I think Bale did better at both Batman and Bruce Wayne. When he was Bruce Wayne he actually seemed like an ass hole bachelor. Keaton never looked like a womenizing person he always looked too seriouse. Bale also did more stunts and fights that looked cooler than other Batmans.

Bale. But it depends on which writer of Bats you prefer. For me he was closest to Millers version of the character so he's my pick. But the gravel bat voice is quite grating..i preferred Keatons more whispered tones. But, like Anil said, Keaton pretty much played the same character in and out of the suit. His Wayne never so much as cracked a smile in either of Burton's movies. Kilmer and Clooney? The fact that i can't even remember their performances says it all. West was a legend with the comedic side of Bats.

Bale he's really a maniac just like Batman....LOL. Keaton's Bruce Wayne is no playboy it's like BELIEVING Bill Gates would be a ladies man without all his millions. KEATON'S BATMAN WAS GOOD just didnt dig his Wayne nor the comedy that was assicated with Keaton's Batman not Keaton himself, but his supporting cast. If you think about IT the Joker and Prince's Bat dance SOUND TRACK KILLED THE MOVIE. Clooney and Kilmer were AWFUL...SO I SAY HANDS DOWN Bale IS THE BEST TO WEAR THE COWL AND CAPE.

In all honesty, how often do you see Bruce Wayne portrayed as a playboy in the comics these days, never is the answer! I think if keaton would have had a better script and the technology would have been better back then, he would have been the better Batman. For that reason i think he is the better Batman when you bare everything in mind.

I still think Bale is a good Batman/Wayne, love the movies, just hoping we get one more from Nolan, come on chris gives us a triple threat.

Best Batman EVER? I'd say he's yet tot be filmed - here's my logic...

SO FAR the competition (in my eyes) is between Keaton and Bale (screw the performaces by Kilmer and Clooney - they were part of the Schumacher creations and therefore don't count. And as for West... HE'S NO BATMAN!!!). Keaton had the tone and mood down, but unfortunately he was working with Tim Burton. Let's face it people, Burton doesn't know how to do action/fight scenes.

Bale has the fighting down, but let's face it his protrayal of of Bruce Wayne is a WAY too emo. Also (and I don't know if this was intentional or not), but his 'Bat' voice is just plain annoying (someone PLEASE give the man a throat lozenge!). I could barely understand only every third word coming out of his mouth!

Now Bale won't/can't do Batman forever, so that means soemone else will step up to put on the cowl. Will they be better? Who knows, maybe. But movie Batman will never die (not if the WB know what's good for them!), so he'll keep coming back - which means eventually we'll get someone I truly think deserves to have the 'BEST Batman ever!' award.

Im a bigger fan of val kilmer.Even though when he got his shot at Bats the writing sucked and director sucked worse.

Val Kilmer had potential to be the best, unfortunetaly he was cast in batman forever. Clooney was an amazing bruce wayne IMO ( probably because he is the ultimate bachelor in real life )

I love Michael Keaton and Tim Burtons take on the character of Bruce wayne. They didn't bother with the playboy image, they portrayed him as a dark depressed individual. Those Tim Burton movies are amazing.

Bale is right out of the comic books. He can play the asshole bachelor and be the superhero. He gets in amazing shape for those movies, and hes an amazing actor. So he does take the crown for this, even though hes not my personal favourite batman.

Bale to me has no range. Kilmer and Clooney would have been so much better given the script and director. Every Bale movie ive seen he looks talks moves all the same.

Keaton is a great actor and did a great job with what he had to work with, but he doesnt really have the build to pull off a great batman

Anyone who even considers Clooney as a contender for this is an idiot, no offence. There was no difference between his performance as Bruce wayne and his peerformance as Batman, he didn't even lower his voice an octave. and dont turn around and say he did the best he could with the script, at that time he was established enough to make a change or difference to the script, he took the money, he is a douche.

@SuperKal - Boring and pretentious - 2 words that are associated with Clooney, and he looks nothing like Bruce Wayne, Clooney is a twat.

I liked Bale's voice as Batman. In the comics Batman is known for having a scary voice.
I want to see a real Dark Knight Returns with a retired batman played by Clint Eastwood. He has the voice down. Can't you see him yelling at kids outside the Batcave... "Get off my lawn". Perfect!

Val could have been awesome! The whole cast of Batman Forever was good if not spot on, unfortunately the director totally screwed the movie over! THATS what makes Schumaker so bad, not just the fact he made two bad films, he took a good script and great actors and still made crap! That's like running last in a relay race with your team in 1st, then you decide to stop before the finish for a kebab!

Clooney was just terrible! The guy can't act! He is the same wooden prick in everything. If you think he is even close to being good you need your head checked, preferably by a falling fridge!

Keaton was good but quite flat in his performance. The brooding was good but there was no line between Bruce and Batman and that's a huge part of the character gone. He was also too short for Bats. I don't often pick on the physical attributes of an actor but in this case I have to point that out. Batman is a towering demon in the shadows (in the eyes of criminals). Keaton gave us a rabid dog in the dark. The films were great but that's more a testament to Burton than anything else.

Bale takes the crown. His acting skill is superb, his physical conditioning is perfect and he plays a distinctly different Bruce and Bats. I actually think he could do an even better job with a different director. Nolan is fantastic and I want to see more from him but I don't think he is getting the best out of Bale, maybe that's his fault maybe it's not.

teabag - you may have a point on Keaton, it's been a loooooooong time since seeing them movies. I just commented on how I remember them. There have been many a night of alcohol intake over the years so those memories may be blurred!

As for Bales Bruce/Batman, they couldn't be anymore different. His Bruce is a self obsessed yuppie playboy with no thought for the feelings of others. His Batman is so selfless he is willing to take the blame for several murders he had no hand in just to give the city some hope. I don't see how they can be identical.
