Why You Shouldn't Worry About "Batman v Superman" and "The Dark Knight Returns"

Ever since the Comic Con 2013 announcement of a "Batman vs Superman" movie, there has been a strange air of distrust from the source material Zack Snyder is drawing from...

It is finally happening, folks! A match made in heaven (or hell depending on where you stand)! The man who brought us Watchmen and Man of Steel is bringing the big two grand-daddies of comics on to the big screen! Batman and Superman

At 2013's Comic Con, Zack Snyder took to the stage to announce that the movie was happening. He brought aboard Harry Lennix to give everyone the big hint. The crowd erupted in cheers as he finishes the passage from the legendary/infamous "The Dark Knight Returns". A story, as we all know, that depicts Superman and Batman at odds. With Batman having the advantage. (How a nuke can weaken a man that walks on the sun is beyond me) An important thing to remember this is non canon. Back to the point....

After the dust settled, and everyone had some time to think, worries began to brew. How could the guy that just brought back Superman into a modern day, adapt a story about Batman basically beating him into submission? How dare he! The thing is...he isn't *adapting* "The Dark Knight Returns". This is by far the most important thing to remember. He is using it as some influence to help tell this story. This chapter of Superman and a new Batman's life. In fact, he even says at the announcement:

"We are not adapting this thing, but it is the thing that will help tell that story"

(As seen here around the 3:10 mark)

It appears many people missed that. And fear this movie will be a Bat loving fest. Zack loves Batman...and he loves Superman. We should also reffer to this video, to those that are worried still. A video of Zack Snyder on the big "Who would win".

That should say enough.

Also, this conversation with Kevin Smith around 2:40

I should add that personally, I do really enjoy "The Dark Knight Returns". I think its an awesome Batman story, and ends there. Obviously, not a greatly written Superman. But I believe we can have something truly special here.  It is still 100% possible  for this movie to be influenced by elements of that story and have it's very own, distinct feel to it. There is another little movie, in recent memory, that was inspired by the events of this little book about this little character:

Christopher Nolans' "The Dark Knight" and "The Long Halloween".

The movie had some very large parallels to one of the biggest Batman story lines ever written. Large ones being Batman's relationship with Gordon, Harvey Dent, and the GCPD in general. How corrupt they were, and would work for the highest bidder. The birth of Two Face. "Batman Begins" delved more into the gang problem that was present in the book, but there is no denying the relationship between the book and movie. A big change Nolan made was making Joker a large player in the story, when he was a small catalyst in the book.

I fully understand that Snyder is not Nolan, but we have no reason to think that this movie will be "The Dark Knight Returns: Ft. Superman". A little reminder of what we have seen, and do know:

- The film features WAY more Superman supporting characters than Batman ones
- We know a large portion takes place in both Gotham, and Metropolis
- There is a large LexCorp presence
- Lex Luthor is the main villain.
- We have a good bit of Superman set photos, none of Batman
- Snyder has said the film is about Superman finding his place on earth (Not Kal, not Clark) after the events of "Man of Steel"
-The film IS PULLING from good inspiration, if the right elements are drawn from that book

In conclusion, just remember what we do know, my fellow comicbook movie fans. It can be easy to let the 10,000 rumors get to your head. Just remember, the film is done shooting. How many pictures of a tangible, real, Batman did we see? In this day and age? And people are believing that everyone on the internet and their mother has read the script and has infinite scoops on it. Be patient. This is going to be a big surprise. Can't wait for Zack Snyders'...

good write-up. I agree folks are making something out of nothing and too big a deal about that. Hopefully you're right.

I do love this though:

If BVSDOJ is adaption of Dark Knight Returns same way Batman Begins was adaption of Year One or Dark Knight was from Long Halloween, then we have no problem.

When adapting from source material, Zack Snyder is a gift from the film gods. When fabricating from "not source material", Zack Snyder is just an filmmaker with a distinct visual style. That being said, we have great source material here, so expect Batman Very Superman to be incredible.

I think it'll be fine. Somewhere between good and great. I have my worries and there are aspects of it that I'm convinced won't work as well as they want them to, but most films - especially big budget action/hero films - have moments like that.

My only real concern is that its going to be a long slog between here and the release date.

My problem with Man of Steel. Sure it was moody, and the color was so drab and wasn't uplifting at all. But that's the way they chose to tell this new story, and I chose to watch it. I thought it was ok. Not my favorite, not one of me least favorites. Anyways, my problem comes from the fight with Zod. No I'm not gonna bitch about the massive amounts of collateral damage. Just the fact that these two men were so powerful, and beating the shit out of each other, to the point it was destroying most of the city, and at the end, not a single scratch. No tears in the costume either. If someone as powerful AS Superman, can't even hurt Superman, what the hell is Batman gonna do?

Man of Steel set the limits for Superman's powers in this universe. So they have to make sure they don't contradict themselves with Batman vs Superman. That's why I believe Kryptonite will be introduced.

@ Wylee

Kryptonite will almost have to be introduced. Luthor is in the film, and thats kid of his thing.

But aside from that, like you said, Superman is just too much for Batman. Even in a robotic suit, Batman wouldn't even be able to BEGIN to hurt him.

At the same time, even if Batman has Kryptonite, it would be a cop-out to have Batman beat him with it. Superman has fought countless villains, countless times that have used Kryptonite on him, and not a single one of them has ever beaten him. The one vilain to truly beat Superman was Doomsday, and he did it without Kryptonite.

So I don't like the idea of Batman using Kryptonite to win. Maybe to weaken Supes, but he still should not win.

If people didn't like Man of Steel that same group will probably find fault in this.I highly doubt Synder style is going to change so it will probably have the same artistic problems.

The movie plot is riddle with holes Batman vs Superman is just a terrible idea for people who can't suspend their disbelief.A man vs an alien who can move faster and is stronger then he could possibly ever be.So it more then far fetch that any human could challenge him.

But I did really like what they did with the oil rig. That he COULD hold it up, but that physics doesn't allow for it to be held like that in one small spot, so it collapses around him. So much better than the old movies when he's flying around holding up the statue of liberty, or a whole freaking island in Returns.

Loved Man of Steel.. I think it was one of the best comic book adaptation.. sure it got flaws but i think BVS will be better storywise with the same level of action.

I trust Snyder will do something really great of it. Seriously, can't wait for 2016 and the start of DCCU

The problem with this movie is Warner Brothers using a shameless stunt to draw in fans. There is no reason to even use the Dark Knight Returns as an influence because it is counter productive to what fans REALLY wanted and what Warner Brothers should be doing, and that is creating a Justice League universe. How does having a "grizzled" retired Batman who at first meeting is fighting with Superman - accomplish that?. In the Marvel universe, when Captain America and Iron Man come to blows...the reasons behind it have been built up over several films. BvS is completely out of the blue and nobody is even familiar with THIS Batman let alone his reasons for picking a fight with Superman or vice versa. It is nothing more than a shameless stunt for a studio too lazy to put in the work, acquire the acting talent (outside of Henry Cavill); or focus on a bringing to the screen a good original story. This movie will not make as much money as Man of Steel and Warner Brothers will be left with yet another failed attempt at meeting the ever growing standards of what a well crafted graphic novel could be which has been set by Marvel.
