Djimon Hounsou Addresses Black Panther Rumors!

Djimon Hounsou says he was not aware of recent Black Panther movie rumors.

Movieweb had the good fortune to speak with Djimon Hounsou a couple of days ago. They took advantage of the opportunity to ask the man himself about recent Black Panther reports circulating online.

This from MOVIEWEB...

To begin with, what can you tell us about these reports that came out yesterday about you playing the Black Panther in a movie?

No, okay, so what can you tell me about the report? Because I have never heard anything about it and I am only hearing about it today. Everyone has been asking and I am a little bit floored because I don't know what is going on.

Well, there was a report out yesterday that had quoted you as saying you were interested in playing the Black Panther in a feature film and that was actually why you decided to lend your voice to the cartoon.

Ok, here it is for the record. I don't know what is going on with it. It's ... you know, this is all news to me. It is true that I have said certain things about it some time ago and that I would love to play the Black Panther. Also the opportunity came to do the voice over for the animation so I did that, maybe in the hopes that one-day they would finally get around to doing a movie. We have so many super heroes, but none that really defines the African American. I thought it could definitely happen and I have tried to push that envelope before.

Well he was a member of "The Avengers," have you talked to anyone at Marvel about appearing in that film as the Black Panther and how serious is the talk at this point?

Right. Well, that is one thing I don't know because I have to catch up with my agent at CAA and my manager to find out. I do feel that maybe the talk has to do with the The Avengers and having Black Panther appear in that. But I haven't been approached.

That very line caught my attention for the same reason Ror. It just seems to turn back in on itself if you ask me.

He could definitely pull it off, but he is getting old. If they do not make a movie in the next couple of years he will be 50 yrs old and the character is supposed to be in his early 30s at best. Unless they work his age in someway.

What about Chiwetel Ejiofor?

he'd make a great black panther, also has african roots, great dramatic acting (and classically trained too) and definitely has the agility and fighting skills the role would require (serenity, red belt etc). src="http://electricityandlust.files.wordpress.com/2008/07/redbelt.jpg" he'd="" make="" a="" great="" black="" panther,="" also="" has="" african="" roots,="" great="" dramatic="" acting="" (and="" classically="" trained="" too)="" and="" definitely="" has="" the="" agility="" and="" fighting="" skills="" the="" role="" would="" require="" (serenity,="" red="" belt="" etc).="">

This movie would be great. Too bad marvels focus is else where I'm sure plenty of African actors and African Americans would love to be apart of this project.

MOST OF THESE ACTORS HAVE NO IDEA, THEY WOULD LOVE TO DO A BIG BUDGET FILM, MOST OF THE TIME THEYRE ALL TALK AND SPECULATION AND "OH I WOULD LOVE TO BLAH BLAH BLAH...", ESPECIALLY A SUPERHERO FILM, IT MAKES YOU GOLD IN HOLLYWOOD..LOOK WHAT IT DID FOR RDJ. ACTORS HAVE NO IDEA BECAUSE HOLLYWOOD IS A FICKLE BITCH, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES DOWN TO "I HAVE MILLIONS TO PUT IN, BUT ARE YOU THE ACTOR I'LL BANK ON?, WILL YOU BE THE ONE THAT MAKES IT DOUBLE?".

There are so many great and talented black actors out there that could do this role justice. The fan support for a Black Panther movie is overwhelming. All of the forthcoming Marvel movies have generated a lot of interest in their lesser known characters. The Black Panther is a very dynamic and cool character. I'm pretty sure the African-American community and black people the world over would be stoked to see a black superhero, especially one that is such a strong person mentally and physically, and a well respected head of state and positive role model. It seems to me that this movie should be a no-brainer to Marvel Studios.

I have to say that I'm a little glad. I want Black Panther to appear in The Avengers (a mention would be fine with everything else that will surely be going on though) and his own solo movie, but this guy is sadly too old IMO. I'm sure they could find a great actor like him another role in the movie! :)

I was unaware being from wakanda made him an african-american hero. I thought that went to Luke Cage

Good. Really dont want him to be Black Panther. He is the go to guy for almost every African role. Would prefer Wale over him.
Lee..his name is spelled wrong in that poster. Its "Adewale".
Lol good point 420 Fanboy. He is not American.

He would be good, but i prefer Chiwetel Ejiofor

Someone Unknown as Young T´Challa
Djimon Hounsou as King T´Chaka / The First Black Panther
Adewale Akinnuoye Agbaje as Eric Killmonger or M´Baku aka The Man-Ape
And
Mads Mikkelsen as Ulysses Klaw

He's far too old. If they use Djimon Housou than T'Chaka will have to be in his 70s when Man-Ape/Klaw takes him out. Either than or T'Challa will have to have been wandering around the wilderness for the past 30+ years doing nothing but biding his time. Neither works. Best best is Housou as T'Chaka and a younger actor as T'Challa.

Why do we keep saying he's to old

Robert Downey Jr. is rocking it as Tony Stark and he is around Djimon's age

@ MrAnonymous

It's not that he's too old as an actor to take on a physical role, but it creates a timeline that can't hold up. If you use a 50 year old actor, then Black Panther has to be 50 in the movie when a 70+ year old T'Chaka dies. Either that or you have to create a scenario where T'Chaka died decades ago and T'Challa is JUST NOW getting around to doing something about it, as a 50 year old man. It just doesn't work. It's not about the actor's ability to do the role, it's about the role's place within the movie and the internal timeline of said movie.

@suspense - i was thinking they were going to break continuity and keep him in a separate continuum; the way they did with the BLADE treatment- but i guess we'll see

@LEEE AAA would be awesome too!! He was one of the best parts of LOST! Good actor and looks like he could rip your throat out... heck, I bet he could!! lol

AskaniSon - 12/7/2010, 6:52 PM
@BetaRayB His real life age doesn't really affect his character in the movie, considering that between make-up and CG they could easily make him look younger.

I'd prefer him for the T'Chaka to Adewale's Panther anyway, but it's certainly not implausible that he could still be the Panther.

Djimon is definitely THE perfect choice for T'Challa...around the time between his 1998 movie, Amistad, and 2000's Gladiator.

right now, i see him more as T'ChaKa...the black panther, SENIOR.

as for the prince and future king, i think both derek luke and chiwetel ejiofor make good candidates, but NOT with Hounsou as the dad.

if hounsou plays the dad, then they need to find a much younger guy...which i still don't know any, on top of my head, now. heck, why not try and go OUTSIDE the U.S. and actually find an african actor. m sure there's a couple out there capable tackling the role.

as for Andewale Akinnuoye Agbaje (mr. eko, from Lost), he should play a major BP villain.
