Jeremy Renner as Captain America?

Jeremy Renner as Captain America?

We've heard the rumors about Renner and the role of Hawkeye, but this article has a different view. Take a look!

So we all know about the ongoing "talks" between "The Hurt Locker" star and Marvel about the potential role of Hawkeye in several upcoming films, including "Captain America" and "The Avengers." Renner recently stated that the whole thing was blown out of proportion and that it's still just an idea at this point.

I happened to come across this article over at cinefools.com (sorry if this is a repost) and the writer brings up some interesting points. Here is an exerpt from the article by CineFools:

"Now here is my guess on what he is actually doing. I think Mr Jeremy Renner is actually in talks to play Captain America. With Joe Johnston hoping to start filming in June, they have to have someone in mind or even someone sealed for the deal. As they will have screen test, costume tests and all other pre production thingies that need to be done beforehand. Now that we have this rumor of Hawkeye thrown out and remembering that Marvel are sneaky buggers. This may be the curveball meant to throw us off. Hell, he may have been offered the role of Hawkeye until a screen-test made him perfect for the big man himself. As for the role of Steve Rogers/Capt America he is the right age and build. He has the right screen presence to command authority as well as that square jaw to pull of the outfit. Also there is that Ironman 2 poster rumor that Captain America will be in Ironman 2. If so then they must already have their man.

Now, think of it through Marvel’s eyes. Jeremy Renner is still fresh enough to be cheaper than a big name and he will be able to sign for numerous films. He is also bordering on stardom and this will make him an economical star for a company renowned for its shrewd ways. Also what other films has he signed onto yet apart from wrapping up The Town?"

ecksmanfan: So, I have a couple questions/comments:
1- What is the Iron Man 2 poster rumor that is mentioned?
2- While I really like Renner, I'm not sure if he's Cap. This article makes some interesting points, but I think its kind of a stretch.

What do you kids think?

Well, they could do worse (i.e. Worthington) or they could do better (i.e. Ackles)

@IronClad- yeah, that's got me curious. So far I've only seen two posters and neither of them have anything to do with or even come close to mentioning Cap

He's a fantastic actor, but I don't think he's right for Captain America. He'd be an awesome Hawkeye, but meh to him as Cap. There are certainly worse choices, but plenty of better ones too.

We all know Matt Damon should be Cap anyway ;)

Renner doesn't look like Steve Rogers in the face.
He has blond hair sort of but that don't mean anything.

Matt Damon has the persona to play Cap and his face
resembles Steve Rogers.
Matt played the head of the C. I. A. in THE GOOD SHEPHERD
and BOURNE, another C.I.A. agent. He's a leader type
actor.

@Tyler and DDD:
I don't know when all the Damon love started, but to me seeing Damon as Cap is like seeing Leo as Cap; neither are actors I could remove from their off screen persona if I saw them dressed up as Cap. I would see them bounding around in the Red, White, and Blue and say to myself, "Oh, there's Matt as Cap." and no just see them and say, "That's Cap."

I honestly think a mid-level star like Renner is a much better choice for Cap because he doesn't come with the bagage. There is more chance for him to simply be recognized as the character and not as the actor playing the character. I still don't think we've seen Cap yet. I think Marvel will hit us with the casting soon and it will be someone we hadn't considered and someone that will be pitch perfect if not spot on physically.

If I remember correctly the 4 IM2 poster clues all pointed to the launching of the IM2 official trailer.

Renner isn't Cap. What I took from his denial interview was that he let the Hawkeye cat out of the bag too early.

It sounds to me like he is a reasonable lock for The Avengers movie, but questionable for Thor.

I don't think I would mind this. He's certainly got the range for the part, and he hasn't had a defining role yet which are two qualities I want for the actor that plays Cap.

I actually like this choice. Renner certainly has the acting chops and screen presence. I actually wouldn't mind Dicaprio who is a great actor and has that retro look down to a T. But he would also command a greater price. Leo would actually be worth the big bucks if you really think about it though. He is one of a handful of actors that can generate $$$/fill seats in the overseas markets. That is extremely important to a films success and profitability. While many people weren't/aren't big on Spider-Man 3...it made something like 500 million overseas which helped to be the highest grossing of the Spidey flicks. The studios recognize that foreign box office is very important, and it wouldn't surprise me if they went with a "Big" name actor like Leo. But if they were to go with an up and comer, i'm sure thy'd round out the cast of supporting actors with top quality actors(example:Anthony Hopkins in Thor). Just my opinion.
