Concept Art From Ben Affleck's THE BATMAN Shows What The Actor Could Have Looked Like In The Canceled Film

Before Matt Reeves, Ben Affleck was supposed to direct and star in The Batman. Not much is known about that version, but now we have a look at what Affleck could have looked like in the movie.

The Batman delivered a fan-favorite take on the Dark Knight and successfully kickstarted a new era for its titular hero. But before Matt Reeves took the helm of the film and Robert Pattinson became the Caped Crusader, The Batman was supposed to be set in the DCEU and directed by Ben Affleck, who would have also starred as his version of Bruce Wayne following his debut in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

Things appeared to be going well for the superhero adventure, as Affleck shared test footage of Deathstroke, who would eventually be revealed as The Batman's main villain, played by Joe Manganiello. As time went on, however, development on the film stalled. Firstly, Ben Affleck stepped down as director, eventually handing the reins over to Matt Reeves. Then, after much speculation, Affleck stepped down from the role altogether, which led to the version of the film that was ultimately released.

Many were left disappointed by not seeing the director/actor's take on the Dark Knight, especially after his portrayal was lauded as one of the most comic-book-faithful versions of the hero. Now, though, we have a look at what could have been. Concept artist Keith Christensen posted a piece of concept art from the scrapped version of the film, showing what Affleck could have looked like:

Christensen later shared another picture, showing the design from behind, and confirming in the caption that the concept was indeed for Affleck's version of The Batman: "And here's the back view. Tried to design a consistent, modular, functional suit made from ballistic materials. Suit was designed when [Ben Affleck] was directing and starring in [The Batman]:

The suit is a significant departure from the one the Dark Knight wore throughout his DCEU appearances. Christensen's version is much more armored, and seems to be partly inspired by the character's appearance in Injustice 2. Batman would end up wearing an armored costume in the form of the Tactical Suit in Justice League. That, however, was completely different from what we see here.

Keep in mind that the design may not be the one that Affleck and co. had settled on for The Batman. Films (especially superhero ones) usually go through a lot of alternate costume takes in the concept-art stage, and many of them vary wildly from the final product.

It's also worth noting that the design is somewhat similar to what looked like Affleck's costume in set pictures that came out from The Flash last year

Ben Affleck will return as the Caped Crusader for one final appearance in The Flash, which hits theaters on June 23, 2023.

Should've just made this the suit for Batman in Justice League if they wanted an armoured version. The little patches glued onto his normal suit or the one with the sunglasses just looked awkward

@bkmeijer - I liked his second suit but the moment he put the goggles on it just looked dumb. If they wanted some kind of eye protection I feel like they should have gone with in-cowl visors and given him the white eyes

@Ha1frican - if fans want Batman white eyes fans should have comment on black widow changing her to blonde she never was blonde and she always have Russian accent in books.,
Batman not having white eyes doesn’t make costume makes Batman in books but not everything in comics look good in live action that’s shown in comics.,

People on here have said how they prefer movie costume over comic accurate version from other marvel concept comics accurate art

@Forthas - Why are you and @Dope21 so hell bent on convincing the world that 'The Batman' is the worst thing to happen to superhero cinema since 'Batman & Robin'? Seriously just get over it. The movie is making a bunch of money, the word of mouth is excellent, and Matt Reeves has earned his trilogy. I know the both of you really don't have anything better to do, but damn.

@JesseCuster - I am not trying to convince the world that "The Batman" is "the worst thing"...I generally liked The Batman. However, Warner Brothers and their army of shills keep wanting to compare "The Batman" to Christopher Nolan's excellent Trilogy which is the only thing I take issue with. That film is no where near the same class of film as the Dark Knight films. It is filled with plot holes, mis-characterizations of Batman, and imagery lifted from the Dark Knight movies that these shills conveniently gloss over and are not pointing tout. These shills are the ones that keep trying to convince everyone that “The Batman” is far better than it actually is....the same thing they did with Affleck!

