New Fan Theory About 'The Joker' In THE DARK KNIGHT Will Blow Your Mind

Recently, we've been hearing a lot of speculation about Jared Leto's Joker in Suicide Squad, but one fan has now come up with a very interesting take on Heath Ledger's Oscar winning portrayal in The Dark Knight. Was The Clown Prince of Crime really that movie's hero?

Jared Leto is going to have to do a lot to top Heath Ledger's take on The Joker, and you have to believe that the Dallas Buyers Club star will face plenty of comparisons to what we saw in The Dark Knight back in 2008 when Suicide Squad is released next year. His take is no doubt going to be very different, but now a new theory has surfaced which may just change how you view The Joker from Christopher Nolan's movie. Here's the theory from Reddit user GeneralZee (via Uproxx).

Joker, although a lying psychopath, is actually the hero in The Dark Knight. Before the Joker, Gotham was a mess. Entire sections of the city were closed off due to madness, organized crime ran rampant, and the majority of important city officials were wildly corrupt. The city even tolerated a renegade vigilante who ran around wearing a rubber suit (Okay, special armor and carbon fiber, but they don’t know that). Along comes the Joker and by the end of a very short time, almost all organized crime was eliminated, many corrupt officials were imprisoned or dead, and the city’s Vigilante even went into hiding for 8 years. This was all part of Joker’s masterfully executed plan.

The user goes into greater detail about why The Joker should be perceived as a hero, but the gist is that Batman became "a true villain, the kind that abandons his own principles" when he killed Harvey Dent, and while The Joker manipulated him into doing that, it was part of his plan to rid Gotham City of the vigilante. After all, he also robbed a mafia run bank, screwed up the finances of the city's mobsters, and helped oust the GCPD's crooked cops. Oh, and remember that clapping scene? This theory puts that in an entirely new light. While it came across as sarcastic, the poster believes that The Joker actually "believed in Gordon, one of the few officers on the force who was truly incorruptible." Was The Joker really showing his respect to Gordon? Did he really set out just to make Gotham City a better place? Share your thoughts on all this in the usual place.

RIP Ledger

I really wish we could have seen what Nolan's plans for Joker in TDKRs was, it really would have given some closure to his adaptation of the character and to the trilogy in general

RIP Ledger

This most likely wasn't the original intention, but interesting interpretation none the less…

Wtf?

Crime was at an all time low before Joker and Harvey Dent was swiftly cleaning up the city with Gordon and Bats.

What a bunch of bullshit. The crime was eliminated (Even though that was done in such retarded way in DKR) because Joker became the kingpin of all the Gotham crime and when he went down all of it fell apart.

You know what, I think Rhino was actually the hero in The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

In killing Spider-Man in that final scene, it's the reason why TASM died and now we have MCU Spidey.

That makes no sense whatsoever. Crime was already dwindling which is why the Joker was chastising the mob bosses for being in hiding. While it is true he probably wanted to eliminate the competition which helped clean the streets of Gotham...clearly he wanted chaos with himself heading it up. This is weak speculation.

@DrDoom

Never cared for that theory. The Joker (Not even Nolan's version) should have any real backstory or motivation, or at least not one that makes any sense. Obviously in a realistic world he'd probably HAVE to, but it still kinda takes away his mystique.

Doc Ock was the hero of Spider-Man 2, in nearly destroying all of New York, he gave Peter a reason why he needed to keep on being Spider-Man.

Vader was also the hero in Empire Strikes Back. He kept his daughter save by putting her boyfriend in carbonite.

I have a theory where Avi Arad actually is a Marvel Studios secret agent. He caused problems in Spidey 3, TASM, and TASM2 so much so now Sony is putting Spidey in the MCU.

They just took that BvS article out of main, and we get this... i mean sure, maybe it was just as bad as this one, but at least it had an actual source and scoop.

Wow. This is just stupid.

Ledger's Joker gets a lot of flack for knowing exactly what the outcome of all his bizarre, meticulous plans will be at any given moment... but when you factor in a counter-intuitive motivation for those plans, the Joker essentially has to have the understanding and powers of a GOD for any of this to make sense.

This isn't mind-blowing stuff. This is a simple misunderstanding and misrepresentation of basic narrative dynamics. The Joker is characterized here as a "hero" because he forces the heroes to make choices that lead to better outcomes in the story, but story structure has a word for characters like that: the ANTAGONIST. An opposing force has to push against the protagonist for him to grow and for things to change, because that's how drama works. All you have to do to claim that the antagonist is actually a "hero" is to say that he caused those changes to happen on purpose.

We're talking high school-level literary theory, here. Color me unimpressed.

@MrMartyMarvel

NEVER!!!

I have a theory where the reason Old Magneto is ok with sending Wolverine back in time in DOFP is because of a master plan he will accomplish!!!

And also I have a theory where Ultron was the hero of AOU because the city he took up it was full of crime and problems and in taking it out, it fixed a lot of issues and stuff.

Joker = Anarchy.
Batman = Totalitarianism.

Was the film really that subtle?

@DrDoom

That's what's awesome about Joker though, nobody really knows

I'ver heard the soldier origin, so many origins

Arkham Escape (maybe, Crane experimented on him)

He comes from a circus

It's because of his Wife

It's because of his Father

He's so far gone that he doesn't remember

"Escalation" like at the and of Batman Begins, Batman created him (He saw Batman and went crazy and needed to up the ante)

I think the funniest one I've heard is that he's actually Tyler Durton from Fight Club
