BOX OFFICE: Marvel's BLACK PANTHER Reportedly Poised For A $50-$60M Debut In China

Consider Black Panther hitting the $1 billion USD box office mark a lock as the film opens in China on Friday.  It's the last territory the film has yet to open in and will compete with the sports-romance film, Mix

According to Deadline, advance ticket sales for Black Panther are tracking ahead of Spider-Man
: Homecoming, which opened to $70+ million in China.  However, as Spidey is a more popular character than BP, "day-of" ticket purchases are expected to be smaller, resulting in a $50-$60 million opening for the film.

What do you think the final box office tally for the film will be? Black Panther currently ranks as the 5th highest grossing MCU film of all-time, just under Captain America: Civil War's $1.15 billion.

Someone said it won't make as much money in China as The Last Jedi, looks like it will do that in the opening weekend alone.

@aflynn - it might do surprising well considering Wakanda represents a wall off society that now has to deal with the rest of the world... mirroring china's past. AND the whole run by a king/emperor thing that has allegiances not only to his people but also family and the world.

@JonC - I'm really curious to see how well BP actually does there being that mainland Chinese are generally racist af.

@Zer0squad - Hi Zer0squad, the thing is that we're racist against everyone, not just blacks. Equal-opportunity racists you could say, and racist in the most casual way (unlike in the US where people take race politics so seriously and too personally). So yes, I've always joked that the Chinese are the most racist people among the various ethinicities (not just Chinese, but East Asians in general). And yes, we'll judge you if you're not either a doctor or lawyer (not a sterotype, its very very true in my family).

We Chinese will still spend money on entertaining films. Dangal (a Bollywood film) was a huge hit over here.

@Ian - Yes, I agree with everything especially it being a casual almost dismissive type of racism, the kind born of long isolationism. Definitely not the hate born type found most everywhere else. It's funny, I used to play this Chinese mobile game and was in a Chinese guild, everyone always referred to me as "the foreigner" and almost never used my gamertag. lol
