right now). He's kind of like the middle man. He's bound by law to help solve the Dutchess' murder. The man that is suspected has recently become a good friend of his, while the royal dude (i forget his title, so that's what i'm calling him) does pay the detective off sometimes, though the detective only does his duty to the Royal Dude because if he doesn't, he'll lose his job and maybe his life. So he's torn in a moral and political delimma.

Stick those two roles together and you've got yourself one heck of a character.

First off Paul would be awesome he has this way of cummiting and the penguin is a REAL VENGEFUL PRICK paul can play that with his eyes closed and haha relax on the wolverine thing mattlask. U know as well as i do that if someone said "there was only one robin not three and that one wasnt killed by the joker" youd be all over them like white on rice. BUT youre right about the Jim Lee hush version shed be perfect for Nolans version of the dark knight. But i dont think hell choose jolie i personally dont want her to be in it to cliche. He'll probably pick someone who we wont even suspect and everyone will doubt it just like HEATH. i still think theyre somone out there we havent even thought of that will be perfect just not sure who.

Myself, I thought it would have been cool to have a cameo of him as the owner of the club where Batman finds Maroni in TDK.

I say:

Carla Gugino as Catwoman
Depp as Riddler

And anyone of these would be fine for penguin: Giamatti, Stanley Tucci, Philip Seymour Hoffman and if they go with a younger take on the character, Jason Schwartzman (good call crush).

As for this article, there is no official NEWS or STATEMENT that "proves" that Nolan is on board for the 3rd. Opinions aren't news!!!

I always liked Helena Bonham Carter for Catwoman, though it'd probably put her in an awkward situation, she beig Tim Burton's partner and all.

I said it from the beginning that Paul Giamatti should be the mad hatter or penguin he is [frick]ing awesome, and i just read on the comments that Joseph Gordon-Levitt should be joker awesome he would totally kill it he looks the part and he has crazy acting chops and he was also friends with heath ledger they were in 10 things i hate about you together so he wont sour the role like some one that doesnt know him but like everyone should know this is just name dropping hope they dont mess up this movie.

Paul Giamatti would be awesome as the Penguin. He is one of the most talented actors is hollywood. As far as Angelina Jolee as catwoman, if they cast her I would think twice about even watching the next Batman movie. She is one of worst actresses I have ever seen. I would actually like to see her jump off a bridge lol. I would rather see Eddie Murphy as the Riddler over Jolee as Catwoman.

I totally think Levitt could pull off the Joker, and that has nothing to do with how much he does or doesn't look like Heath Leger.

I think he is wrong for Cobra Commander (but that still remains to be seen), but he's totally got the skills to pull off a GREAT joker. Watch some of his indie's, he's got insane talent.

Paul would be an excellent penguin. He did a great job in the illuisionist.

All people who hate angelina jolie, I agree with u she is crap on top of shit dried out in the sun for to long bc billy bob thorton plowed threw her to many times. I saw go with someone who looks younger than bale but has the cress under her belt. I would rather see barbara Walters play catwoman b4 jolie tho.

In all seriousness pick someone other than jolie. If catherine zeta jones was younger I'd definitely go with her(unless she is willing to get her but into shape for some tight leather clothes.
Another possible pick I wannasay Megan fox but everyone wants her and I don't know how I feel about it. She is extremely hot but I want beauty with quality

Well im not a Penguin fan but Giammati would be great as him id say. I think Jolie would make a great Catwoman (anyone who thinks she cant act watch Clint Eastwoods Changeling and STFU!) ..but im with Shaman, Carla Gugino is the best i have heard for Miss Kyle

First of all Levitt'd be too young for Joker especially in the same storyline. Second, he might have done good indies but nothing that stands out that much. Or else he'd be all the rave as we speek which he isn't. Depending on what kind of performance he'll pull off as Cobra Commander, that's when we'll truly see IF he has the chops for Joker. If he doesn't sell that performance then he'd disgrace joker's character and i'm pretty sure that's the LAST thing we need right now.

