Christopher Nolan Still Not Sure About About Batman 3D!

The director of the upcoming Batman 3 talks about how he feels about 3D and whether he'd ever be tempted to use it in his next movie...

"I’m taking a bit of a wait-and-see attitude towards 3D," Nolan told the British newspaper The Daily Telegraph about his upcoming movie, Inception which is set to be released later this month. "It’s come and gone many times over the years."

"I don’t particularly enjoy watching films in 3D because I think that a well-shot and well-projected film has a very three-dimensional quality to it, so I’m somewhat sceptical of the technology."

"Until we get rid of the glasses, or until we really massively improve the process, I’m a little wary of it."

However, despite the fact he's not a huge fan of 3D, Nolan has revealed that Warner Bros are researching new ways to film the next Batman movie and that if the audience want 3D they might just get it, "But we’ll be looking at it, and if that’s what audiences are demanding from blockbusters – and we’re making blockbusters – then it’s something we’ll address."

I thought we already knew he didn't like 3D (which I agree! unless it's something similar to Avatar and Green Lantern style not like Clash of The Titans going 3D)

anyways nice find :D

never mind Avatar sucked in 3D :)

I wouldnt want to watch Batman 3 in 3D. I dont think it would work as a whole. The experience wouldnt simply be the same. Not that Batman is one dimensional or something but he just doesnt have that "epicness", if you understand. Dont get me wrong, I [frick]ING LOVE BATS - He is an epic character and all that but visually he wouldnt work in 3D. He is too real, if you get me. However Green Lantern I could see in 3D with all the constructs, space, intergalactic villians etc and of the chart action. The scale of Green Lantern is laaarger than Bats by that. And the Nolan Batman is grounded in realiy here on earth. I would probably be cool for a little while but then you would just: "Why the hell did I want to watch this in 3D?"
Superman even could work better than Batman in 3D, but I wouldnt watch The Man of Tomorrow either in 3D. Hal Jordan got most to show for on 3D. I would however watch Batman 3-3D on my Nintendo 3DS when it comes but I wont watch it in 3D's on the big screen.

Beware my power!

NO! 3D would ruin what has been already captured with the first two movies. If you start messing with the formula that made the first two movies a success, then you jeapordize the 3rd movie. Though it is a comic book movie, it is somewhat based in reality, and the 3D would pull you out of it.

I'd hate to see 3D forced on Nolan's next Batman movie - if there's one franchise where it would be completely out of place and would ruin the atmosphere, it'd be this one. Just let him film the whole thing in IMAX instead - the few scenes where he did that in The Dark Knight looked stunning on blu-ray! :)

If he is going to pursue it, then do it right. Ask Cameron for his Fusion-3D System, and not do what these other neanderthals have been doing by converting, instead of shooting it from the beginning!

Kane - Calm down lassie, They always release an original reel, along with the 3D reel. So people have better options. ;P

i don't really think the audience is clamoring for a 3D batman movie. just lay off, WB and try it with Green Lantern and Superman. let nolan do it how he wants and force it upon the next director. Batman will not benefit (nor be hurt by) 3D - therefore why risk it..

oh yeah i forgot you can charge an extra $5-$10 for 3D - get ready for batman c'min right atcha!

I agree with InstigatorGIRL, 3D is bull shit and best left to the kid's movies and amusement rides. Even Avatar was annoying, probably the best 3D movie to date but that doesn't change the fact that it still hurts my f^cking head to watch this for two hours. Keep it 2D, Nolan just got more kudos for his statements.

I hate live action movies in 3D! Especially when it's something as engaging as a Nolan film. When I watch a movie I want to see everything in the scene, from the main focal point down to the smallest background detail. That's how these movies are meant to be viewed! When you throw 3D in there all you have is the focal point of the scene thrust into your face like one of teabags boob pics (only not as exciting). You end up missing the little things that make the movie complete. Leave 3D to Shrek and other children's animation where these details aren't as important.

Based on this, I doubt Nolan's going to do it in 3D. And he shouldn't. I don't mind 3D, it was cool in Avatar even though it gave me a headache, but it would be totally misplaced in a Batman movie.
AngelAragiel
AngelAragiel - 7/2/2010, 11:40 AM
I think 3D is a gimmick that Batman does not need. If you have a compeling, well written story, good actors, a good photography, etc. you don't need the 3D.
JoshWilding
JoshWilding - 7/2/2010, 11:50 AM
The only Batman I want to see in 3D is Batman XXX 2! :D

I like his point about 3D without the glasses though. They definitely need to improve the technology in some way because as someone who wears regular glasses it's a real pain in the arse, and pretty damned uncomfortable, to have to wear 2 pairs while watching a movie!

;)

@Josh That's my biggest complaint with 3D too is it's hard for me to watch anything when I have to try to fight with the damn 3D glasses to stay over my regular glasses. Also, I just think it's overrated. To me it doesn't really add anything to the movie.

In my opinion, 3D is good for movies such as Spy Kids and not good for movies that have heavy plots. I think Batman 3 is fine without 3D.

Inception has barely any CGI and such. It looks to be one of the most visually stunning movies I'll ever see. We don't need 3D or CGI for Batman in any matter unless it's important or you're doing Killer Croc. Including the certain scenes in the climax of Batman Begins. Really looking forward to Batman 3 news after Inception.

IGIRL/AngelAragiel: Tell me about it! Between my glasses being reflected in the 3D glasses' lenses and the fact that my nose starts throbbing with pain every few minutes with the weight of them both, it becomes more of an ordeal than anything to watch a movie!

I've never been a huge fan of 3D and Avatar is probably the only movie I've seen where it's made an actual difference to the movie rather than a few cheap gags. I'm interested to see how Green Lantern takes advantage of it, but other than the odd movie I could happily live without it! However, if they lost the glasses I guess I'd feel a little more positive about 3D!

TABOO: Lol, that was aimed at the brains behind 3D rather than you ladies - I'm no sexist! :D
