While attending a briefing from the representatives of BAE Systems, Stuart Nathan from theengineer heard an interesting response to an interesting comment.

While Future Protected Vehicles project leader Hisham Awad was showing his teams concept vehicle, (an unmanned skirmisher known as Raider) another journalist made the following comment.

‘I like that,’ he said. ‘Looks like the Batmobile.’

‘Ah!’ Awad replied, with a grin. ‘Glad you said that. That’s what we based it on.’

Pardon?

‘Yes, we liked the look of that, so we designed something similar.’

What, the Batmobile in Batman Begins and The Dark Knight?

‘Yes, that one. You see, it turns like a motorbike and it has the same wheel configuration.’

Yes, yes, but you’re basing a future fighting vehicle on something you saw in a film?

‘Well, why not?’ Awad replied. ‘In all seriousness, we decided that we didn’t have a monopoly on inspiration, and if we saw something in a film that we thought might be a good idea, why not take a look at it and see if there’s something practical we can develop?’

Yet again life imatates art! Now if only they could cure diseases instead of making better killing machines, but thats just my whacky thinking! Does look cool though.

Wasn't the tumbler, in realty, very unstaibled and in fact was filmed in low speeds and artificially speeded-up in the movies?

spindrift: Even if Nolan said that, it has nothing to do with this article. Nolan could have very easily been inspired by any number of military designs when creating the Tumbler. That, in no way, means that BAE did not borrow concept ideas from what appeared in the films, as they clearly claim to have done.

@SpideySquad- Actually in the bonus features of Batman Begins they bring up the fact that the did not think the tumbler would perform very well, and it cost so much to make that they only had a couple (maybe even just 1) but they were surprised at how well it did, for some scenes they even took it up to 100 mph but obviously used camera tricks to make it look faster.

Yep Carteg, that's exactly what they were thinking 'let's kill lots of people'! If by people, you mean terrorists who want to destroy our CBM loving lives! No way could they possibly be creating an UNMANNED fighting vehicle to protect our freedoms and keeping our servicemen and women out of harms way.

Actually SpideySqad the batmobile you're thinking about is the one from 89...you can clearly see in the scene in which vale is in the car that the frames were sped up. That had the impractical design. The tumbler was a beast of a machine that could do everything you saw in the movies except those super jumps.

They should make that like a deployable drone from a larger vehicle like a personnel carrier or tank or even make a sea version for hunting pirates.

It's a little sad that they saw The Dark Knight and said" i like that look lets base it off of that.

the people that designed the tumbler didn't steal military tech ideas. in the batman begins bonus features, they said it was meant to look like a cross between a lamborghini and a hummer to give it the sleekness of bruce wayne and the harshness of batman.

I'm for anything that helps kill the enemy before they kill our guys. I don't care if it's based off a CBM or if they turn a Cuisinart into a bomb. If it keeps our guys alive go for it.
