THE BATMAN Composer Michael Giacchino Teases His Work On The Film And More Planned Reveals

The Batman composer Michael Giacchino has spilled the beans on his work on the upcoming DC Comics pic, and teased plans for more snippets of his score to be heard in future reveals and teasers!

Batman has had a lot of memorable themes over the years, whether it's Neil Hefi's camp TV soundtrack, Danny Elfman's brooding score, or Hans Zimmer's powerful soundtrack. Now, it's down to Michael Giacchino to create something new for The Batman, and Collider has managed to get some details from the composer.

Based on what Giacchino told the site, he's enjoying being given the freedom to put his own unique spin on the Dark Knight by director Matt Reeves.

"I felt total freedom to do whatever I want," he admits. "Matt always agreed, this is our Batman, this is our vision. In the same way that I always loved, what I still do about Batman comics and graphic novels is that each of these artist, each of these authors they take their own crack at what they want this to be. It’s their version of Batman."

Giacchino isn't feeling the need to live up to or imitate what's come before. "I’m not the kind of person that says Batman must always be this. It’s like no, why? It can be whatever the artist wants to be and it has over the years done that, many times over. I love the idea of taking something and just kind of doing our version of it."

The composer went on to reveal that he wrote the theme we heard in the teaser some time ago, and that a lot of his work is going to be heard in upcoming promotional material for The Batman.

"I did go over and record that for that. We recorded a bunch of other music as well for it, a bunch of themes and things that nobody has heard yet. But they’ll all be popping up as the film gets underway again and starts getting back to production, and life gets back to normal, hopefully soon."

Similar costume reveals for characters like Catwoman, The Riddler, and The Penguin would be really something quite special to see. Unfortunately, we might be forced to wait for a while because production on The Batman has been halted thanks to COVID-19, and we don't know when it will start up again given the uncertainty surrounding the film industry at this time.

I still can't get over how much talent is involved in making this. Thanks Matt Reeves!

@WakandanQueen - The cast is so [frick]ing cool. Pattinson as Batman? Dano as Riddler? It's like A24's Batman

@tmp3 - Also Jeffrey Wright as Gordon just feels so right.
Kravitz is very underrated.

He's a hit or miss composer, but I hope he does great work here. The screen-test theme sounded a bit too reminiscent to the Imperial March for me, but I like that he's saying he's unified with Reeves on a singular vision for this film.

@tmp3 - Hit or miss? The man did 'Enterprising Young Men'.

@KnifeWasTooSlow - He has some bangers, but a lot of his stuff just feels too safe for me. His scores for Rogue One, Jurassic World and Dawn of the Apes never stuck out to me; but his Pixar stuff was all great, and his main Trek theme was solid. Also didn't really find his Spider-Man music to be all that memorable, which is an issue for Batman since both the Elfman and Zimmer scores had a distinct sound to them.

Giacchino has always felt like a “safe” composer for projects. I really do hope he takes us back to the gothic styled themes. Something like The Dark Knight Returns theme would be perfect.

This score could either be wildly inventive or super safe. The teaser music was cool though.

I love the idea of taking something and just kind of doing our version of it.

His best work was War of the planet of the apes, rogue one, incredibles and Ratatouille. Hopefully he channels some of that.

If he can create a key theme for the character as definitive and rousing as Danny Elfman's I will be a happy man. I'll stand and salute in the theater, whilst maintaining an appropriate social distance.

I agree with what he said, i don't think anyone is actually expecting Elfman/Zimmer 2.0.
They both did their own thing and they both knocked it out of the park.

Hopefully Giacchino will do the same for HIS Batman.

I don't know about this. To some extent it is true. Yes, Elseworlds versions of a character exist and it's often very interesting. But changing elements that are fundamental to a character can often polarise fans and make the character unrecognisable.

We've seen a murderous Batman before. And it was controversial to say the least.
