Directors Explain Cap's “Stealth Outfit” And More In CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER

During Comic-Con weekend, Cinema Blend was among websites to chat with Anthony & Joe Russo about their Marvel sequel, Captain America: The Winter Soldier. From Black Widow's loyalties to The Howling Commandos' possible return, the Q&A also touched on Cap's new uniform & shield. “So, it’s out there, but for us, it was, it’s thematic for the film, you know,” says Joe Russo. “You’ll see when you see the movie what he’s doing and who he’s working for in the beginning of the film, that costume is appropriate for what they’re asking him to do. It is a stealth outfit. It is for secret missions and I think that, you know, it’s thematic. You know, you read online, people get rankled when you, you know, mess with the stars and the stripes, but there’s a very specific reason we did it in this film. We won’t talk about the other outfits that appear in the movie, which you’ll see in the movie, but again, I’ll just say, that the use of the costume in this film has a very thematic arc to it and hopefully a very arousing arc.”

Cap's new advanced fighting style also factored into the costume's design, says Anthony Russo. “It’s very much grounded in real military sort of functionality and purpose. He kicks a lot of ass in this film.” Dotting more on Cap's combat skills, Joe Russo reveals, “Cap is a very sharp individual and part of the serum accelerates his learning ability and if he’s going to be working for who he’s working for at the beginning of the movie, then we felt that he would be the absolute best at every style of fighting that he could be and that he would train himself to be the best to fit into a modern society.” Noting that it made sense in the first film that Cap had a sort of John Sullivan approach to fighting, Joe continues, “Now, he’s trained. He’s trained exhaustively among some of the best people in the world. So, you see all sorts of movement out of him and we did a lot of intensive research with our stunt team, a lot of pre-fight videos and things that we’re really experimenting with how he would move in this movie, how he would fight. I think people will be really shocked when they see his style of fighting.”

Further along in the interview, the Russo brothers were asked about Cap's WWII allies, the Howling Commandos, appearing in the sequel. While playing coy about the possibilities, the duo directors did confirm their costumes will appear as a Smithsonian exhibit in the film. For specs on sci-fi elements, Frank Grillo, Black Widow and more, head over to Cinema Blend for the full interview.

“Captain America: The Winter Soldier” picks up where “Marvel’s The Avengers” left off, as Steve Rogers struggles to embrace his role in the modern world and teams up with Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, to battle a powerful yet shadowy enemy in present-day Washington, D.C. Starring Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Cobie Smulders, Frank Grillo, Georges St-Pierre, Hayley Atwell, Toby Jones, Emily VanCamp and Maximiliano Hernández with Samuel L. Jackson and Robert Redford, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” is directed by the team of Anthony and Joe Russo from a screenplay written by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely and is based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series, first published in 1941. Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige is producing the film. Executive producers on the project include Alan Fine, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Michael Grillo and Stan Lee. The creative production team on the film includes director of photography Trent Opaloch, production designer Peter Wenham, editors Jeffrey Ford, A.C.E. and Mary Jo Markey, A.C.E. and three time Oscar®-nominated costume designer Judianna Makovsky. “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” is set for release on April 4, 2014. In addition to “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” Marvel Studios will release a slate of films based on other iconic Marvel characters including “Iron Man 3” on May 3, 2013; “Thor: The Dark World ” on November 8, 2013; “Guardians of the Galaxy” on August 1, 2014; “Marvel's The Avengers” sequel on May 1, 2015; and “Ant-Man” on November 6, 2015!

Yes, a baby blue shield is SO stealthy.

All I can hope is that he has this costume for a VERY limited time...

the Avengers costumes is laughable and not dignified enough, he looks like a cosplayer on his Avengers costumes, the blue shield is awesome too.

Thank you! People really need to stop complaining about the suit because IMO it looks pretty cool and is a definite improvement from the avengers suit. This suit is meant for stealth purposes so that's why red and white are not on the suit.. He eventually gets his original suit back which is gonna AWESOME! So no need to hate on this movie because of the suit. I'm also so excited to see his new style of fighting and I am glad that they adressed how cap was not experienced in the first film and that he has been training. BADASS!

Sounds pretty sweet. The suit(s) seem to be very symbolic in this one. The Russos appear to be a lot more passionate about this film than I initially thought.

@MexicanSuperman: Nah. It'll be 50. ;-)

If the footage they showed at Comic-Con is any indication, no one will be complaining about the fight scenes in this movie and Evans looked really good in that suit.

Insane the comic con panel. I can tell you that you will see cap kick more ass in this then you have In the other movies. He is brutal. The movie looks insane. Phase 2 is going to be amazing. Oh and all the scenes I have seen in the movie he has the red white and blue shield.