And the point of having the joker in the third installment would be.................? Were going to have another actor play the joker because..........? Come on. Let it go. Its ok. I know, I know.....but let it go. The third movie will belong to other villians, not the joker, he had his time. I have no doubt that they will mention him, as to where he is at or what he is doing currently...(he is in a maximum security prison)..yada yada..conversation begins about him. Something like that. Hey...maybe they can do some half ass through a prsion door window shot just to say he was in the movie. Oh...wait....he wouldnt have his make-up on would he? I dont think they would let him continue to ware his make-up in prison? Then what would be the point. WE want to see him in his make-up right! So ....what he escapes.... right of course...stupid me. So now hes in the third movie....doing what....same stuff. Ask yourself this as a fan. Could you stand to see someone else trying to play the joker in a limited role even more so than Heaths in TDK. You have to make room for the new villian(s) remember? It cant be all joker again. So........do you really want to see that? If the answer is yes....why? He had his time....mention him move on. Think about it....where would he fit? You cant think of these big name movie stars to portray him either....there not going to stand for being in a scene once every 30 minutes or so and or one big 10 minute scene to somehow set up the rest of the movie. Think about it.......you dont want to see that. Just let it go.

Paul Giamatti......I dont know about that one. Hes a great actor dont get me wrong, but.... he looks like that uncle from back east that you see once every other christmas. He doesnt have that sinister, bad guy look to him if you will. I wouldnt be convinced. If you were batman...would you be intimidated by John Adams? I dont care how much make-up they put on him. I just...I dont know.

Joker is the flipside to Batmans coin..Batman is at his best in every way when facing him..I would feel a bit strange about someone replacing Ledger but i hope somebody does for the sake of the story..it doesnt matter which villain they have in the next one..NOBODY comes close to the Joker and the amazing stories they could adapt from the comics that feature him.

Shaman i have to disagree about Levitt, we wont see his chops in GI Joe because he along with the rest of the cast will be acting like they are in a Stephen Sommers blockbuster..in other words they will all fone it in! Its in the smaller indie movies that actors really deliver the goods..and though Levitt may not be a household name he recieved huge critical praise for 2 powerhouse performances in Mysterious Skin and Brick..im not saying he would make a good Joker because i agree he is too young, but if you want to see an actors true worth dont look to the blockbusters, its all about the ones nobody hears about!

I really liked how they brought the Scarecrow back w/ Cillian Murphy! I kinda want to see him again. I loved his portrayal(*spelling?) of the character, though its the only one to be seen on film lol but it was still great! Now bringing him back for another movie may be pushing it. O and when they were editing TDK did they say, "hey, what's missing to make fans of the 1st film go "hey! the scarecrow!"?" It was like his inclusion was last minute. his voice was totally the same w/ the mask off as it was w/ it on! lol still love that character (maybe cuz i like Cillian's acting)
I thought i was the only one who thought JGL should be the joker but i guess i was wrong. which sucks cuz i thought i was a genius lol But i really think he can pull it off! And giving him the role doesn't mean he has to be a main villian. Doing with him what they did with Scarecrow would work just as well. Sha already knows what i'm gonna say cuz he was the one who directed me here when i accidentally opened this for disscusion in another unrelated post :P whoops! anyway...
He doesn't even have to have lines! Either in the beginning w/ Com. Gordon at Arkham walking past the cells, passes a cell covered in pictures of Batman w/ the smeared smiles on them. Joker sits in his cell starring straight at the commish. Commish stops and stares back. Nothing... Joker smiles... Then Laughs (assuming he can pull that off) Gordon walks away (laughter continuing) then we hear doctors saying "Get him under control! It's time for your meds freak! Quin! Get in here!" (a lil nod!) :) ok i have to go to class

