Chris Evans first played Steve Rogers in 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger and later bid farewell to the Star Spangled superhero in 2019's Avengers: Endgame.
Since then, Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson has become the MCU's new Captain America, and his story will continue in New World Order next year. As for Steve, we still don't know what became of him, though the Multiverse opens the door to all sorts of storytelling possibilities, including Evans' potential return as Cap in movies like The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars.
During an interview on Good Morning America to talk Ghosted, Evans was asked about possibly playing the hero again.
"Oh man, you know, as much as I would love to...that was such a special time in my life," the actor says in the video below. "I’m very precious with the character, That’s the problem. I’m so protective of it."
"To come back, it would have to be for the right reasons, right timing. It feels a little too soon," Evans continued. "Anthony Mackie is Captain America right now. There are other stories to tell. For now, we ended on such a good note. I would be too worried about tarnishing [it]."
While rumours have swirled about the manner in which he'll return as Steve (including a "Nomad" TV series and a project exploring the hero's trip through time with the Infinity Stones), we're guessing something concrete has been agreed on.
What that will be remains to be seen, of course. Having him take centre stage in one of the upcoming Avengers movies makes the most sense, though whether that would be a Variant or the older version of the hero is hard to say. It feels like Marvel Studios has been deliberately evasive when it comes to confirming his fate one way or the other, anyway.
