Disney Submits BLACK PANTHER For All Awards Categories, Including Best Picture And Best Director

The Oscars may have already ditched that new "Popular" category but Disney and Marvel Studios clearly aren't going to shy away from giving Black Panther a serious awards push moving into next year...

Black Panther was a cultural phenomenon, a box office hit, and a critical darling so what about that makes it ineligible to be considered for some key categories at next year's Academy Awards? The fact it has a superhero in it, of course! Regardless, Disney isn't shying away from giving it a push as they've launched a "For Your Consideration" page putting the movie forward for, well, pretty much everything!

A "Best Picture" nomination does feel like it's deserved because Black Panther is up there with The Dark Knight and it's made a bigger impact than any of the other Oscar favourites probably ever will.

Unfortunately, the Academy and most other awards bodies still don't give comic book adaptations their due so it's unlikely T'Challa's first solo outing will get much attention next year. We could be surprised, though, so we'll have to wait and see! What do you guys think? Share your thoughts down below.

Doubt it'll get that many noms. Hoping for the best, expecting the worst.

I'm not too bothered about either result anyway. There's gonna be the "It deserves a nomination and Oscars are racist!" crowd if it doesn't get nominated, and the "It's a generic superhero film and Infinity War is better!"/"The Oscars are pandering to the left!" crowd if it does. I'd rather not belong to either side.

I personally this film and think it's great. I think prior to today I've been a bit overly defensive of it. At this point if there are people who think it's the worst thing ever I can't convince them otherwise, whether the criticisms are good ones or not. People are gonna like what they like.

I don’t think much will come out from this but one will never know until you try it out.

Solid movie but Oscar worthy? I dont think so.
Good Luck though.

@minusman - out of the movies out so fare yes.

@DR3D - Are you saying that Black Panther is Oscar worthy when compared to all the other movies released this year?
Pantherpool
Pantherpool - 9/12/2018, 3:11 AM
@minusman - Let's let the members of the Academy decide what is and what isn't Oscar worthy.
After all, it's their decision.
DR3D
DR3D - 9/12/2018, 3:12 AM
@minusman - yes, andI would find it hard to pick 9 movies at this point.

Caveat I haven’t watched any of the Oscar bait films from TFF, like First Man and Beautiful Boy.

@Pantherpool - Well, obviously, my comment was just my opinion and if the Academy decides it is Oscar worthy, then more power to BP and its cast but I just dont think Black Panther measures up in most of the categories.

@DR3D - Thanks for the clarification. I have no idea what other films have been submitted to the Academy for Oscar nominations so perhaps you are right.

@DR3D - We've had incredible films like Searching, Hereditary, Annihilation, First Reformed and a Quiet Place. Not to mention the ones not already out like First Man, A Star is Born, Beautiful Boy ect.

At the very most Black Panther could nab nominations in Costume Design, Supporting Actor, Original Song, maybe script? It's my favourite Marvel Script thus far but I still don't think it's up there with a lot of the other films this year.

@minusman - Oh, I understand that it's your opinion, I'm just saying that it doesn't deem whether it is an Oscar worthy film or not.

@FilmStudent - I haven't seen all of those but I can see A Quiet Place and Annihilation. Those were great and I really liked those films.

@Pantherpool - Neither does yours.
Like you, I simply voiced my opinion. You think BP is Oscar worthy. I dont. Simple. No need to get so upset and defensive.

It deserves at least a nomination for best costume design
Pantherpool

Production and costume design, score and song are pretty much guaranteed. Sound mixing and editing are not unlikely, just like makeup & hairstyling.
It has a shot at Best Picture nom too.

If it doesn't win anything, the film made enough money for Marvel to create Oscar statues if they want to.

@Pantherpool - not a chance it gets a best picture nom. Maybe best adapted screenplay though. Production design, Hair and makeup, costume design, visual effects, and best original songs are all more likely nominations they could land.

We live in a world where 'Suicide Squad' won an Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling ... Anything is possible.

Yeah, maybe costume design

@BillyBatson1000 - well killer crocs makeup was amazing

BillyBatson1000 - 9/12/2018, 3:42 AM
@ClungePool - Agreed, Croc's makeup was good. I just meant that if THAT film can get an Oscar for anything - Black Panther has a strong chance of some critical award.
BillyBatson1000
BillyBatson1000 - 9/12/2018, 3:43 AM
@ALF9001 - It's possible - only (some) of the CGI let it down for me.
Spock0Clock
Spock0Clock - 9/12/2018, 3:45 AM
@ClungePool - It's sad that in the context of 2016 Hollywood that people would think that. It feels like all the real SFX artistry is on TV, and most of that goes into making [frick]ing zombies.