Shaman

Yes well i was comparing the "magnitude" of the roles. Cobra commander has or should have the same "magnitude" as the Joker's role. If he can't land that believebly, he ain't landing the Joker. Period. I do agree with you Roar on saying that if your looking for "true acting talent", you'll find more of it in indies. "Presence" is not felt as much in an indie as it is in a blocbuster simply because that isn't where the main focus is. But in a Blockbuster, presence is everything. It doesn't matter so much how you utter the words or how you display the feelings, it matters on how much you can breath in the essence of that character or the director's vision of that character which in turn makes you "embody" the character. Which is why you can't just give any role to just any talented actor. They must prove that they already have that presence or that they are able to in an audition. Levitt has done nothing to this date that would show us that he has the "presence" required for the role of the Joker. He will get the chance in Gi Joe. If he can't accurately "embody" Cobra Commander, then his sob performances he has done in his indies simply won't have enough pull to prove he's fit for Joker. Is he a talented actor? YES! Is he fit to be the Joker? Not yet. Same goes for Charlie Hunnam. He has the look at least but does he have anything that shows Joker material yet? I guess that's what auditions are for.

Yah......that scene would be completley......pointless. Im not saying there cant be some kind of a tie in from TDK concerning the joker to the next film. But to bring in another actor to portray him in an even smaller role is pointless. You cant minimize the role of the joker....it wont work. Hes to big of a character to share the screen with other big villians. IT wont work, the film will be to muddled. In TDK he only shared the screen wiht Two-face for the last half hour of the movie. Why do you think that is? He did share it with Havey Dent....an attorney. Not the crazy violent side of the character. There was no room for it...until the end of the movie. And if you remember...Two-face didnt even have a big scene until the joker was out of the film for good. Before that it was the two of them for a few minutes....then a couple 1 minute scenes with Two-face and other characters, then the joker was out danggling in the air....then his big scene. You see...you cant have a whole movie with two overly dominate characters sharing screen time and be successful. Oh....and dont for get that you have to fit the character of batman in there somewhere too. They have tried to do things like this before in the past and they never work. I hope they dont try to do it again. Leave the joker alone and in his cell.
Shaman
Shaman - 2/18/2009, 1:36 PM
Very good point agentend. The joker shouldn't be more than just hinted at in the next one unless he's the main villain which would be pointless. I mean, Lex is the best villain Superman has in the same vein as what the joker is to Batman but we're all sick of seeing him in very damn movie. Diversity is a must.

I would really like to see him become penguin again. That would be so awesome!... though instead of TDKR, I think it would be better to call the new one, The Caped Crusader. I mean, the dark knight is just one of his many names, and his main one is Batman. So it probably wouldn't make too much sence to go from batman, to the dark knight, to the dark knight a second time

well the problem w/ DINKlage (besides a well fitted name) is well the world that Nolan created is just... too big for him :) yes i know... i'm going to hell so you don't have to tell me.

The prob w/ naming it the Caped Crusader is, for one, lots of people haven't heard him called that before. The other is the name is too broad. idk it's weird. Superman wears a cape, and crusades. mainstream movie-goers won't know the diff (other than trailers w/ batman in them). What are some of the other names Batman goes by? I got into Batman in the 90s w/ the TV show so i can only think of TDK and the caped crusader.

it should be called HOT KNIGHTS IN GOTHAM CITY!!! BOOOOMMMM CRASSHHHHH!!!! BAYYYYY!!!! SPEED BOATS!!! PUSHED UP SLEEVES ON BLAZERS!!! SHOES WITHOUT SOCKSSSS!!!!

First off...Catwoman...Do they really need to throw her in the mix? Boring character with boring motives = boring movie. Secondly, Paul Giamatti as the Penguin...no...He's a good actor and was pretty sadistic in Shoot 'Em Up (assuming he'd act the same way with the same mannerisms in Batman), but he just doesn't fit the bill. Phillip Seymour Hoffman on the otherhand would nail the role. Johnny Depp as the Riddler would be amazing. They could also throw Bane in the mix, Mr. Freeze, Clayface, Poison Ivy, Mad Hatter, oh and Harley Quinn. How bad ass would that shit be? Find the right characters for the right roles and you got yourself a movie.
