BLADE: Rumored Director Elegance Bratton Reveals How He Would Approach Upcoming Marvel Studios Reboot

Following rumours that he's being lined up to direct Blade for Marvel Studios, filmmaker Elegance Bratton has weighed in with his take on how he would approach bringing the Daywalker to the big screen.

Around six months before the world closed down thanks to the pandemic, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige wrapped up an epic Hall H panel at the San Diego Comic-Con with one final, jaw-dropping announcement.

Joined by Oscar-winning actor Mahershala Ali, he revealed that a Blade movie was finally on the way, and over three years later...we're still waiting for it to become a reality.

We did hear the Daywalker's voice in Eternals' post-credits scene, but director Bassam Tariq parting ways with Marvel Studios in September has only served to further delay the movie. There have since been reports that the script needed some work, with Ali giving some input as Moon Knight and X-Men '97 scribe Beau DeMayo gets to work on punching it up.

Last month, we heard that Elegance Bratton may be among those being eyed to helm Blade. He's something of a newcomer, but began his career in the 2010s, writing, directing, and producing a variety of projects including the short film Walk for Me, the reality television series My House, and the documentary Pier Kids. His feature debut, meanwhile, will be A24's The Inspection.

Talking to Screen Rant, Bratton was asked how he would approach a project like Blade

"I’m very much interested in a contemplative and thoughtful camera approach when it comes to filming Black actors. I think a lot of times we observe and dissect difference in cinema rather than spend time," the filmmaker explained. "So, I think I would want to kind of spend that time to bring Blade into a more recognizably human place."

"Secondarily Blade’s story is very much my story. This is a young Black man, abandoned by his mom and I would really want to explore that. And I guess the last thing is Blade, as a Black man, if you go to a barber shop the conspiracy theories around Whiteness, Blackness, immortality all sorts of things are kind of swirling around."

"So, in that kind of Marvel-esque humor, I would want to bring some of that barber shop humor into it...I think Blade kind of as a mythological character exists in a lot of different parts of the American consciousness that I would love to poke around in and provoke with."

"But ultimately, it’s an action movie. It’s fun," Bratton concluded. "Vampires are sexy and fun and I want to make a really fun action film. And the fact that Mahershala is playing Blade, he's one of the best actors on God’s green Earth, and I like working with great actors."

Reading these comments, we can't help but hope the director does get to take a shot at Blade. It sounds like he has a really interesting approach to the character, and it's clearly a movie Bratton has devoted a lot of thought to. That alone makes us think he's probably spoken to Marvel Studios recently.

Blade is currently set to be released in theaters on September 6, 2024.

I hope they don't butcher the violence like they did with Moon Knight. Of course the gimmick is somewhat fine because of the split personalities. What's going to be the excuse for a blade wielding day walker, going against blood sucking vampires lol

@bobevanz - They are going to ruin this movie. I really hope they don't, but there are reports that the original version was a period piece, Blade was going to have a daughter, and the movie was going to be a passing of the torch film with Blade's daughter becoming the "new Blade".

Ali is supposedly mad about the original story and is close to walking. They already lost the first director.

It just doesn't sound good, at all. Hopefully they take a new approach, because I for one don't want to see Blade handing over the mantle to his daughter.

@CorndogBurglar - I usually have faith with marvel but after moon knight I rather they don’t touch the darker characters.

@Taonrey - Yeah, Moon Knight was a disappointment for me.

I just don't get the thought of making a Blade movie and having his first appearance being a "passing the torch" film. Seems like a bad way to handle a fan favorite character.

@bobevanz - With a character eho fights supernatural creatures, it's very easy to "cheat" by going more stylized direction with the violence (for example, why should vampires bleed red?).

@CorndogBurglar - Passing of the torch? 3/4 of the users on this site will except it and see nothing wrong with it.

@CorndogBurglar - definitely since they've been beating that horse throughout all of phase 4.

Not quite sure this Director actually understands the character of Blade. It's not so much that his Mother abandoned him, as she was taken away from him when she unfortunately got involved with a Vamp. Something he definitely understands at this point. Anyway, as long as they can stick to the action found in Blade I and II, the less said about III the better, I'm good. A nice coherent story would be nice as well.

@Mugens - I thought the same thing! Using the word "abandoned" was a weird choice. I don't think anyone would rationally accuse their mother of abandoning if she dies during child birth. It isn't abandoning a child if a parent dies when the kid is at a young age.

Kind of a weird take.

Lol it doesnt matter how he’ll approach it, the producers already have what they want in mind. He’s just a lacky. Someone should tell him

@Matchesz - there’ll be a strong independent female character stronger than blade, someone will make a witty quip after something terrible happens, 1 minute long final fight on some sound stage, etc

@Matchesz - There are already reports that Blade will have a daughter and the film will include Blade passing the torch to her.

Sort of sounds like a mixing of the original Blade movie and the Luke Cage series?

It would be interesting to see how that might work as it would almost require Blade to have 2 different personalities during the day and night.

Not guna lie, not loving what i'm hearing about the whole "mom abandoning" thing and the "barber shop comedy" aspect. I don't think this guy gets Blade at all. Please get someone who knows the character better. Hell... bring back the guy that did Blade 1, who did a pretty good job at the time... idk... i was wicked excited for this movie...now im very skeptical

Of FFS. Really?!

“Blade’s story is very much my story. As a Black Man who, incidentally, is British, a half vampire/half human hybrid whose mother (who was Black) died giving birth to him after being attacked by a vampire, is verging on immortal, hunts vampires and other monsters in a brutal fashion using a variety of weaponry aided by some close allies, I can really relate to his character. Oh, and did I mention he’s Black? I’m gonna really concentrate on that, because that’s what sets him apart in the MCU.”

NEXT!!!

I don't know if I view Blade the same way he does. I never really saw Blade as a "Black character", not like Luke Cage. Blade could've been any unfortunate soul, regardless of his background, at least as far as I understand the typical interpretation of the character.

But hey, I'm all about reinterpretation, bringing new stuff to the table. "Typical" doesn't need to be the go-to thing. If he can deliver a great movie, I ain't gonna complain.

I think about my whiteness all the time, I hope there will be a film that will explore that for me. It would be a big help.

I would just do a period piece that takes place in 1973, when Blade debuted and he's cross-treking around Europe looking for Dracula.

They've set up enough young avengers, they need to start setting up their villains or at least some long term villains.

Keep this man away. Blade knows he wasn't abandoned. His mom was taken...that's his fuel.

We just need a bad ass Blade movie. No heavy social commentary...no director trying to remedy themselves through the movie. JUST A BADASS BLADE. John wick style with vampires.
