BLACK ADAM: Dwayne Johnson Explains Why He Ditched The Padding From His Superhero Costume

We're used to seeing padding in superhero costumes, and while it's often hidden well, there are occasions where it sticks out like a sore thumb. A good example of that would be 2019's Shazam!, and Zachary Levi's blown up physique was widely criticised and made fun of online prior to his DCEU debut.

The actor got into amazing shape to play the superhero, so hiding that beneath an overly padded costume was an odd creative decision. Luckily, set photos for Shazam! Fury of the Gods have confirmed that's not a mistake Warner Bros. plans to repeat with the sequel. As for Black Adam, it's no secret that Dwayne Johnson didn't need padding, but an earlier iteration of the suit still included it.

Talking to promote his new movie Jungle Cruise, the actor explained that his costume had to be redesigned after he donned a "terrible" version with "fake padding" lining the inside.

"I wanted to come in in the best shape of my life. I wanted to raise the bar. When we first - and I sent [Emily Blunt] pictures - it was funny when we first tried on the first costume that they had made for me. It was padded," Johnson explained. "Like all the superhero costumes are padded. But when you have padding, it actually takes away from your real body so all this went away."

"It had this fake padding. It looked so terrible," he admitted. "So we removed all the padding, redesigned the costume." The end result still hasn't been revealed, but it's clear Johnson gave his all to Black Adam, right down to what the anti-hero will wear when we see him make his big screen debut.

Why the hell would he need it?

@Shroombeast - it's not as much about the volume I think as it is about the definition. If you take the most ripped bodybuilder and put him in the thinnest, tightest, stretchiest shirt, the separations between the muscles would still be barely visible.
I'm still not sure how that's going to work out in this case but we'll see.

@Fares - they can fix it with shading. They will literally paint the definition back into the costume.

@BackwardGalaxy - I don't know if that will be enough to do the trick

Hopefully he plays the role straight and doesnt add in his usually goofiness.

He has done it before, while now Hobbs is just The Rock in a costume. In Fast Five he played it straight

He's not wrong. Some look ok, others vary.

The best of the bunch is probably Aquaman's V2. It came out nicely with minimal padding.

The 2 worst? Obviously Shazam's was horrible. Glad it got a rework. Hoechlin's is overstuffed and has a very noticeable gap in the crease between his delts and pecs that shows horribly on S&L. It just ekes out Fatfleck's, which is a shame because he put in some work. Well his upper body anyway.

Yeah, I think that goes without saying.

Did they not know who they were casting? Who's the intern who checked the "padding required" box?

He should take shots at the first Shazam using padding to make things more interesting. Roast Levi for needing padding and proclaiming to be the true champion to Shazam.

He doesn't need the pad. The pad needs him.

It’s weird because he’s extremely jacked up and obviously needs no padding but I don’t find his physique or him attractive.
Maybe it’s just him lol

God all this talk about himself is giving me the Boak, i'm the hyeriachery here in the universe etc gaining all this muscle to show off he needs no padding.

its really turning me off this movie , at the end of the day if the movie is ..... then no muscles and talking smack is going to make the movie any better. and you can kiss your take of of the dc universe goodbye.

personally I didn't find Shazam that big of a deal even though I love the characters abilities etc I have only seen it once.

At the end of the day I think we can all agree that it's not the Rock's suit that's going to make or break this movie.
So far, aside from WB execs, the weakest link has been the director. And I won't allow myself to get too excited for this movie until I see something reassuring.
