I am here to address the issue of Lois Lane not being sucked into the Phantom Zone. Some say it is bad writing, some say it's because "Superman has to save her anyway". Both could be true, but for those negatives naysayers have, fans can also have their own postive look on things. Some have even accused this film of "spelling everything out" for the viewers (ie. the explanation of terraforming) which is the only example of that. This film leaves lots of things open for debate that are meant to be assumed. Which I can applaud Snyder, such as the Kryptonian suit being left on his FAMILYS ship. Explaining why it is there. Moving on...

The plan to send them to the Phantom Zone was explained on the air strip where the military loads Kal's pod onto the carrier. It was said a singularity would be created when the drives collided with one another. "Like a black hole" as General Swanwick says. That is the key here. "like* a black hole", not "it's a black hole". It is only like one in the sense things will be pulled into it.

When the time comes and the drives collide, we watch as the Kryptonians are sucked in, and the ship collapses into it. We are also able to notice that bits of debris from Metropolis are being sucked in, while Lois falls freely. So, here is the theory.

I've always assumed (since my 2nd of 37 viewings of the film) that the Phantom Zone was only sucking in Kryptonian things. And the reason debris was going in was because of it being pounded on by the World Engine (which has been stopped by this point) and we know it was pounding Kryptonian particles into the air and surrounding land. This is why debris was getting sucked in, and Lois was not (while Kal is very clearly being pulled on). And lets face it, if she was also being pulled in, he still would have gotten her.

I am also here to address the rumors of Superman working for the government in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. I believe these rumors have only been running wild because of the film drawing inspiration from the Dark Knight Returns. Which features a  very differently written Superman than ever before. Which I find to be terrible. Some believe he is going to be working for them "to atone for the destruction" in Man of Steel. "The people of earth should be torn, some will be scared of him. Some will hate him", shout the naysayers. I still believe if this happened, the majority of people would be supporters, and we saw very clearly Zod give a message to the world showing he's not the good guy here. But how did we see someone react to this that was directly involved in the destruction?

"He saved us." That is correct. He saved a good 7 billion people from asphyxiation and a Kryptonian gone mad. People are bound to see it this way. Supporters and non supporters of Superman in this universe will exist, I won't deny it. But this is a reaction we saw. There are other ways for the public to view him positively other than working for the government.

Very little damage actually occured during Zod and Supermans fight to begin with. The World Engine causes all the ruckus. While only one building falls due to Zods volcano eyes during that sequence. Everything else was small potatoes. So to me, these rumors are just silly fan speculation, when everything in Man of Steel says otherwise of this. With two very obvious examples.

During the interrogation scene, Superman approaches Swanwick telling him "You're scared of me because you can't control me. You don't, and you never will." Seems like a pretty declarative statement to me.

 The second example:

As Superman crashes a military surveillance drone, he and Swanwick have another conversation.

-"Then I'll ask the obvious question: How do we know you won't one day act against America's interests?"

-"I grew up in Kansas, general. I'm about as American as it gets. Look, I'm here to help, but it has to be on my own terms. You have to convince Washington of that."

While leaving and trusting the General to take care of it. Pretty straight forward Superman characterization that is consistent with him.

So there you have it folks, sound off below while I wipe my geek-sweat away!

not a very good theory regarding the phantom zone "black hole" that was pulling everything in except louis. poor writing by the way i still enjoyed the film.

*Sigh*

"Plot holes" have nothing to do with Lois falling to the ground while everything else gets sucked into the Phantom Zone. That's not a plot hole. And seriously, "debunking" that issue doesn't all of a sudden make Man of Steel into a good movie. It had PLENTY of issues, and Lois denying the laws of physics isn't even close to being the worst flaw.

Who is Louis?

You must be the guy that wrote the fake script.

Thanks for the opinion though. My theory still seems pretty obvious.

@pasto what exactly do you mean by that? :P

@Sauronsbane I* never said it was a plot hole. I just see people calling it that on the web.

I still think it was a good film, regardless of other peoples personal issues with it.

@Gusto Thanks.
and what do you mean? Just that I don't know dick about a Replicator being present, doesn't mean it cant be on a ship filled with future-like tech. Just curious where you are getting that from.
SauronsBANE
SauronsBANE - 8/21/2014, 1:42 PM
@neihofft, Whatever you want to call it, it's not a flaw or an issue that deserves this much time and effort dedicated to "debunking" it. It's a non-factor. Man of Steel wasn't ruined for anyone just because Lois fell when everything else was getting sucked into the Phantom Zone. There's SO many other aspects of this movie that merits serious discussion and debate. This is not one of them.

