There's a lot of excitement surrounding
Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), and now new details about the
Suicide Squad spinoff have been revealed courtesy of Margot Robbie. During a recent
Vogue profile, the actress took them on a tour of the set and confirmed that the female-led superhero movie will indeed be R-Rated.
Asked why she wants to take the franchise in that direction, she said: "I think there’s a perception that a PG female-led action film is kind of considered a chick flick." That's an interesting point, but it's a shame to think that so many young girls will be unable to see these badass female heroes in action.
Regardless, with a budget of $75 million, according to Robbie, Warner Bros. can certainly afford to take a risk with the rating and the addition of a primarily female cast and crew means that the lead character won't be dressed in the sort of skimpy outfits we saw Harley Quinn don in David Ayer's Suicide Squad.
"That’s what happens when you have a female producer, director, writer," the movie's costume designer, Erin Benach, noted before Robbie added: "Yeah, it’s definitely less male gaze–y."
With Warner Bros. skipping Comic-Con, it's hard to say when we'll get a trailer for Birds of Prey, but these remarks certainly leave us with plenty to think about.
