BIRDS OF PREY Will Be Rated-R And Is Less "Male Gaze-y" According To Harley Quinn Actress Margot Robbie

In a revealing new interview, Margot Robbie explains why Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) won't be a PG-13 "chick flick" and the reason the costumes aren't so revealing.

There's a lot of excitement surrounding Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), and now new details about the Suicide Squad spinoff have been revealed courtesy of Margot Robbie. During a recent Vogue profile, the actress took them on a tour of the set and confirmed that the female-led superhero movie will indeed be R-Rated.

Asked why she wants to take the franchise in that direction, she said: "I think there’s a perception that a PG female-led action film is kind of considered a chick flick." That's an interesting point, but it's a shame to think that so many young girls will be unable to see these badass female heroes in action.

Regardless, with a budget of $75 million, according to Robbie, Warner Bros. can certainly afford to take a risk with the rating and the addition of a primarily female cast and crew means that the lead character won't be dressed in the sort of skimpy outfits we saw Harley Quinn don in David Ayer's Suicide Squad.

"That’s what happens when you have a female producer, director, writer," the movie's costume designer, Erin Benach, noted before Robbie added: "Yeah, it’s definitely less male gaze–y."

With Warner Bros. skipping Comic-Con, it's hard to say when we'll get a trailer for Birds of Prey, but these remarks certainly leave us with plenty to think about.

@Jeight8 - I love me dine Margot, but they are setting this up to be blamed on hating men. Oh it didn't get good tasting because men are bad. SS saving grace was Margot's look and deadshot, and this doesn't have deadshot - looks like a mess and with aquaman and shazam being good and starting to right the ship - this movie is a canonball to portfor the dcu

@Jeight8 - I hate that we're coming to accept this man-hating agenda. So this is what happens when you give women power? They try to tear down men?

Her comments don't invoke me much confidence yet I am afraid. We need a trailer to judge better.

Okay that's fine, as long as its good and you stay true to the core of the characters do whatever you want. If you have a feminist message you want to get across, that is fine, really every movie has some kind of message its trying to get across, what determines if it is good, is how it is delivered. Just don't be in our faces about it, let the characters just be bad ass female heroes, and don't make the male characters look weak or foolish to make female heroes look better. Cause seriously when you do that, you get stuff like Ghost Busters 2016, all the men are idiots and people get annoyed with the in your face message. Look at Wonder Woman, didn't have any drama surrounding it, people loved it, and Diana was a great hero, while still giving respect to her male co stars

Idk, I feel like she could be covered in burlap and I'd still think she was hot. I'm a male and I'm still gonna gaze.

@BlackBeltJones - What? Less male gaze just means the women won't be objectified like they were under the direction of David Ayer
GhostDog
GhostDog - 6/7/2019, 3:19 AM
@tmp3 - I know what it means. Poor attempt at a joke.

But I think its possible for men to direct females and not objectify them. Like I can have a conversation with a woman and give her direct eye contact the whole time and not just leer.

Guys like Ayer just haven't figured out how to do this for some reason. Can't be that difficult.

tmp3 - 6/7/2019, 3:27 AM
@BlackBeltJones - Yeah, of course, but "Male Gaze" just refers to the objectification of women on film. It just refers to specific cases like David Ayer or Michael Bay or something, like I don't think Ridley Scott has ever used the male gaze.

@tmp3 - I'd add Brett Ratner to that list too. Aka THE RAT
