CAPTAIN AMERICA EXCLUSIVE: Joe Johnston - Another Question/Another Answer

CAPTAIN AMERICA EXCLUSIVE: Joe Johnston - Another Question/Another Answer

Although director Joe Johnston is in the midst of post-production on Captain America, he and CBM editor Ed Gross continue their interview sessions with this quickie that addresses what Cap stands for.

SCIFI MEDIA ZONE: In this film we're going to see Captain America in two VERY different eras. Given the changes in society since World War II, do you think he stands for something different in today's world than he might have back then?

JOE JOHNSTON: I think Captain America stands for exactly the same things he stood for then...he's just standing against different enemies. Steve Rogers says it best. "I don't like bullies, I don't care where they're from". Cap is about justice, and not specifically justice as defined by an American perspective. He's 100% American but he can see past the flag when he needs to. He also has no problem breaking the rules to make the right thing happen.

This sounds good, but what is "justice as defined by an American perspective"? Justice is justice. Does he mean when a particular part of American government wants to take an action that is in fact unjust? I can understand that, but that's not how I'd say it.

It seems like he's bashing the USA with some of his comments, not just this article but others as well. I wonder if that has something to do with the star on Cap's chest being partially covered up. Hmm...I'll look past it and hope this movie kicks ass, which it looks like it will.

WTF is he talking about??? "...justice as defined by an American perspective."

What does that mean? Justice is justice. This guy continues to upset me with his obvious "agenda." Just make a movie about a Cap who embodies the core values of the U.S.A. - DEMOCRACY, EQUALITY, and FREEDOM. Yes, we are not perfect, but what we stand for - what the U.S. Constitution stands for - will never change; that is constant.

Why can't this guy just make a movie that celebrates what is good about the U.S? I'm getting sick and tired about reading about how Cap is more of a "United Nations" Captain American. WTF has the U.N. accomplished? Nothing.

...and what does "see past the flag" mean. The flag is pure. It stands for nothing that is wrong. It's the policy makers in Washington he has beef with. Not the flag. Leave the flag alone.

@ leee777

slj will probably be in the modern day scenes only, even though nick fury(white) was about in world war 2 hence sgt fury & his howling commando's.

also if i remember rightly i think nick fury took the super solider serum to slow up his ageing process.

its not the end of the world if he is in the world war 2 scenes.

I don't think its that Cap sees past the flag rather that he upholds what it stands for against even the government. Either way Johnson seems to get it.

What?! I've been looking forward to a big screen Captain America movie for a long time but I will NOT be watching this one, thanks to that jacka$$ of a director.

Captain America is the living, breathing, fighting symbol of the American flag. That's the whole point of his existence. His justice is American justice and from the American perspective. He upholds what's really good about America: life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Joe Johnston is talking out of his a$$. What nonsenses!
