Marion Cotillard On Her Role In The Dark Knight Rises

Marion Cotillard On Her Role In The Dark Knight Rises

She doesn't confirm or deny that Miranda Tate is really Talia Al Ghul, but gives us an idea on what drew her to the project and the Batman character..

Just like Joseph Gordon Levitt would say nothing about his part in TDKR in recent interviews, Marion Cotillard seems to be getting coached by the ever secretive Christopher Nolan too.

In the press release that confirmed the actresses' involvement in the movie, her character was listed as Miranda Tate, " a member of the Wayne Enterprises board "eager to help a still-grieving Bruce Wayne resume his father's philanthropic endeavors for Gotham.". But fan speculation, and the news that Rhas Al Ghul will be involved in the story led many to believe that this was a cover for her true role, Talia Al Ghul.

24 Frames put the question to her, but as expected, didn't get too much in response..

"My role is a secret, as is the whole project."

But that does suggest that this "secret" role is not just what the press release reveals. She also speaks a little on rejoining Nolan on this project, and what drew her to Batman..

Cotillard did offer some thoughts on why she joined the film -- namely, a chance to reunite with Nolan. And she said she has a specific regard for Batman among pretty much all the superheroes out there.

Just what is it about Batman that makes him so appealing to the actress? It's that brooding thing. "I think it's that he's human," Cotillard said. "He can't really fly, and he doesn't have superpowers. And he has that darkness inside."

She's obviously Talia. She won't even comment on her character. What can be so secretive about a new Wayne Enterprises board member? Same goes for JGL.

It sucks because when that big "reveal" that she is talia does happen, it's not going to be a surprise to anyone; we all saw it coming, right? Therefore, this leads me to believe that maybe she isn't going to be Talia, because that would be too obvious. A reveal like that would be one of the most important parts of the movie. There is no way Nolan is going to be that predictable...right?

Catwoman also was too obvious to be in TDKR after that comment of Lucius Fox in TDK and she is in the movie.
More obvious than Catwoman´s presence in TDKR,it´s impossible.

My excitment for this movie is at an all time low. I mean Begins was such a good movie and the Dark Knigh was way over hyped but what really makes me mad is thatif Nolan does use this Miranda Tate character as an alias to Talia it would be so lame. The man prides himself of the next big twist, something no one sees until the very end and he does this? Something that fanboys picked up one just from a press release? How unimaginative and uncreative! If M. Night mad his twists this notacable people would hate him, which they do. All I'm saying is that this man has made two good movies loosely based on the batman character and his big twist can be seen a mile away. I think, if this is right, this man has lost his magic.

Ryguy88 - 5/3/2011, 10:02 PM
What "twists" are you talking about?? There were no real twists in the first 2 Batman movies and even if Cotillard winds up playing Talia the info was probably only concealed to preserve the story, not for some cheap M. Night Shyamalan twist.

Intruder, haha, Smoke more often then.

I think he means how in the first movie it was really Ducard as Ra's, and in the second movie, while everyone thought it was all about the Joker it was really about Harvey Dent...............but to be honest even in those pretty well anyone who knew anything about the characters and what the storyline was based on knew the outcome right away.

The only thing that we can pretty well tell about this movie is that Cotillard is actually Talia.............thats it lol

Because they want a potentially catastrophic JL film?

RyKnow

Where does she even remotely imply she's Talia??? She said her role is a secret, that doesn't mean she's Talia. Anthony Michael Hall's role in The Dark Knight was a secret, and he just ended up as a news reporter. Is it so hard to believe that she is simply playing a character called Miranda Tate who works for Bruce Wayne and nothing more.
Besides, I find it hard to believe that someone with the imagination of Nolan would simply re-use an idea he's already used in Batman Begins. What's next, she's gonna steal a train and head to Wayne Tower with a microwave emitter???

RyKnow@ Im not saying she said so but i would guess so cause so far few things has implied that she would be in it. Josh Peck playing young Ras. Bane as the villain (Who has been connected to Talia, Ras and League of Shadows in comics few times).
I find it hard to believe that Nolan would end his trilogy without bringing it to full circle and Talia is perfect way to that... but thats just my humble opinion.
They could just make Bane and Catwoman the villains and Marion the love interest and end it with that but somehow i think thats just too easy.

She SHOULD be selena Kyle
RyKnow
RyKnow - 5/5/2011, 6:01 AM
@ AlexDeLarge87 - I wasn't singling you out particularly mate, it was more a general observation. I'm convinced Talia's not in it for three reasons;

1. When casting, Nolan wanted two female leads; a villain, and a love interest for Bruce Wayne. Catwoman (villain), Miranda Tate (Bruce Wayne's love interest). Although I'll admit it may be possible to have Selina Kyle as the love interest, and the Talia theory could be true, but I find it unlikely (keep reading).

