Jessica Chastain Asks: Where Is Scarlett Johansson's Marvel Solo Movie?

Jessica Chastain ("The Help"), spoke to The Wrap today. During that discussion the Zero Dark Thirty actress brought up Scarlett Johansson and how she deserves her own solo Marvel film.

In the past, Jessica Chastain ("Interstellar") was supposed to appear in Iron man 3 but due to a scheduling conflict she couldn't participate. She was also rumored to be up for the female lead in Ant-Man at one time and passed on that too. Now Jessica is speaking up for Marvel's most successful female actress, Scarlett Johansson. Wondering where is her solo Marvel film?

“Where is the Scarlett Johansson superhero movie? I don't understand it, why is it taking so long for this?” Chastain asked TheWrap, rhetorically and with no small degree of animation. “This woman clearly shows that people want to go see her in the movies. ‘Lucy,’ didn't it beat ‘Hercules’ by a lot opening weekend, when it was made for a lot less? She shows that she kicks ass, she's a great actress. ‘Under the Skin’ is an incredible film, and why are we still waiting for a go-ahead on a superhero movie starring Scarlett Johansson?

“To me, it's a no-brainer,” she added. “You want to make money, put Scarlett Johansson in a superhero movie!”

I think Jessica brings up a fair point. Let's just look at Lucy, the science-fiction film directed by Luc Besson. It opened against another male superhero-like film, Paramount's Hercules and bested it by about $15M more. Girl power!

If Marvel took note of that box office performance it could be sooner than later Game of Thrones' director Neil Marshall will get a call from Marvel giving him the green light on a solo Black Widow film.

Well, unfortunately Marvel Studios pride their success on long term goals and certain directions, but f*ck that, right? Let's just please all of the fans in the name of strong morality.

Well, to be fair, BW has been in more movies than Hawkeye. BW hasn't really had a big role. I'd rather have Captain Marvel get a solo movie. A SHIELD movie would be better, in my opinion.

Honestly Black Widow in the movies works better as a supporting character, I'd rather see Ms Marvel get a solo movie

My pitch for a SHIELD movie would have Hawkeye and BW as the stars, with Coulson, Nick and Maria as supporting roles. Villains could be HYDRA or AIM or Modok or something. Though, honestly, I'd rather have all these characters in supporting roles in Cap movies and Avengers movies and AoS.

Wasn't Chastain supposed to be in Iron Man 3?

And, I like Black Widow but Marvel has so many other characters and stories to focus on right now.... I don't think we need a Black Widow solo movie, I think a Ms Marvel movie would be awesome though

Pre-SHIELD and no Coulson... I'd go see it. Maybe a two-eyes Fury?

We're not getting a Black Widow movie before Ms. Marvel.

I'd rather have a Ms Marvel/Captain Marvel solo film before Black Widow. I feel that she's had enough exposure and that Ms Marvel would help expand the MCU even more since her origins are linked with the Kree. I'm open for a Black Widow film, but if Marvels goal is to expand the MCU then Ms Marvel is the way to go.

A Ms Marvel solo film would help expand the MCU and would be Marvels answer to a heroine film. It's killing two birds with one stone!

I rather see a Carol Danvers led film than a Black Widow film. I've always seen her as a supporting character, and I think she should stick to roles like she had in The Winter Soldier.

There really are no excuses for all these studios to pass on a female-led comic book movie.

I don't think Black Widow could carry a solo movie. Partially because Johansson's acting isn't as good as it's made out to be, but she's not bad.

If there wasn't a S.H.I.E.L.D. TV show out already, an S.H.I.E.L.D. film with the likes of Fury, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Coulson, etc. that's in the same vein/tone as The Winter Soldier could have been very interesting.

"There really are no excuses for all these studios to pass on a female-led comic book movie."

THIS. I don't care if it's Black Widow, Captain Marvel, or Squirrel Girl. It's WAY past time for a comic book movie with a strong female character in the lead. Figure it out, Marvel. And sooner, rather than later.

Are people seriously that interested in a Black Widow movie?? Give her a television series or even a Netflix series but honestly if it doesn't push the MCU forward there's no use of it at this point. Why go all the way back for a "prequel" about Widow's dark past!? In that case they might as well make a Hawkeye film as well. They're both secondary characters, (to me) they don't support enough girth to carry their own films. I just don't know...but it's really not going to make or break the MCU.

Fair point. I'd actually like to see a Black Widow film. Perhaps instead of a pre-sequel though just have flashbacks to explain what happened in Budapest?

Marvel Studios is clearly machist.

They have only done male lead movies, and the only female avenger in 6 year has been Black Widow. Thats an embarrassment.

Where are all the great super heroines Marvel? Where is the first female solo movie?

Everyone keep asking about Ms Marvel, but all they do is talk and not do it. It probably wont come until 2020, wouldnt be surprised.

Marvel should support a female solo movie, and they are taking way too much time, when they have the money and the audience support.

Black Widow is more interesting than Green Lantern.
