Will The Next Batman Movie Be Shot Entirely In IMAX?

Will The Next Batman Movie Be Shot Entirely In IMAX?

Ain't It Cool News is reporting that it may very well be. They say "Inception" may have been made first to test the process...

Yes I know there has not been confirmation that this movie will even happen yet, but with snippets of news like this popping up I think it's certainly promising!

Harry over at AICN reported this. He said that while his sources are reliable, it should be treated as a rumor until confirmed.

"I have to say up front that the nature of this story is a rumor, not because I don't have solid sources, I do... but because it could simply NOT WORK OUT. That happens sometimes. It is something that the production teams are "considering" - but it is an extremely costly process, but one that I believe we would all love to see happen.

The THIRD chapter of Christopher Nolan's Caped Crusader's saga could very well be FULLY shot in IMAX, not IMAX Digital - but the beautiful, stunning IMAX that we saw pieces of THE DARK KNIGHT in.

Now this is something that I'm sure a lot of you will feel is a no-brainer. Nolan blew us away with the IMAX sequences in that film - but it was a very tough process to work in. It was mainly due to the limitations of how many IMAX rigs are available. Not only that, but lenses had to be created, adapted ,and god forbid one broke down. Part of the reason that Nolan went forward with INCEPTION first - besides taking a creative break from the cape and cowl adventures... was possibly to create a few new IMAX cameras made to his specs. Once again - the cost of shooting an entire feature film on IMAX... the stock, the time it takes to reset, to load, to move the cameras... Well... it is daunting, but as Nolan proved with DARK KNIGHT - the difference is stunning.

I'm going to continue to pursue this story further - to try to get some official comments.

Kinda strange hearing rumors of how a movie that has not even been officially green lit could be filmed! But there you go.

Gambitfreak@ that's my point. Can you only watch it in IMAX. Can't believe they would limit thier boxoffice potential like that.

Just another excuse to have the film delayed. I do look forward to it, though.

Does anyone mind explaing what parts from TDK were shot with IMAX cameras? I did not see the movie at the IMAX and I hadn't even been aware that there were actually some parts that were shot using IMAX cameras.

If you don't mind, please share the beautiful, stunning experience with those of us (GambitFreak and all other not so privileged children) who were not foturnate enough to see the film at the IMAX.

Most of the action scenes were filmed in imax, on the blu ray or dvd, everytime the black lines go at the top and the bottom that was filmed in imax.

To answer superdogs question no you can watch it any where as part of the tdk was filmed in imax cameras and it was still shown in cinemas, the quality isnt as good think dvd to blu ray. Also imax is shot at a different ratio which is why the black lines dissapear. As imax screens are more square.

We have close by but it was sold out months in advance for dark knight. Can't imagine they'd be able to accomadate everyone

four20@ the opening bank robbery scene, the armored car batpod chase scene, the ending fight scene in the construction building where batman fought the cops and the joker. I believe that was it.

Imax is 150mm film and regular film (or celluloid) is 70mm, they shoot regular movies in 70mm and then transfer it to 35mm film sometimes. Thus Imax can be transfered to 70mm film and shown as a regular movie.

They film reg movies in 70mm 'cause it is more sharp and clear. If they transfer Imax (150mm) to 70mm it will be all the more clearer and sharper defined. So it is capable to show Imax in reg theaters.

The problem with showing all movies in Imax is that celluloid is roughly 1/2 the cost of a movie! It would be extremely expensive to shoot EVERY movie in Imax.

I would prefer they shoot all movies in Imax but it isn't cost-effective, unfortunately! Imax theaters use JBL speakers that are pro speakers and are way clearer and dynamic than the reg theaters and the sound is far superior!

this just means that the film will be shot with imax cams they can still be watched as normal people who have the dark knight on bluray will know this because certain parts of the film the aspec ration of the screen changes everytime a city view scene appears also the start of the film is shot in imax truly makes it look stuning to watch.

Great news, IMAX films are visually stunning, I went to watch Beowulf in 3D when I was doing Film Studies.. Oh man!..

