1. Jaime Alexander is Wonder Woman
Remember back in November last year when Jaimie Alexander said she was having "conversations with Warner Bros/DC". Everyone fell in love with the idea, as Jaimie Alexander had just given another solid preformance as Lady Sif. Would it be that much of a stretch that Warner Bros decided to play it safe and casted a Wonder Woman who already proved she could be a believable tough female badass. John Campea, a member of the panel where Alexander gave her first hint gave us the biggest tease when he claimed that Jaimie Alexander had told him something that "he couldn't tell us". Even when Variety came out to say Jaime was out of the running and that the frontrunners where Gal Gadot, Olga Kureylenko, and Elodie Yung people simply brushed it off. The last big push for this rumor was when Jaime Alexander still would not give a straight answer when asked about the rumor on Jay Leno. As it woud turn out Gal Gadot, probably the most obscure actress in the line up got the role instead.
2. Wonder Woman is Kryptonian
The absolute rage this one caused was staggering. This rumor claimed that the Amazons are descendents of Supergirl, making them Kryptonian. Like many of the rumors on this list it sounds fairly logical. DC likes its serious science right? So why go through all the Gods and magic when you can scientifically explain Amazons ancient aliens style. It seemed like DC would do this so everyone believed it. And when they believed it they went crazy. Fans loudly shouted, it was disrespectful to Wonder Woman, it was lazy writing, DC was to realistic, but fans should have known one more thing . IT WAS NOT EVEN A RUMOR, the idea of Wonder Woman being Kryptonian came from a mailbag on the site Batman on Film. Wonder Woman being kryptonain was all really a speculation from Batman on Film in response to a question about Wonder Woman's origin. Somewhere along the line other news sites started to report that speculation as a rumor which in turn caused all the chaos. Could Wonder Woman still be Kryptonian? My guess, most likely not.
3. The Batman Casting rumors
After the end of the Dark Knight we never expected that Batman was coming back to film in 2015 (sadly now 2016). The question on everyone's mind was who will be the new Batman. At first we all believed Chris Nolan's franchise might still be canon. For a while rumors of JGL's NightWing taking Batman's place in BVS sprang up, and a fifty million dollar offer for Bale to come back was also a commonlly spread rumor on the internet. Then came the truckloads of fancasts and rumors of possible actors who got auditons. Names like Tyler Hoechlin of Teen wolf, Supernatural's Jensen Ackles, Joe Manganeillo from Trueblood, Ryan Gosling, Josh Brolin, and even Scott Adkins. Suprisingly much like another casting choice i'll get to it was the person no one mentioned, Ben Affleck.
I'll leave you this comment i found on the internet about a likely deduction on who Batman will be, it really is amazing that Ben Affleck is none of the things he's describing.
So with today’s ComicCon announcement about the dark knight appearing along side the man of steel in the next big DC film, I've seen a lot of people elsewhere going epic crazy fan-casting who they want to don the cape and cowl.
A lot of that fan-casting though is, frankly, way off the mark and unlikely to happen. Because everyone and their mother seems to be making a few big mistakes. Like choosing an established name. Or casting way too old.
People like Jon Hamm or Ryan Gosling.
You want to know who’ll be the next caped crusader? Think younger, think unknown or barely known. Think Henry Cavill a year ago, think Christian Bale in 2004, think Tobey Maguire in 2000.
Also, think non-American born.
The next hero of the night is going to be someone between approximately 25 and 30, with maybe a few years lee-way on either end. He’s going to be someone with some experience under his belt, but not enough that people really know his name. And he’s not going to have been born in the US of A. How do I know this?
They’ve said before - I think it was Snyder and/or Goyer in an interview right after the film came out - that Man of Steel is the beginning of the new DC cinematic collective universe, and that Superman’s arrival on the scene is what inspires others to take on the mantle of being heroes. So take any thoughts of Batman being older, wiser, established, and throw them out the window. This Batman is going to be new to the scene and new to the job. Likewise, they won’t want either hero making the other look too old or too young. They’ll want them on even footing with each other.
At the same time they don’t want to upstage their new crown prince Superman. If they pick a “name" like Hamm or Gosling, it makes Cavill second-string. Because even with “Man of Steel" under his belt, he still doesn’t yet have that kind of instant recognition.
As for why the new guy will not be born in the US of A?
It’s a trend I’ve noticed.
The vast majority of superheroes aren’t played American born actors anymore. Likely because someone, somewhere, tested audiences and found that international audiences respond poorly to Americans playing heroes, but are more favorable to European or Australian’s playing them. Think about it. Wolverine, Batman, Superman, Thor, Spider-Man… all UK or Aussie. Sure, there are still some Americans playing heroes. RDJr's Iron Man, Captain America, whoever plays Hulk. But the trend has been going more and more towards non-American actors for these big tent-poles, and I doubt it'll change.
So… IMHO, what can can say about the next actor to play the Bat is...
-
25-30 years old
-
Likely not American born
-
Not a ‘name’ celebrity
4. Bryan Cranstan is Lex Luthor
Another case of "it sounds like it could be true so it must be true". This is the rumor that refused to die, even more so than Jaimie Alexander. At the time of this rumor coming out Bryan Cranston was finishing up Breaking Bad and had proved to the world he could be a badass calculating villian that could easily transition to Lex Luthor. What gave this rumor even more potency was the fact that Cranston was already the most popular fancast for Lex. Everything seemed so perfect, except for when you start looking for where this rumor came from. Three words Cosmic Book News, a site that is even worse than Latino Review. For whatever reason people believed them and the "sources" including once again John Campea kept saying Cranston was a lock for the role. Personally I think that the amount of confidance that Cranston was going to get the role only added to the heartbreak caused when he didn't. This individual rumor in my opinion was the best of last year, but my next topic take the cake.
5. The Batman V Superman Script
Ah yes, the script that trumped the mighty El Mayimbe. This script is the source of nearly all Latino Reviews BVS exclusives since comicon 2013. This script gave us many memorable rumors, such as NightWing, Jason Todd, Carrie Kelly, Jon Stewet, Kyle Rayner, Guy Freaking Gardener, Kord Industries, Leslie Thompkins, Morgan Edge, David Cain, Aquaman, and Doomsday all making appearences. But El Mayimbe also gave us some plot points from the film from this script as well remember, Lex Luthor being a former tattoed gangmember, Superman dying, and Darksied being the justice League villian. El Mayimbe would have been rattling off details from this script for the next two years where it not for a twitter user by the name of Arrogant Alien step up saying it was his. During all this confusion the script leaked to the internet and many people judged for themselves that the script was bogus. But was the script real? It hasn't been officially denied by Warner Bros, yet if you do read it I think you'll agree that even though David Goyer gets alot of crap, he's not the kind of guy to spell Lois Lane wrong multiple times.
So what rumor was your favorite? And what do you think about all the current ones out right now?
