Joe Johnston and Marvel's comic book adaptation Captain America: The First Avenger was released on DVD and Blu-Ray on October 25, and according to Phillyburbs.com, after only two days, film managed to take the #1 spot on DVD/Blu-Ray chart, previously held by Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, fourth installment in the popular franchise. Captain America: The First Avenger was also first on the rental chart.

DVD/Blu-Ray Chart:

1. CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER

2. PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES

3. FAST FIVE

4. WINNIE THE POOH

5. GREEN LANTERN

Captain America: The First Avenger is another CBM that was in release for only two days, but still took the first place on the chart. Matthew Vaughn's X-Men: First Class did the same back in September.

"Captain America: The First Avenger" focuses on the early days of the Marvel Universe when Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) volunteers to participate in an experimental program that turns him into the Super Soldier known as Captain America. As Captain America, Rogers joins forces with Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) and Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) to wage war on the evil HYDRA organization, led by the villainous Red Skull (Hugo Weaving.)

These movies always come out at #1 because of the established fanbase that will rush out to buy it.

The real test is to see what the overall sales will be like at the end of the year.

I liked Cap a lot, but I though Red Skull was a pretty weak antagonist. Loki on the other hand...........
marvel72
marvel72 - 10/28/2011, 3:11 PM
captain america was a better overall film, thor was very good but the scenes on earth were pretty average apart from thor vs the destroyer & stan lee's cameo which were good.

Best comicbook movie of 2011?? no by a long shot. X-Men: First Class FTW!

Supes17 - 10/28/2011, 3:23 PM
@marvel72:
You have a point with the Earth scenes. I though it was very unlikely that a character's morality can change overnight and that he vould fall in love with Jane by helping her with dishes. But Thor had a more epic feel. The frost giant battle was epic
marvel72
marvel72 - 10/28/2011, 3:33 PM
@ supes17

the frost giant battle was the best scene of the movie shame it was roughly within the first twenty minutes of the film starting & thor vs loki was good but again could of been better.

as for the falling in love scenes it was more like lust for each other, the romance in captain america was handled better.

i would give them both 4/5 but i think cap is slighty better even though thor is in my top three favorite characters.
Bodwulf
Bodwulf - 10/28/2011, 3:37 PM
@supes17 If you thought your father was dead, and you had started a war with another country, and you were not allow to return to your house, and you lost your job, your morality might change as well overnite. Some critic threw that out there that just falling for Jane did all that. It was hitting rock bottom that caused the change.

capcyclopsftw - 10/28/2011, 3:40 PM
Thor was not even close to the quality of CA:TFA. Thor really struggled after the frost giant battle. There was absolutely zero action after that battle. The destroyer seen was such a let down. The final battle between Thor and Loki was downplayed...pretty sure when Gods fight, there'll be more destruction than that.

Captain America had the most action of any marvel movie, and that's with the montages!

I believe it's about an INCH behind Iron Man for best movie, however, the more I watch Cap (I'm now on 5 times), the better it gets. And that is a good measure for a film.

I fell asleep watching the THOR commentary.

marvel72
marvel72 - 10/28/2011, 3:44 PM
@ supes17

also the fight with the destroyer was over to quick,i don't know if you know the origin of the destroyer.

odin built the destroyer to protect us from the celestials, odin asked each god to put a portion of their power into it.

so my point is how quick thor defeated the destroyer it should of been much longer & if thor fights the hulk in the avengers well after the fight the hulk had with the abomination, thor will steam roll the hulk.

I liked Thor better too but Cap was good.
Bodwulf
Bodwulf - 10/28/2011, 3:59 PM
capcyclopsftw I disagree, Thor and Cap seemed like they were exactly the same quality. They were different stories but the effects and acting and everything else seemed equal. In America they made almost the same money (Thor 181 mil, Cap 176 mil)and Viewer reaction was good for both (Thor 77% and Cap 79% on Rotten Tomatoes). I understand you liked Cap better but, both are good solid films.

@marvel72:
True. I agree about Thor destroying Hulk. I was disappointed on how much the Hulk was toned down for TIH. He was almost knocked out when Abomination simply threw him across the street. He was also incapacitated by a chain and got his skin pierced by a spike.
The Hulk I know can withstand nuclear explosions.
The new hulk might have trouble with the Destroyer
As much as I dislike Ang Lee's Hulk, he was pretty accurate when it came to his invulnerability. Not the fact that he was 15 ft tall, but that he could take everyone down like nothing.

How much do dvd/blu-ray sells help the over all profitability of a movie? I ask because I do not know and I know someone here will know. For example how many Green Lantern dvd/blu-rays would need to be sold to push a sequel? Does high sells of CATFA push a sequel faster along than otherwise?
thingrock4
thingrock4 - 10/28/2011, 4:18 PM
@Marvel72-I DO know the origin of the Destroyer very well in fact-and I always wondered why THOR didn't just lift him up and punish him(like in the movie) or banish him into another dimension-by the way Destroyer is made of the same unbreakable metal as Thor's hammer(so Mjolner hurled by Thor's strength can absolutley damage him)but is fully functional by the spirit/will of another. In this case:Loki-so this incarnation is not quite as powerful as it's almost unlimited potential.MAKE MINE MARVEL!!!!
marvel72
marvel72 - 10/28/2011, 4:20 PM
@ supes17

the ang lee hulk which was 15 ft tall back in the early days of the hulk comic he was capable of growing to 15ft,the more angry he got the bigger & stronger he became,i never actually liked that side of the hulk 8/9 ft is big enough.
Oxion
Oxion - 10/28/2011, 4:21 PM
Movie was so disappointing. No real battle with the Skull, Cap spent most of the movie not doing anything but running and being a big softy about everything and just waving his hand "hey im important, look at me!" I mean really, in everyone argument all they compare is the action. Maybe thats why so many are easily entertained and calling every movie "EPIC" with every little explosion they see. Thor is not perfect but it is far better than Captain America. This movie was used not to capture the true essence of Captain America but to bring in money and build up to the Avengers.
marvel72
marvel72 - 10/28/2011, 4:26 PM
@ thingrock4

yeah i agree thor should be able to take out the destroyer but not within two minutes,an armour that was built to take on one of the most powerful races the celestial's,well that alone should of been enough for a longer fight.
Spidey91
Spidey91 - 10/28/2011, 4:38 PM
@NextHero08

I think they captured the essence of Cap fairly well,he didn't change after the experiment,he was the same guy with the same ideals.
in the first half they established the character of Steve Rogers and how he came to be Captain America, and in the second half, basically, they showed Cap blowing sh*t up :P

they could have done a little more with the whole "my best friend is dead" part thou.
thingrock4
thingrock4 - 10/28/2011, 4:38 PM
@marvel72-it is true that even Thor has to throw a SH!TLOAD DOWN to take him out this IS an intro movie and there was a chance of us not getting to see Destroyer at all-plus Thor has mortally wounded GALACTUS and smashed through a Celestial's armor so let's be happy MARVEL DID NOT hold back on showing Thor's awsome strength like every single SUPERMAN movie-we get prime time baby---we get THE GOD OF THUNDER(Q AC/DC)we getTHOR!!!!