According to the special features on The Dark Knight Blu-Ray the entire opening bank scene was shot in IMAX.

There is alot of talk in Hollywood that further down the line here ten or so years here everything will move to IMAX and some other 3d technologies, maybe even holograms.

I would not doubt, for a second, that Nolan took Inception, at least partially, to further his facility with the process. Man, all I can say, is that if the sequel to The Dark Knight is full IMAX... well I think my mind will be too blown to say anything at all. I would also not mind a delay on The Avengers if it were shot full IMAX.

^ Obviously, just because a movie's shot in full IMAX doesn't mean it can't be translated to standard.

My problem with IMAX is in the bluray version of Dark Knight the IMAX scenes went to full screen and the regular filmed sceens went back to wide screen- WHY? If you go through an HD tv why couldn't the whole movie stay wide screen or just stay full screen without the expense of cutting the edges of a scene. I'd hate the idea of watching more movies at home flipping back and forth for just a few scenes shot in IMAX

pretty sure when or if nolan decides to come back to the franchise and use IMAX cameras they will be lighter and much easier to film an entire movie.....
sadly i wish my local IMAX theater wasnt the fake imax
={ not cool !!

@Assassin, I didn't know blue ray did that with the Imax images. I don't have Dark Knight in Blue ray yet. I'll be buying it soon!

I sure hope Nolan does make the 3rd Batman and films it in Imax, 150mm, film! That would be amazing!

For all you people who wonder what the difference with Imax is
If dvd is 480p and hd is 1080p. Imax is roughly 4000p it has twice the res of hd the problem is the cost if it could be filmed in digital it would be no prob but shytty 35mm film is about 20 mega pixels so you need 100 or so mp to film in imax. I don't even think they are any where near that tech yet but then again who knows and this if for real imax not that digital 3d crap

Nolan's main problem wasnt the technical aspects - it was the noise of the camera itself. He stated in several interviews that the Imax cameras, while running, sounded like freight trains - and it was too distracting to the crew and actors. You cant deliver performances of the likes of each in TDK with a train running thru the middle of your scene. I'm sure, if this article holds out, that he is tinkering with the technology (camera, lenses, etc) to see if it is possible. And like the wise Mr. Harry pointed out - it may not be.

DDD- don't get me wrong Dark Knight along with Incredible Hulk, and Watchmen are the best looking blurays I ever saw, but just that thing with the scenes in IMAX take up the full screen, while the other scenes stayed in wide screen. Still buy it, you won't be sorry

I hope so because the scenes shot in IMAX were much much better especially on the blu-ray! the quality difference between the IMAX and regular scenes were really noticable in HD.

A Batman movie shot entirely in IMAX would be absolutely amazing - beyond breathtaking.
Plus you would be able to watch the film in a normal theatre you wouldn't need to go to an IMAX.

We saw the IMAX scenes in the film no matter how you saw it, so a full film would be the same - you just don't get the full effect outside an IMAX theatre.

Btw the IMAX scenes in TDK are:

1. Introduction (Bank Heist)

2. Hong Kong (Capturing Lau)

3. Chase (Truck Flip)

4. Skyscraper (Joker Fight)

5. End (Batman on the Run)

And IMAX for those who have yet to experience it is the highest and sharpest visual and audio film is able to capture.
(Closest you'll get to it at home is watching Blu-Ray on a HD Wide Screen with full surround sound speakers)

I had a thought - imagine that there was a combination of IMAX and Virtual 3D (the camera developed by James Cameron for Avatar) wonder if that's the next step!?

That's cool, I guess. But this doesn't really concern me much. What concerns me is what currently concerns Nolan and his team when it comes to this. They know that some fans didn't like the movie.
And they are sweating whether or not they can top the last one.
They know we are dying for another movie.
But they just can't deal with the idea of it not being as good as the last one. So I understand the reticence.

that would be awesome, but is it really necessary? i mean even for scenes that just take place in a room with two characters talking? seems like an expensive, drawn out process for little things that might not need it