2. I've been a fan of Chris Nolan's work since I first saw Memento and what I've picked up on is no two films of his use the same idea. They already gave the villain in Batman Begins a secret identity, I can't see Nolan putting the same idea in TDKR. Also, Nolan will be well aware that fanboys are expecting this Miranda Tate character to secretly be Talia Al Ghul, which is why he'll more than likely not do that. He aims to surprise.

3. I watched Batman Begins last week, and people on this site have said that Ra's says "I wasn't always here. I had a family, they were taken from me" implying that he has a daughter. Well, I paid careful attention to that scene, and Ra's actually says "I wasn't always here. I had a wife, my love. But she was taken from me"; no family, no daughter, just a wife.

I'm not saying your wrong for having a different theory, and I'm not saying I'm right. My opinion is Talia won't be in the film.
Don't we just love the secrecy of Nolan :D

As a side note, I was reading about Talia in my DC Encyclopedia, and she basically came across as an ally of Batman, and not an enemy. If that's in the source material, would Nolan really write her into the film as an out-and-out villain?

Maybe Nolan just wants to deceive Bruce Wayne, not us.
And if the formula worked in Begins, can work perfectly again.
It´s not because that was done before,he won´t do.
And you´re forgetting the general audiences.
They don´t know Talia...they don´t have a [frick]ing idea of who she is.
It won´t be a surprise for us,but for the most.
And Miranda/Talia can be Bruce´s love interest who turns out to be the villain and Selina/Catwoman can be the villain who turns out to be the love interest and ally.
The roles can be inversed.
Catwoman and Talia are villains and also love interests.
Sometimes they are against Batman and sometimes are his allies.
And Miranda IS Talia...there´s no other way.

@ balegirlbrazil - I've read posts by you several times in the past and you have nothing to say other than "Cotillard IS Talia" or "Miranda IS Talia". You give no reasons why you have that opinion and refuse to listen to anything to the contrary. Don't get me wrong, your entitled to your opinion, it's just nice to bounce ideas back and forth and listen to someone elses reasons, but there's none of that from you. The word narrow-minded springs to mind.

Well...just don´t see that Miranda is Talia,who doesn´t want.
And this is definately your case...you don´t want to see it and is creating obstacles against her that doesn´t exist.
Everything points to her being in this movie,darling...you wanting or not.
Each day brings more evidence of her presence in TDKR....there´s no denying.
But you want to prove for A + B that Talia is not in the movie, because YOU DON´T WANT to see her!
Confess...
If you don´t believe Miranda is Talia,it´s your problem.

RyKnow
RyKnow - 5/6/2011, 1:31 AM
@ balegirlbrazil - I'm not creating any obstacles, I'm just stating why I think it's unlikely Talia will be in the film. If she is then she is, it'll still be a good film and Cotillard will do a great job. But as I've said, because people are expecting Miranda Tate to really be Talia, add the fact it's the same idea that was used in Batman Begins, I can't see Nolan doing it. And you'd previously said if the formula worked in Batman Begins it'll work again. You really can't see that that's not the kind of director Nolan is; he doesn't want to recycle old ideas, he wants to present new things that will shock and surprise. Putting Talia in TDKR will do neither of those.
Where's the evidence you claim appears daily saying that Talia is in the film? What things point to her been in the movie? Answer these questions with something else other than "Miranda IS Talia".

P.S. Just because there will be a flashback sequence with a young Ra's doesn't necassarily mean Talia will be in it. He never mentions he had a family in Batman Begins, only that he had a wife who was taken from him. If he had a daughter, he'd more than likely have mentioned it.

Do you think that RyKnow put me in my place, just calling for the same stupid vague argument that Nolan won´t do that again, because it was done before??
Really?
hahahaha
It´s the same stupid argument...it´s the ONLY ONE argument RyKnow has to say that Talia is not in the movie.
Don´t make me laugh,please,c´mon!
This is not an enough reason for not including a character.
It´s very very vague.
He is fighting the inevitable.
RyKnow simply ignored my post saying Nolan was looking for a 10 year-old girl to act opposite Josh Pence(the young Ra´s Al Ghul) in India, who simply cannot be another one but Talia.
And I won´t say which are the evidences that Talia is in the movie, because I´m awfully lazy to write.
I already did that a million times around and I´m not in order to do it again and again and again...
And if RyKnow was really smart,he would know which are.
@RyKnow,when you post something really convincing to prove that she is not in the movie, then I will stop talking about her.
I promise.
