THE BATMAN Box Office Tracking Points To A Significantly Lower Opening Weekend Than Anticipated

Though long-range estimates pointed to The Batman taking in between $135 million - $185M over the course of its opening weekend, early box office tracking indicates a significantly lower total.

The first official pre-release box office tracking for The Batman is on the board (via Forbes), and Matt Reeves' reboot is not expected to reach the massive numbers originally predicted by long-range estimates.

Last week, Box Office Pro indicated that The Dark Knight's latest big-screen outing could debut anywhere between $135 million - $185 million over the course of its opening weekend in North America. However, analysts now believe the DC Comics film may only hit $80 million (or just over).

This is still a respectable bow - especially in the current "pandemic era" - but it is significantly lower than those early predictions, and may suggest that the movie won't be quite as big a hit as Warner Bros. will be hoping for. Then again, these are just initial domestic tracking numbers, and a lot can change over the next few weeks. IMAX tickets did sell out almost immediately, after all, and we wouldn't be surprised if the standard tickets that went on sale earlier today are also snapped up pretty quickly.

Box office estimates aside, The Batman's near three-hour runtime and 15A certificate (in certain locations) may have a negative impact on its takings. The movie is set to open on March 4, so we won't have to wait much longer to find out.

@TheRationalNerd - I'm sure it will do fine, but I've never seen a Batman movie with such mixed opinions. There are a lot of people that don't think this looks good. Facebook comments are always riddled with just as many negative comments as good.

Hell, even my mother, who isn't a superhero fan but LOVES Batman, has no interest in this. One of my good buddies that owns a comic shop that's been open for 20 years has no interest either.

I think a lot of us on this site get a little jaded because most of the people here, myself included, are super excited. But it isn't just Batfleck/Snyder fans that aren't interested in this unfortunately.

@CorndogBurglar - The Dark Knight is one of my favorite movies of all time. Tim Burton’s Batman was my favorite CMB growing up. The Batman is my favorite CMB character along with Spider-Man. But I have little interest in The Batman. Yeah, it looks good and all, but I’m just so tired of Batman reboots, the same character with different faces again and again and again.

@Moriakum - This. I have major Batman fatigue. Added with reboot fatigue.

If the Joker does appear I’ll just groan. It’s always the same things. Every Batman story has to have Joker in it; Superman has to go bad; there’s some other beats that seem very repetitive across DC media.

@CorndogBurglar - I think it just lacks a really good hook. Like...I'm sure it will be good. But it looks Nolan-adjacent; it could almost pass as a spinoff of that series. I was hoping for something as staggering fresh from TDK trilogy as Batman Begins was from Batman & Robin.

@Jrazz - It needed a BTAS aesthetic in live action. It needed to embrace the more comic booky elements that batfleck barely touched on.

@CorndogBurglar - this is the first Bat film I have no intention of watching. They just seem to be cranking up (or down?) the darkness with every subsequent film. We get it. Batman's dark. But Burton showed he can be in a fun movie as well.

@Jrazz - I totally get what you're saying. I would have liked a new series to follow something a little more fantastical. Something where characters like Clay face or Manbat, or Poison Ivy could show up in all their glory and fit right into their world while still feeling serious and not ridiculous. Something like alive action Batman: The Animated Series.

I know that's probably really hard to do though.

@KingMob20 - I hear you. I think something along the lines of Batman: The Animated Series would be perfect.

Characters are accurate, the world is pretty dark and serious, while also having those fantastical moments and characters without feeling too crazy or ridiculous.

Now, that doesn't mean I want to see Joker smacking people with a giant fish lol. It should definitely be more serious than that. But it should still leave room for those more over the top villains.

I think it will open much bigger than this

But this will be a true test for the DC and more specifically the Batman brand: how well will DC's biggest character do during this pandemic? 🤔

"But this will be a true test for the DC and more specifically the Batman brand: how well will DC's biggest character do during this pandemic?"

@lordSTALE

"Biggest test"? They did a Batman movie where they completely sidelined Superman, added Wonder Woman, and THAT couldn't even get a billion dollars at the box office, and this was without a global unpredicted pandemic.

This is far from a "biggest test". It is a test, I will acknowledge that, but it is hardly a test where they are going into it with their best foot forward.

This is how I should have phrased it

Got my tickets this morning.

Knowing that it will be available on streaming a month later, I'm sure is good news for plenty of people who still have no desire to be in a theater and who're willing to wait 45 days. I know my parents will definitely just watch it in April.