@Forthas - First off, don't compare this to Affleck. I respect Affleck, but Affleck's version, which was WIDELY mischaracterized compared to Pattinson's, was horrible and it's Snyder's brainwashed loser fanboys who started this whole revering of Affleck as the ultimate Batman. Pattinson has fans, but they're nowhere near the blood-thirsty idiots as the Affleck/Snyder cult. And why are people suddenly shills for liking this movie and thinking it to be a better Batman film than TDK? They have the right to that opinion and they share that opinion far more respectfully than Snyder cultists. Again, you may say that you aren't trying to convince the world, but me and everyone on this site knows that actions speak far more clearly about your feelings than your words.

@Forthas - The Batman is easily as good or even better than The Dark Knight Rises and Begins. Ben Affleck was excellent in his role in Batman v Superman. Probably the best part of the movie. Stop trying to constantly be edgy and nit picky lol. Everyone sees it. Constantly. And using the word “shills” all the time makes you look like a pretentious ass, trying to be cool.

@JesseCuster -

"And why are people suddenly shills for liking this movie..."

- Shills declared the film the greatest Batman film BEFORE THE FILM WAS RELEASED!
-Shills put out youtube videos or articles "comparing" "The Batman" to Christopher Nolan films in the most biased ways imaginable (for example stating it is the most "comic accurate" when the reality is there is no such thing since Batman has existed in innumerable iterations in comics).
man
- Shills attack others (like you have just done) when anyone disagrees that The Batman is the masterpiece that they keep trying to make it out to be.

"...but me and everyone on this site knows that actions speak far more clearly about your feelings than your words."

Everyone that reads my posts knows EXACTLY where I stand on Batman movie related issues because I tell you so and it has never changed. There is nothing secret about what I write. You seem to be defensive if anyone criticizes "The Batman" which I think is unfortunate. The film should be able to withstand criticism if it is as good as people such as yourself make it out to be.
Forthas
Forthas - 3/13/2022, 1:19 PM
@GirshwinDavies - It is not better than the Dark Knight Batman. That is not an opinion it is virtually a fact that can be proven.

If Affleck were 'excellent" then he would still be Batman. I would be the first to admit I am not edgy or cool but rather I am a big nerd!...but I tell the truth!
JesseCuster
JesseCuster - 3/13/2022, 1:20 PM
@Forthas - Clearly you don't know my views either. I don't think the movie is absolute perfection, in fact I think The Dark Knight is a better cinema movie (though I think The Batman is a better BATMAN movie with it's portrayal). There are several very understandable points to be made for a couple issues. That said, have I also made counterpoints? Yes, but it's all through respectful forms of dialogue and debate. Unlike you, you're just an asshole who thinks anyone likes the movie is a shill, so why show you respect? Everyone knows you're not a fan of the movie, so stop playing.
JesseCuster
JesseCuster - 3/13/2022, 1:21 PM
@Forthas - See? This is what I mean. Go [frick] yourself dude. He has a right to that opinion and you do that. That's why no one respects your silly ass.
Forthas
Forthas - 3/13/2022, 1:35 PM

@JesseCuster - Wait...you have labeled me as an "asshole" and that I should go "frick" myself. and "no respects my silly ass" but you are the respectful one!

Right!

"Everyone knows you're not a fan of the movie, so stop playing."

Just days ago I recommended that someone go see the film simply commenting that that I thought the film was good, but not great I am certainly not in love with the film, but there are good things about it. I am not going to fawn over a film that has as many flaws as that one does especially for a Batman film.

As far as respecting an opinion, I made the statement it is not an opinion (that Pattinson is a better Batman) and one I can prove. It is false that I or anyone else should respect ANY opinion. If you told me the world was flat...should I respect that?
JesseCuster
JesseCuster - 3/13/2022, 1:41 PM
@Forthas - Not sure if you missed elementary school, but there's such a thing as "respect is given where respect is earned". I don't give respect to pricks who compares someone's liking of a movie to a flat-earther. Again, you can pretend to say you liked the movie and that you wished no failure upon it, but everyone, I mean EVERYONE on this site knows you better than that. So please, go [frick] yourself.
