THE BATMAN II: Jeffrey Wright Still Hasn't Seen A Screenplay; Teases Jim Gordon's Evolution In Sequel

As far as we're aware, filmmaker Matt Reeves remains hard at work on The Batman sequel but Jim Gordon actor Jeffrey Wright has now revealed that he's still waiting to see a screenplay for the movie...

There are concerns among fans that The Batman II could fall by the wayside. It seems like a silly concern on the surface, but with James Gunn now getting involved, some believe "creative differences" might be on the horizon.

The DC Studios co-CEO has been debunking rumours and confirmed he'll be giving filmmaker Matt Reeves notes when his screenplay for the sequel is finished. The filmmaker and executive also majorly confused fans by revealing that the long-delayed Arkham-set TV series will be set in the DCU rather than Reeves' Batverse.

We'll see what happens, but work on The Batman follow-up has definitely slowed down since last year's Hollywood strikes.

Talking to ET Online, Jim Gordon actor Jeffrey Wright shared what he knows about the movie. "You've seen as much of a script as I have at this point," he admitted. "I don't want to jump ahead. I just want to go forward with it."

"Clearly, I'm Lieutenant Gordon at the end of the film, the first film, so we may be moving up in the ranks, I suppose, but I haven't seen anything yet," Wright continued. "I'm being patient, letting [director] Matt Reeves do his thing - which is going to be magical and wonderful - and looking forward to diving back into it when the time comes."

DC Studios has its own Batman plans as the Caped Crusader will take centre stage in The Brave and the Bold. The Flash helmer Andy Muschietti is attached to direct that project which is expected to revolve around Bruce Wayne training his son, Damian, as Robin in the new DCU.

Robert Pattinson will reprise his role as the Dark Knight in The Batman II but little else has been revealed. There have been conflicting reports about the movie's villains, with everyone from The Joker to Clayface said to be among the possibilities.

In 2022, we talked to Wright about his role as Jim Gordon and asked what it was like bringing the character to life on screen.

"Well, I think the word grounded really is what we were going for. It’s what attracted me to Matt’s vision upon reading the script. What’s remarkable about our film is that, and it’s very gratifying to have been a part of, is that the script is really fully realised on the screen. Matt had very a specific vision and tone he wanted to realise, and we did it. It really was that; it was grounded and authentic. It was tangible."

"So, for Gordon, still a Lieutenant as we’re in Year Two of Batman’s story, he is literally boots on the ground in that he’s still a cop in the street and that partnership with Batman, who we celebrate as the World’s Greatest Detective going back to the origin of his character in the comics, really flourishes under this construct that Matt’s created. It was really activating for me and I think we see Gordon and Batman and their partnership in a way we perhaps haven’t in previous versions of the story."

The Batman II is currently scheduled to be released in theaters on October 3, 2025.

Translation: Matt Reeves will be leaving The Batman after the second film if it does not do well.

Here is hoping that Warner Brothers Discovery is bought by a more competent company before James Gunn can damage the Batman brand beyond repair.

@Forthas - yeah nah, I actually have trust in Gunn. Brave & The Bold is so different from The Batman, that I think both can be afforded to exist at the same time. Even if Gunn does [frick] up, there will always be the other version.

A movie not making enough money is seperate from that. It's a business decision not follow up on Part 2 if it doesn't do well, not a creative one.

@Forthas -

The fact that Gunn forced Reeves to change his Gotham show and put it into gunns Dcu is a very telling sign😐....

I was disappointed by Gordon in the first one, so more development is welcome news.

I liked him as Gordon so I’m interested to see how his version evolves in the sequel & beyond…

He very much felt like the Watson to Batman’s Holmes in the first one so I hope that does continue to an extent aswell!!.

Also , i rewatched the movie recently and still like it a lot…

I know the real dark , heavy & grounded tone isn’t for everyone but it worked for me!!.

@TheVisionary25 - yeah, I liked his Gordon and his dynamic with Batman too. Getting to see more of that dynamic would be fun. Just hope that doesn't make the movie longer, as the first one was way too long as well imo

@bkmeijer1 - that’s fair

The pacing was certainly deliberately slow but the movie kept me engrossed pretty much so I didn’t really mind it.

@TheVisionary25 - I didn't really mind the pacing, but the whole last section with the bombs, Riddler's reddit club and the arena just felt unnecessary.

@bkmeijer1 - fair enough

It certainly felt bigger then the rest of the film but I still liked it , especially the moment in which Bruce helps the trapped civilians.

@TheVisionary25 - that was a cool moment, especially visually with the torch. But outside of that, it felt like it was only added to give the movie some spectacle

@TheJester187 - you should be grateful that you weren't around during the dark times roughly a decade ago.
It was war between us Nolanites and the beginning of the Marvelites.
Obviously we won.

@TheJester187 - there has been one improvement though: no more thirst trap articles. I kinda miss them, but that might because I prefer them over the rumour articles

If the rumor is true about Robin being in this movie, then yeah I can see creative differences will emerge.
