The Falcon and The Winter Soldier spent five episodes exploring Sam Wilson's decision to wield the shield, but it wasn't until the finale that we saw him become Captain America. Shortly after that episode aired, it was revealed that Marvel Studios is moving forward with a Captain America 4, though little to nothing has been revealed about what we can expect from the movie.
Sam promises to be a very different Cap to Steve Rogers, especially as he doesn't have the Super Soldier Serum coursing through his veins. He's just a regular guy (with a pair of wings), and it sounds like the plan is to explore this by upping the ante and stacking the odds against the hero.
"I think, he's not Steve Rogers and I think that's a good thing. Because to me, this new Cap is Rocky," producer Nate Moore tells ComicBook.com. "He's going to be the underdog in any situation. He's not a super soldier. He's not a hundred years old. He doesn't have the Avengers. What happens with this guy who announces publicly kind of, without the support, 'I'm new Captain America.' What happens next? I think is fascinating because he's a guy. He's a guy with wings and a shield, but he is a guy."
"So, we're going to put him through the wringer and make him earn it, and see what happens when he is outweighed, outclassed, out-everything," he teases. "What makes somebody Captain America? I'm going to argue it's not being a super soldier. And I think we're going to prove that with Mackie and Sam Wilson."
It remains to be seen what those odds are, but something tells us Cap will have to face more than just Power Broker. Karli Morgenthau, a.k.a. Flag Smasher, was a pretty underwhelming villain in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, so we're hoping for someone a little more interesting and formidable.
Captain America 4 has yet to receive a release date from Marvel Studios.
