Black Panther has been in theaters for only a matter of days but it's already closing in on the $400 million mark worldwide. With $169 million overseas, Marvel's latest movie has had a startling debut which has left the jaws of box office analysts everywhere on the floor. Originally set for a $100 million four-day debut, the Ryan Coogler helmed release has, in fact, scored a projected $218 million.
That gives Black Panther a current total of $387 million globally and with a record-shattering $192 million three day haul, it's had both the fifth highest domestic opening of all-time and is the second biggest superhero movie in history (in terms of its opening weekend) behind only The Avengers.
It is still possible that the Marvel movie could top The Avengers' four-day gross of $226.3 million but we'll have to wait and see on that front as the number above could rise if business picks up today and tomorrow. For those of you who care about this sort of thing, 37% of ticket buyers were African-American, 35% were Caucasians, and 18% were Hispanics. Most superhero movies score an African-American audience of around 15% so that's obviously played a big role in this opening weekend haul.
Black Panther cost around $200 million to produce but it's clearly going to make Marvel that money back and then some. Have you watched the movie yet? Be sure to let us know your thoughts below.