@sauronsbane I never state here that this is the big issue with the movie or that it fixes it. It is simply something I wanted to take the time to address. My own personal time, but I apologize for not asking you first if I should :P

I'm interested in talking about your other issues with the film though (civilly)

I agree with SauronsBANE but was anyone else turned off by the lenses used to film the movie? I know Snyder is praised for his visual mastery etc. but I really can't see anything worthy of praise visually in this film. Looked a little too plastic-like with an underwhelming use of CGI.

The image just felt dry in both action and non-action sequences and the color palette certainly didn't help

@neihofft, Oh don't get me wrong, you have every right to talk about what you want to talk about...but writing an entire half of an article about it definitely makes it seem like this was a big flaw in the movie, and that by debunking it, we should come to the conclusion that Man of Steel is a better movie than we give it credit for. I mean, what's the point in writing about it in the first place then?

As for my issues with the movie...there's a lot of them haha. No need to get into any drawn-out debates!

Man of Steel IS a good movie. Haters can say what they want but they're in the minority. Nice article though.

@Sauronsbane Youre assuming a lot of things I never stated. I have just seen people bring this up, I had just watched the movie, and felt like addressing it. Im more interested in what people think about the Superman/Government thing and his image.

@Dingbat Amen man. Thats the truth. The minority is just quite vocal is all.

@Bo1208 I disagree. To each his own, either way Zack has his old cinematographer back from Watchmen. So expect a slight ( but better) change in the look of the filming.

Some of you guys are idiots. I am pretty sure the film indicated that all Kryptonians would be sucked into the PZ and that is why Superman couldn't be there to deliver the bomb. Lois was falling to the ground and Superman went to rescue her. You could clearly see that the effects of the PZ were only on Superman and the Kryptonians. If you didn't see that you are either blind or looking for something to say that the film was bad.

Everything is spot on here.

Especially the phantom zone part. It was my understanding from the very first time I saw it that the Krypton stuff was being sucked back in. You can clearly see Kal being pulled toward it while Lois isn't. Your explanation on why some of the Earth objects being sucked in makes total sense to me too. Those objects were directly influenced by the terraforming beam. They were just as much Kryptonian by that point as they were Earth.

Does this movie have a few minor issues, sure, I suppose you could find some if you wanted to.

But some of the things people gripe about are just plain ridiculous.

Good to know someone else saw the movie as I did.

I really liked MoS. But it would be foolish to assume it was flawless. Pa Kent's death makes me laugh everytime I watch it. And not in a good way.

There is no scientific explanation as to why Lois wasn't sucked into the Phantom Zone other than David Goyer being a shit writer, just like in Batman Begin with both the Microwave emitter and the pouring of the fear gas into the water main. Firstly water mains are pressurized so there is no way they can be sitting there pouring shit into a water main through a broken pipe. Secondly I'm sure people have boiled water or taken hot showers in Gotham, so people had to have been breathing in that crap for a while. Finally, considering the human body is around 75% water, a microwave that vaporizes all water in the area would have surely blown apart any humans in the area. There is no scientific loophole to any of these, the only holes in these theories are the plot holes that Goyer has in every single one of his movies. I don't think WB trusts him to do shit anymore, Alan Horn had even stated back when that David Goyer is a good idea guy but has trouble executing his ideas, they are pursuing Chris Terrio to write Justice League.

I do, however, think that Superman should have a split reaction to the events of MoS. Half should hate him - those who lost their homes, family members, etc. and those who can look past all that and say that he saved the world - Daily Planet members, the family he saved, Military. Pretty much how it is with the real life audience of the movie. It's pretty split, some think Superman was the reason for the destruction in the film, and others say that he's the reason he saved everyone.

It sucks bc I had such high hopes for Man of Steel, and while the movie looked beautiful thanks to Snyder, the plot and dialog were so lacking. It wasn't a bad movie by any means at all, but compared to the carefully constructed Marvel movies like Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain America 2, it was severely lacking. Hopefully Batman v Superman is awesome, but I've learned not to expect anything from DC/Warner Bros when it comes to comic book movies.
