JOHN WICK Director Chad Stahelski To Direct BIRDS OF PREY Action Scenes For The DC Comics Movie

There have been rumours about Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) reshoots, and it's now been confirmed that John Wick helmer Chad Stahelski will be adding some action...

According to The Hollywood Reporter, John Wick director Chad Stahelski has been enlisted to help out on Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)

The filmmaker will reportedly oversee second unit photography and is set to work alongside current director Cathy Yan. His job will be to design and direct these additional scenes, and it's not uncommon for second unit footage to be helmed by someone else (hence why blockbusters have Second Unit Directors).

He won't be credited for his work and his company, stunt firm 87 Eleven, has actually been working on Birds of Prey from the start.

This isn't a sign that the DC Comics adaptation is in trouble; instead, it sounds like Warner Bros. simply wanted to add a little more bang to the movie and put those action scenes in the capable hands of a director like Stahelski. Now, we can look forward to Birds of Prey really impressing in terms of its action and stunts, and that's obviously no bad thing.

What do you guys think?

@knocturnalzen10 - bc without Harley they think no one would see it. They want to broadcast it to at least get her fans to turn up and somehow think this is on brand for the character and not just annoying at best

@knocturnalzen10 - Because Margot Robbie is the producer I'm guessing.

Not that I had confidence in this project before, but has WB seriously not learned their lesson yet about fixing a movie in post with a new director.

@Ha1frican - They are shooting more footage, which would be classified as production, not “post” production, which is what happens after the shooting is done.

@HarryBloodscreaming - reshoots are part of post production as they almost always occur after editing begins, that’s why things are reshot bc the movie is taking shape and they realize what works and what doesn’t. Also this officially wrapped in April so yes it is post production

@Ha1frican - I believe Marvel have used the same people in the past to assist with their action scenes.

However I'm not confident that this will be great....or even good.

This guy also direct "Second Unit" in Civil War. I didnt knew it and it was fun to find it.

That didnt mean Marvel didnt trust The Russos giving this director the second unit. Just that he understood how to do and design some stuff that the Russos didnt had the time to properly do.

The same is clearly happening here. This girl can take care of some stuff. But DC feels this guy can bring some element to the table to help her vision enhance and dont fail in the way thanks to lacking the knowledge or control to design a proper action scene/set piece.

This can happen a lot in blockbuster and more now days that almost all the big directors are indie filmmakers who have never done something so big.

I dont mind to say this movie will be good or bad. There is lately a lot of hate againts DC and Warner by [frick]ing their properties but i just think this is just normal studio behavior.

Serious question here.

Was anyone really expecting thrilling action set pieces? I thought this film was mostly gonna rely on character interactions and the different personalities between characters.

@BuzzKillington - Was anyone really expecting interesting character interactions?
When has that even happened in the DCEU?

@BuzzKillington -
In the comics, Birds of Prey is the Mission Impossible of comics. So, yeah, there should be some action.
I always knew BOP would look like a John Wick film since that whole stunt team was on the film.
But I hope Patty Jenkins isn't the only woman working these films that can direct action.
Also, I help Stahelski and his team get a DC movie of their own after this.

How come the only footage we got were the individual shots of these characters a couple months ago? Feels like they've been shooting this movie forever.
Ha1frican
Ha1frican - 8/16/2019, 1:56 PM
@Robby - Probably bc they had no plan and rushed this into development and it’s not testing well and now again they are bringing in another director under the guise of simple reshoots to retool the majority of the movie

This doesn’t strike me as *that* normal, that a successful lead director in his own right would come in following the initial production and direct newly envisioned action scenes during reshoots while going uncredited. That’s not how anyone plans a film shoot.

I'm just hoping this will cement Harley's place in Robbie's career as either 1) an abortive phase she will quickly abandon for something else or 2) her defining CBM role whether she continues it or not.

Hopefully it's the first option. She gives Harley her all, but I guess it's the makeup because it doesn't seem to be sticking to her persona the way that most CBM roles do. If this were to flop and she was to move on, she'd be viable for another franchise basically immediately. I'd love to see her in the running for the MCU Sue Storm (but she's talented and capable enough to be considered for a number of roles).

But even if it's the second option, then that's fine with me, too. If she just wants to play a trashy clown girl between Oscar bids, then that's cool. It's not up my alley, though, so I'll back off of her in the CBM context.

Oh, shit, I forgot about Suicide Squad... well, if she's in that, then my long Robbie-centric nightmare will undoubtedly continue.

@Spock0Clock - "If she just wants to play a trashy clown girl".

That's what WB/DCEU has turned her into. Harley Quinn is a psycopath with Stockholm Syndrome, not this whatever the messy trashy hippie wannabe is.

@Spock0Clock - She's producing Birds of Prey, I don't think she's gonna be playing any other superhero role outside of this one

That’s cool but if you don’t have actors like Keanu Reeves to pull off the action it’ll either look terrible or look great with stunt doubles.

Some of ya’ll might read the article before your gloom and doom predictions. It says that this was planned from the start of production. I am still not to excited about this flick yet, but facts matter.
