5 Awesome Storylines Most Likely To Be Adapted For CAPTAIN AMERICA 4
Independence Day has left us in a patriotic mood here at CBM, and while it's likely still quite a few years away, here we look at the most likely comic book storylines which will be adapted in Captain America 4...
There's no room for a fourth Captain America movie in Phase 3, and while Chris Evans' star spangled superhero will no doubt appear here and there before making his return in Avengers: Infinity War, a fourth instalment of that franchise is no doubt being saved for Phase 4. Of course, we're literally years away from any sort of announcement in regards to that slate, so every character's future is uncertain.
However, when Captain America 4 does inevitably become a reality, what storyline should it adapt? Before announcing Civil War, Kevin Feige trolled us with a "Serpent Society" subtitle, but there are still lots of other better possibilities than that. What you'll find here then are the five greatest (and possibly unexpected) Captain America storylines which most deserve - and are most likely - to be adapted.
5. War & Remembrance
A relatively brief story, this would have to serve as just the basis for the next Captain America movie, but the potential for something special here should be clear. Written by Roger Stern with artwork by John Byrne, the duo's nine issue run took silly villains like Batroc the Leaper, Mister Hyde, and Baron Blood and elevated them to A-List status, but it was Cap decapitating the latter with his shield which remains the image which "War & Remembrance" is perhaps best remembered for.
However, there's another element - from the title's 250th issue - that may very well be the thing that Marvel should actually consider borrowing for the hero's next big screen adventure. That featured Steve Rogers contemplating a Presidential run, and just as America needed someone like Captain America to step up and save the country then, the same could be said for how things are today. Chris Evans' Cap battling to become the President while still trying to serve as an Avenger could be a lot of fun, especially if he ends up winning and passes on the mantle.
4. Under Siege
More of an Avengers story than a Captain America one, "Under Siege" featured Baron Zemo and his Masters of Evil storming Avengers Mansion in order to take out Earth's Mightiest Heroes where they live. With such a powerful team behind him, Zemo effortless dispatched of many of the Avengers (in brutal fashion), while he would then spitefully destroy every single memento Steve Rogers had from his World War II life, leaving him with not so much as a single photo of his friends and family from his childhood.
With Captain America: Civil War leaving the door open for Zemo to return, this story could work perfectly on the big screen after Avengers: Infinity War, and may very well lead to the return of some old faces (Abomination for example) and the debuts of many new ones. A story like this feels a little too small for an Avengers movie - especially after they battle Thanos - so making it a more personal fight between Steve and Zemo which also incorporates members of his team would definitely be the right call here.
3. Dimension Z
There was a lot about Dimension Z which didn't work, but the next Captain America going full on sci-fi by placing Steve Rogers in a bizarre alternate world created by Arnim Zola could be great fun. Once again stranded in a world he doesn't recognise and a man out of time, Steve fights for survival against monsters created by Zola and ends up raising one of the villain's human clones as his son.
Providing Marvel could make this feel different to the cosmic worlds we see in upcoming releases like Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2, Thor: Ragnarok, and Avengers: Infinity War, this could very well be their most unique movie yet and it's actually about time that Zola steps up as a villain following his memorable appearance in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Cap's supporting cast could still factor into this one as we see them attempting to rescue their friend on Earth, but seeing a bearded Steve kicking alien ass would be the real draw here. Keeping the comic's (written by Rick Remember and pencilled by John Romita Jr.) ending would be smart too.
2. 1950s Captain America
The 1950s Captain America has appeared in a number of comic books, so there isn't really one storyline to highlight here, but that gives Marvel the opportunity to pick the best bits from many of them. While Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely have previously laughed off the possibility of bringing this insane Captain America to life on the big screen, there's no denying that the opportunity exists for a good story which could delve into the government's attempts to create a new Cap who then goes mad.
Hell, assuming Steve is still a fugitive after the events of Avengers: Infinity War, they could try and unleash a new Captain America in the present only for it to go horribly wrong and for the real deal to have to step in and put him down. This is something which would definitely need to be fleshed out in order to work, but throw in a couple of new villains and supporting characters like Agent 13 and Bucky, and we could have a great back to basics Cap movie which scales things back a little after the game changing Civil War.
1. The Death Of Captain America
If Captain America is going to die, I would imagine that it will be at the hands of Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War when Steve Rogers once again wields the shield (and Chris Evans' contract comes to an end). Regardless of whether it happens there or in Captain America 4 though, the hero meeting his maker and passing on the mantle feels inevitable, and that's why this story should be high on Marvel's list.
The Falcon becoming Captain America could work - especially as Anthony Mackie is so damn charismatic - but exploring Bucky's path to redemption by taking over for his fallen comrade would be far more interesting, something which Ed Brubaker proved a few years back. Sebastian Stan has become so well liked that it's easy enough to picture fans embracing him as the new Captain America, and Marvel could very well have a whole new trilogy on their hands here. Hell, perhaps they could even talk Evans into returning at some point, but a loose adaptation of this story would be a great way to start off Captain America 4...
