THE BATMAN HBO Max Spinoff Show's Working Title Has Been Revealed: "Arkham"

We still don't know a whole lot about the planned The Batman HBO Max series currently in development, but the show's working title may suggest that we'll be spending some time in a very serious house...

Details on HBO Max's planned The Batman spinoff show have been few and far between, but it has been confirmed that the series will primarily focus on corruption in the Gotham City Police Department. However, it sounds like another iconic location from Batman lore may also receive some of the spotlight.

According to The Illuminerdi, the show's current working title is "Arkham."

While working titles don't always have very much (if anything) to do with the the plot of the series/film, this couldn't be a more obvious nod to the iconic institution where the Dark Knight sends the majority of his criminally insane foes. Whether that means Arkham Asylum will feature prominently in the show remains to be seen, but this small-screen spinoff would provide the perfect opportunity to introduce some of Batman's lesser-known villains.

We know that the show will be at least partially inspired by Gotham Central, the 2002 police procedural comic from Ed Brubaker and Greg Rucka. Director Matt Reeves has also confirmed that the prequel series will take place during "Year One" of the Dark Knight's reign as Gotham's protector, as a “masked vigilante…starts to unsettle the city”.

The series will zero in on the corruption that “goes back many years,” and will be told from the POV of an unnamed crooked cop. It's not known if Robert Pattinson will actually show up as The Caped Crusader, but Jeffrey Wright is expected to reprise his role as The Batman's Commissioner James Gordon. Colin Farrell (The Penguin) has been rumored to appear, but that's yet to be confirmed.

Wow, that seems original. I'm eagerly anticipating a storyline centered around something that has been rehashed time and time again.

An HBO Max show based in Reeves' vision of the mythos with a Serious House on Serious Earth vibe would be amazing

A show set around Arkham would be interesting,the villains we could see.The more obscure ones that wouldn't normally get used in the movies.

Usually working titles don't mean much and are random af but if you name it Arkham, well...

will be told from the POV of an unnamed crooked cop

Upside down dangling from a gargoyle is a weird angle to film a show from, but I'd tune in weekly.

Would be cool if a cop gets framed for not going along with corruption and is sent to Arkham and he has to align with criminals to escape and take down the police.

I could imagine a Murder Mystery Show where Arkham is the backdrop. A murder, secret passageways, the history of the asylum, a GCPD detective and a long list of suspects.

@Repian - Clue?

I lost most of my excitement for this when Winter left, but Reeves' vision for the Batman universe looks so so so cool. I wonder if he'll direct the pilot like Villeneuve is doing for the Dune show?

@tmp3 - if Suicide Squad bombed, Dune is doomed. It may not even get a show. Which is extremely depressing. Cuz I need Dune part 2

@tmp3 - same. Just finished the Sopranos and he was always on point. If he could've brought that to a Gotham PD show that's would've been amazing

I hope this series will help to introduce some of Batmans supernatural villians like Man-Bat and so in. That's the only thing I'm worried about with Reeves take on the character is that it will be too realistic.

@CurlyBill - Not sure how well the GCPD would handle those villains

@dracula - I ment more like some of them already being locked up in Arkham, if it's going to be a big location in the series. Though I would love to see an episode or two focused on the GCPD trying to hunt down Man-Bat and trying to figure out a way to capture him.

@CurlyBill - Reeves is heavily in touch with the char so I’m really not worried about that I think it’s inevitable just won’t be film 1.

Would be cool if the main plot deals with one of Batman's more obscure villains, like Calendar Man

@dracula -
I want to see Mad Hatter as a boss from the underworld. He kidnaps little girls, pours drugs into tea, and he's involved in child trafficking.

@Repian - that would work as well
