There are concerns among fans that The Batman II could fall by the wayside. It seems like a silly concern on the surface, but with James Gunn now getting involved, some believe "creative differences" might be on the horizon.
The DC Studios co-CEO has been debunking rumours and confirmed he'll be giving filmmaker Matt Reeves notes when his screenplay for the sequel is finished. The filmmaker and executive also majorly confused fans by revealing that the long-delayed Arkham-set TV series will be set in the DCU rather than Reeves' Batverse.
We'll see what happens, but work on The Batman follow-up has definitely slowed down since last year's Hollywood strikes.
Talking to ET Online, Jim Gordon actor Jeffrey Wright shared what he knows about the movie. "You've seen as much of a script as I have at this point," he admitted. "I don't want to jump ahead. I just want to go forward with it."
"Clearly, I'm Lieutenant Gordon at the end of the film, the first film, so we may be moving up in the ranks, I suppose, but I haven't seen anything yet," Wright continued. "I'm being patient, letting [director] Matt Reeves do his thing - which is going to be magical and wonderful - and looking forward to diving back into it when the time comes."
DC Studios has its own Batman plans as the Caped Crusader will take centre stage in The Brave and the Bold. The Flash helmer Andy Muschietti is attached to direct that project which is expected to revolve around Bruce Wayne training his son, Damian, as Robin in the new DCU.
Robert Pattinson will reprise his role as the Dark Knight in The Batman II but little else has been revealed. There have been conflicting reports about the movie's villains, with everyone from The Joker to Clayface said to be among the possibilities.
In 2022, we talked to Wright about his role as Jim Gordon and asked what it was like bringing the character to life on screen.
"Well, I think the word grounded really is what we were going for. It’s what attracted me to Matt’s vision upon reading the script. What’s remarkable about our film is that, and it’s very gratifying to have been a part of, is that the script is really fully realised on the screen. Matt had very a specific vision and tone he wanted to realise, and we did it. It really was that; it was grounded and authentic. It was tangible."
"So, for Gordon, still a Lieutenant as we’re in Year Two of Batman’s story, he is literally boots on the ground in that he’s still a cop in the street and that partnership with Batman, who we celebrate as the World’s Greatest Detective going back to the origin of his character in the comics, really flourishes under this construct that Matt’s created. It was really activating for me and I think we see Gordon and Batman and their partnership in a way we perhaps haven’t in previous versions of the story."
The Batman II is currently scheduled to be released in theaters on October 3, 2025.
