THE BATMAN Cinematographer Greig Fraser Reveals Why [SPOILER] Was Mostly Hidden In Shadow

The Batman cinematographer Greig Fraser has addressed the movie's big cameo, explaining the thought process behind cloaking a character who is all too familiar to comic book fans in shadow. Check it out!

The Batman ends with The Riddler behind bars in Arkham, but that doesn't mean he'll be staying there. Distraught that his plan failed, Edward Nashton is comforted by a creepy voice in the cell next door; this was clearly supposed to be The Joker, though director Matt Reeves has confirmed that this is a very early version of the villain captured by the Dark Knight during his first year in Gotham City.

It was hard to be sure what the Clown Prince of Crime looked like, though actor Barry Keoghan definitely had The Joker's trademark smile.

In an interview with The Wrap, The Batman cinematographer Greig Fraser weighed in to share his take on why the "Unseen Arkham Prisoner" was, well, so hard to see! "I can’t comment on who it is, but this Gotham is a bubbling cesspool of crime, isn’t it? So giving a little kiss or an introduction of who else may be living in this prison. I mean, what a fantastic opportunity to do that."

And again, going back to the adage of you don’t want to see too much. You never want to see too much. Sometimes seeing too much can distract from some of the beauty or joy of watching films."

Reeves recently revealed that he shot another scene with The Joker set much earlier in the movie which would have seen the World's Greatest Detective turn to the serial killer for help in getting inside The Riddler's mind, but the Harlequin of Hate would (presumably) have been concealed there, too.

Later in the same interview, Fraser was asked if he'd return for a sequel. "I loved it. I loved the process. I love Matt as a director. So I mean, you can take whatever you want from that. I mean, there’s more stories to be told in this place. There’s more things to do. There’s more opportunities there. This is why it’s such a fantastic world to be in, because it’s a great opportunity to explore this world."

These comments certainly bode well for the future, and given what a beautifully shot movie the DC adaptation was, we'd be shocked if this reunion for The Batman 2 isn't already set in stone. Assuming it does happen, fingers crossed the cinematographer is able to bring The Joker out into the light...

@GirshwinDavies - He wasn't the Joker but someone as a kid that got infected with a Joker's serum by The Joker himself and developed a psychosis where he took on The Joker's attributes when he got older. Never was he the actual Joker though and was never considered to be except for those on this site trying to make a sniping comment about the C-level show.

It brought a lot of speculation at first, where some people I discussed the movie with assumed that they saw Harvey Dent/Two Face in that Cell.

I honestly didn’t grasp how they shot to Harvey Dent just because he had a disfigured face when the “CLOWN” reference and laugh at the end of the scene were dead giveaways. But HEY!
Everyone’s minds work differently.

@SatsuiNoJXA - I myself initially thought it was two-face with a strong possibility of it being the joker if I was wrong.

@Dope21 - garbage? Are we comparing it to other movies or looking at it itself? I wouldn't say garbage. Covid, delays and batdrama since bvs it was bond to be overhyped regardless.

@Dope21 - It’s definitely not garbage.. but I was underwhelmed, a little disappointed actually. But there’s no denying that there’s a lot in the film that is brilliant, the neo noir tone was perfect the detective investigations with Jim Gordon, the portrayal of Riddler as a Zodiac killer type murderer, The Penguin, Batmobile entrance and chase, and the great opening of criminals scared when the Bat Symbol lights up in the sky.. but overall it was just not what I expected. Didn’t hate it but definitely didn’t love it.

@JohnCastillo - To elaborate on what you said I felt that overall this is the perfect “Batman” film, but not the perfect “film” pertaining to Batman. Matt Reeves has a beautiful eye for detail and his vision is absolutely masterful, but he’s not a seasoned writer like Nolan. The Dark Knight was far from perfect, but the dialogue was memorable and their was weight behind each character interaction. The Batman (looking past the beautiful cinematography, art direction, and gritty detective narrative) never quite earned those kinds of moments.

I thought it was cool. I think it would have been more accepted as a post credit scene. But it is what it is at this point. Hope they save Joker for a few movies down the line and just keep teasing him. I have no doubt Reeves will make him a living nightmare

Chuck420Taylor - 3/10/2022, 5:25 PM
@OldMan - yea I saw it twice and it definitely feels more like post credit or LAST scene stuff. We get Batman and Catwoman doing bike stuff after that. The laugh should have been the last thing I heard imho.

I hope sincerely that he does come back to do the sequel. Despite it not being better than The Dark Knight, I confidently say that this is the best visuals in a Batman movie ever. Seriously, this cinematography is practically on par with 'Joker' for me and I would be stunned if Fraiser didn't get nominated for this film.
