Zack Snyder Reveals His Surprising Second Choice To Play BATMAN If Ben Affleck Had Declined

Zack Snyder has revealed which actor he had in mind to play the Dark Knight in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice on the off chance that Ben Affleck turned down the role, and we are positive you will never guess who it is!

During his recent appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, The Army of the Dead director was asked if he had anyone else lined up to step into the iconic cape and cowl if Affleck had passed, and revealed that he was considering casting a lesser-known actor as Bruce Wayne: Matthias Schoenaerts!

"I was talking to (Matthias) a lot about it," said Snyder. "He never got in the suit, but I did do a bunch of mock-ups of him, because Ben was on the fence. And I don't blame him. Everyone should be on the fence when you're asked, 'Do you want to play Batman?"

Just in case you don't recognize the name, Schoenaerts is a Belgian actor who has appeared in the likes of Rust and Bone, The Drop, and Red Sparrow. More recently, he made an impression as immortal warrior Booker in Netflix's The Old Guard.

It sounds like Affleck did take some convincing to accept the part, so there's a chance Schoenaerts really could have ended up playing Batman. He certainly seems like an outside-the-box pick, but could have done something interesting with the character for sure.

What do you guys think? Could you see Matthias Schoenaerts suiting-up as the Caped Crusader?

I'm just here to say the only thing I saw Schoenaerts in was Red Sparrow, and I might as well not say that since that movie was so instantly forgettable.

His first choice wasn’t all that good

@BlackBeltJones

Affleck reminds me more of Bruce Wayne that Pattinson does. The Batman is probably going to be incredible but Affleck was a good choice for the role.

I just finished watching Army of the Dead. The film was alright until the third warmed up to the conclusion. It's decent but not Snyder's best film imo. I look forward to seeing more of his involvement on Netflix.

Although Matthias is an under appreciated good actor, I can't quite picture him playing Bruce Wayne if he was ever casted to this role.

Overall, Snyder need to take a break from talking of DC. He did his part but something tells me he's gone through numbers of mental breakdown due the loss of his daughter on few occasions. The man seriously need help.

I’m glad Affleck did it. He was good in BvS. Not so good in the Whedon League, slightly decent in the Snydercut.
I blame bad writing for the JL movies.

No one knows who the people you hire are Zack.
Stick with traditional movie stars. Your risky choices are mainly based on looks anyway. Half the newbies you hire can't act for shit.

@JFerguson - Yes. Only hire big name actors and keep all movie roles for movie stars. And when they all did then just reboot Hollywood... That's what you're saying right?

@kazuma - For blockbusters that highly rely on profit and star power, yes. At least hire some folks with a few indie movies under their belt. Ray Fisher, Wayne T. Carr, and Matthias Schoenaerts don't even have that.

And Gal Gadot was hired for looks, although she has improved in the new movies I'll give her that. She appeared in the Fast franchise so she doesn't count as a newbie

@JFerguson - So you'd rather have star power than acting chops?

Snyder can make fun of himself (start at about 2:18):

@LSHF - Glad Snyder has it in him to be a good sport, which was never in doubt. Heard he's a great guy on set. Also this is probably one of the first times in a while where he doesn't sound tired. DCEU was probably killing the guy.

Very surprising considering Josh Broken was my pick and has since said he was quite disappointed he didn't get it. Of course Zack has said that a tell Batman was mandatory.
