Ryan Coolger has been the subject of success in the past few years, emerging as one of the most prominent black directors to come onto the scene. Following Fruitvale Station the creator tackled his first franchise attempt with Creed, an empowering revitalization of the Rocky franchise. Fans hope to see the same success when his new film, Black Panther, hits theaters next month. Expected to open around $100 million, rallying fans to create a inevitable cultural phenomenon.

Speaking with Fandango the director talked about his inspirations for the film, which surprisingly, yet expectingly included James Bond.

“Yeah, definitely with James Bond. I think similar to Captain America: The Winter Soldier, we’re definitely influenced by the films of the ’70s and influenced by crime fiction.”

Coolger also adds that another film, titled A Prophet, was a looming influence as well, while also specifying which age of Bond films he was referring to.

"My favorite film is a film called A Prophet, a French film that was released almost a decade ago now, which seems a bit crazy. Any time I’m making a movie, I’m always leaning on inspiration from that one.  A Prophet deals with secret societies and cultural ties, so that was a big influence [on the film]. I also watched a lot of Coppola’s work from the ’70s. We were looking at all of that stuff and also watched a lot of the James Bond films, but not the new ones. I wanted to watch the ones that were made in the ’60s and ’70s. I watched Goldfinger for the first time, and I just thought it was really interesting in terms of how James Bond was handy.”

It's safe to say that through the influences of early Bond, Coppola, and 70s politcal thrillers, this film is going to be most similar to the tone of The Winter Soldier within the MCU. And we all know that is absolutely fantastic.

Man... Ryan knows how to say all the right things to get me even more hyped than I already have been for this movie. 007, A Prophet, and Coppola films to inspire Black Panther, my God.

And to think that all the trailers have just shown mainly the action, and that’s not even the meat of the film

You can definitely feel the James Bond influence with Shuri displaying her tech, T'Challa's cool swagger, that Korean Casino and car chase scene, and Klaw as a villain. I think everything else will be the political and family drama/thriller stuff similar to The Godfather or Game of Thrones.

@MUTO123 - Blackbolt said goodbye to Maximus, burying him in a lunar fallout shelter, Attilan collapsed, the Inhuman Royal family and a few hundred inhumans are being relocated as refugees to Earth.

Oh, and there is some looming threat from outer space (probably the return of the Kree) that pretty much only Blackbolt knows about.

But, I'm guessing it won't ultimately matter. Maybe some of the cast will return in some capacity, and potentially even plot points, but Inhumans will undoubtedly be the black sheep of Marvel TV a la Incredible Hulk to Marvel Studios.

@Spock0Clock -I'm guessing if they ever want to explain the relocation, they can just say
that Kree threat found them and they disappeared.

@KingNomarch - That's an old article. September 19. Technically the show has not been confirmed to be cancelled.

@BlackBeltJones - Or even that they rebuilt Attilan with secret help from the humans and relocated back, and without the caste system that bogged so much of the society down to begin with.

Considering how much of the show centered on going through a "second terrigenesis", I don't think it would be hard to explain a significantly altered make-up aesthetic for a second season or subsequent appearances by the main cast. (Obviously that's not the mood right now at Marvel or ABC, where it really does seem like it was just Perlmutter that wanted this series done and everyone else except for the writers just went through the motions.)

Marvel was due a black eye or two, so I don't really find any of this upsetting, but it is a shame that something that was ~75% to being legitimately good in execution just fell so flat from a flawed conception.

@Spock0Clock - I think they're going to pretend this show didn't exist more than they "pretend" TIH didn't happen.

If we ever get these characters again, it won't be for a looooooooooong time. Feige seems to have little interest in them, especially with the X-Men coming home
Spock0Clock
Spock0Clock - 1/9/2018, 2:22 PM
@BlackBeltJones - And Loeb seems most confident playing "small" and fairly gritty. Runaways is weird, and maybe New Warriors plays loose and big in its own way, but Inhumans is a difficult beat even for the comics.

The closest thing to it is Agents of SHIELD which took more or less three years to really find its footing and was already building off of a very well-established organization in the film. And in 2018, Agents is itself isn't on the most solid ground.

T'Challa is part James Bond,

part Batman,

part Lion King,

part Captain America's shield,

part actual jungle cat,

and part Spider-Man video game
