Russos Clarify 67 Characters In AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Comment And Talk 'Spider-Man'

As expected, people really did take Joe and Anthony Russo's comments about there being 67 characters in Infinity War a little too literally, and as well as clarifying that and further teasing that epic two parter, the filmmakers also weigh in on Captain America: Civil War...

Even though we've yet to see so much as a single official image of the wall-crawler in Captain America: Civil War, him joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe is by far one of the most excting things about the movie. Joe and Anthony Russo actually took part in a Q&A after a special screening of The Winter Soldier last night, and Collider quoted them as saying the following about bringing Spider-Man into this world. It definitely sounds like his role in this first Phase 3 release will be a significant one anyway, especially as they clearly wanted Peter Parker in it from the start.

"It was a very long process. Kind of thing we had to lobby for for months. What happens during a long process like that, you’re continuing to develop the movie and the character. During the time that it takes you to convince the powers that be to make the jump and let you do that, you’ve engrained the character so deeply into the story at that point that you’d have to destroy the story to take him out. So, by the time we found out that he’d be in the movie, it wasn’t so much elation than like ‘Thank God! We don’t have to blow the whole movie up.'"

"I’m a comic book fan and collector, since I was a kid, and he’s my favorite character. And to get a chance to reinvent that character…For me, I really wanted to see somebody cast who was very close to a high schooler’s age…What was so valuable to me about the character, when I was a kid, is that he’s a high schooler with this power and responsibility, and it makes him very distinct as a hero. It makes him distinct from the other characters in the Marvel Universe, who are confident, experienced superheroes. It’s super important to have that color of the movie, and we felt that it was invaluable and we do think it goes a long way. That character helps us balance out the tone of the movie."

As for their widely reported comments about there being as many as 67 characters in Avengers: Infinity War, The Russos clarified that fans took that figure a little too literally, but were quick to point out that the two-part movie is still going to be huge with a lot of characters factoring into this finale. They also offered some insight into just how large a production it's expected to be:

"We were being figurative when we said [67 characters] and people took it as literal but there’s a lot of characters. Infinity War is meant to be the culmination of the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe up to that point. It’s very ambitious in its scope, it wants to take everythign that you’ve seen before and coalesce into some kinda of climactic ending. It’s complicated , ambitious storytelling…We’re not talking about lead characters, just people that make an appearance."

"We start shooting both of them later this year in November and we’re primarily going to be based in Atlanta again. That’s where we’ll do out stage work and some exteriors. There will be locations from around the world involved as well. We actually relocate to Atlanta in late July to finish up pre-production there. We don’t come back to L.A. until the following June."

"We’re shooting them concurrently, meaning that some days we’ll be shooting the first movie and some days we’ll be shooting the second movie. Just jumping back and forth. We won’t look like this next year."

So with Guardians starting filming next month, Thor Ragnarok and Spider-Man both in July and Infinity War 1 & 2 in November, we'll propably have tons of new characters cast this year. I wonder if Captain Marvel will be a part of Infinity War (which films before her movie, even though Part 2 will be released after).

Thanks Russos anyone with half a brain could understand that there weren't 67 main characters. Yet it needed to be said because some people on this site took it as literal fact that there were 67 main characters.

Since Infinity Wars really is filming this year, should we expect casting announcements for Captain Marvel/Inhumans/other new characters I'm forgetting about?

OTHERS COMMENTS IN THIS INTERVIEW:

OBOUT CAPTAIN AMERICA - CIVIL WAR:

“This has been the easiest post process we’ve ever had on a film. We’re very happy with how the movie was. Everyone is very happy with where the movie was. For us, the tricky thing is the effects because it’s a very complicated movie and there are some really big sequences in the film. The effects are on a much larger scale than the work we did on Winter Soldier. That’s the part that becomes really difficult because you don’t have a lot of time and everyone has very high standards. So everyone starts killing themselves at this point. We’re finishing up the music – Henry Jackman is back to score and we’re really happy with the score. He leaves for London in two weeks and we do a few reshoots next week…we’ll be done with the movie in 2 and a half months.”

ABOUT AVENGERS - INFINITY WAR SCRIPT:

“We have two excellent outlines from Markus and McFeely. They just went off and started writing the first draft of the first movie.”

Beyond that, they confirmed that they will be shooting the entire Infinity War on IMAX cameras, and that they will be working with their regular DP, Trent Opaloch, on both films. And when asked about appearances by any of the Marvel characters from Netflix’s series, they simply said that “anything is possible in Marvel,”

I remember early on there were whispers from the cast and crew that the movie really feels incredible, and they just felt like they had something really special on their hands. The fact that the Russo's say this is their smoothest film yet(when honestly it should be the hardest) and they had made 'You, Me, and Dupree' I think this is providing some evidence to that statement. Just, like, the film clicked in all the places it should've and just the overall experience not only measured up to what they wanted, but exceeded it. At least that's what I'm getting from this. But yeah, anyone who ACTUALLY thought there would be 67 characters is dumber than.....well...I don't know, I guess a really dumb person. But point is, they could take EVERY SINGLE SUPERHERO now and upcoming and I don't even think it would equal half that many, and I'm including characters that are dead, too.

HiFi
HiFi - 1/14/2016, 8:41 AM
Didn't Feige say that the next time we'll see Thanos, he'll actually be doing stuff and that's gonna be before Infinity War?

Gunn already said there's no Thanos in Guardian, and Spider-Man should be ruled out as well. That leaves Thor Ragnarok and Panther.
