Why I Love Captain America: The Winter Soldier

With Captain America: The Winter Soldier defeating The Lego Movie at the box office I've decided to write what I loved the most about the film and why it's my favorite CBM of all time.

"For The Longest Time I Just Wanted To Do What Was Right."

                                                                              -Captain America / Steve Rogers

With Captain America: The Winter Soldier defeating The Lego Movie at the box office I've decided to write what I loved the most about the film and the above quote captures why perfectly.  First off I should tell you that my favorite superheroes in comics are the ones that are near perfect for instance Cap, Superman, and Spider-Man are my favorites and it's mostly because of just how almost pure of heart they all are. Now I know a lot of people dislike these characters for those same reasons  because they say this makes them bland. On the other hand I believe these characters are the most interesting because you see them live in a world filled with corruption and evil and you see them fight not just against physical evils but you see them fight for there ideals. This is exactly what the Winter Soldier gave us. They gave us a story with a lead who is infallible but rather than try to make him flawed (which seems to be the norm when characters like these are adapted) they merely made him struggle in a world filled with flaws and grey areas.

This was refreshing for me because there has been a lack (in my opinion) of characters who are almost perfect and instead it seems to me that every lead is flawed and far from perfect in an attempt to be "realistic". Instead in Cap 2 everyone  on board keeps Cap the same they keep him as the same skinny man who had the greatness within him brought to the outside as well.

I also hope that this film will help inspire other films to not be afraid to portray a character as the archetypes they are rather than drag them through the mud to make them more "relatable".

Yet it wasn't just the filmakers ability to keep Cap's purity intact and still create an incredible movie it was also the themes they dealt with. One theme is quite simple and that is of friendship. Just take a loom at the ending where Bucky is whaling on  Steve with his bionic arm telling him that he's his mission. Then when he has the chance to finish him Steve tells him that he is with him to the end of the line. This line uttered by Cap wasn't just to let Bucky know that he was his friend but also that he remembers the time that he himself said to him  during his skinny Steve days and that they meant a lot for him to have his friend by him.

Then there is the theme of freedom vs, security. Not only did the film manage to send a message about national security in this day and age but they didn't without being heavy handed or one sided in the debate, For instance when Cap is shown the Project: Insight he get into a discussion with Fury and says a true Cap like quote " This isn't freedom this is fear" but rather than being on the nose the filmakers decide to address Fury's side of the argument by having him point out that not everything Cap and crew did in the greatest generation was all squeaky clean. Then throughout the film we follow Cap though this grey filled world until the climax when Cap and co. decide that though the price of freedom may be high it is a price that is worth paying.

These are all the things that make Captain America: The Winter Soldier my favorite comic book movie of all time. I simply love it all the action, acting, directing, dialogue and if I had to write a detailed analysis of everything I loved I physically wouldn't be capable of such a feat so instead I would just say I loved EVERYTHING!

Captain America The Winter Soldier for me is one of the best films of the MCU and personally for the me the film is the best cbm of the year.

I wouldn't put Spider-Man in the category of "Near Perfect Superheroes"

Spider-Man is very flawed. He does have a strong purity of heart but he does commit mistakes a plenty, much, much more often than Supes or Cap. His Origin Story is based on one of those mistakes, and the fact that he's flawed and not perfect is what made him so popular back on the 60's.

Other than that, very nice article. You get a thumbs up from me.

I have a friend who asked me if TWS was better than TDK and I told him its up there because both touch upon worldly topics for the time they were released. And TWS really makes you think "damn...what if this is actually going on now". I love the movie and cant wait for it to come out on blu ray.

Man this article just puts a big ole' happy smile on my face! Loved how you explained your reasons for loving TWS and I agree with you. This movie, IMO, executed many things effectively and what you mentioned were some of them.

Can't wait to see this released on Blu-Ray! I'll definitely pick it up when it releases.

Great article, Superhero96! Very well written and very nice.
I've always wanted to see a new Superman in the caught in the new era. The best comic that featured that kind of story was when he teamed-up with Gen-13. He was a old-school do-gooder boyscout, while Gen 13 were today's new age bratty kids. At first they didn't get along. Superman felt down and begun to believe that he was no longer relevant today. But after some adventures together, the Gen13 kids learned to respect and idolize him in the end.

I'm so glad we got that kind of story in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

I agree with you. It took me twelve years, but I finally found a film which I love more than Spider-Man (2002).

The movie is good but I don't think it's absolutely flawless and is the best CBM ever. DOFP was ALOT better in my opinion. Redford's character was too cliche and in some instances it felt the movie was a bit too predictable.

The Avengers, Captain America: TFA and Captain America: TWS are easily my 3 favorite CBMs of all times.

Good article! :)

This is also my favorite CBM to date. While other CBM's use so much CG in their fight scenes (Iron Man, Superman, etc), TWS was more visceral and IMO had the best hand to hand combat scenes of any CBM thus far.

TWS is to phase 3 what Iron Man 3 and Dark World should have been in terms of story, action and emiotional impact to the Marvel Universe.

It's an action movie that is actually about the most important struggle in the US. Freedom vs Security. It completely captured the essence of the best comic book story arc I have read since "The Man without Fear". It made superheros the most believable I have seen since the Dark Knight, and it made you wonder about what our world would be like without that little bit of hero in all of us more than any movie since Iron Man.

Tomas Paine Wrote about something called a Sunshine Patriot and a Summer Soldier, those that fight when it's easy, when it's black and white. When there is a clear cut good guy and you know you will win. This nation is full of so many Sunshine Patriots, and Summer Soldiers. To fix what's wrong with our country we need a midnight patriot, we need a Winter Soldier, Steve Rogers is the Winter Soldier.

This is probably my favourite CBM.

I get where you're coming from on the whole "near perfect hero" thing. I mean, don't get me wrong, I love the Wolverines of the comic world as much as the next bloke, but I've always had a deep appreciation for the Caps and Supermans of comics as well, the "boyscouts", y'know? I mean, it's easy to compromise.. but it takes real balls to stand firm in your beliefs while the rest of the world's tellin' you to f*ck off. Cap doesn't need to change, Cap doesn't need to be like anybody else, Cap doesn't need to conform to the world, that's the whole point of the character- they should strive to be more like him.

But, yeah.. I loved the movie, I really did. I thought Winter Soldier was a fantastic villain, every time the dude shows up you know somebody's gettin' the shit kicked out of 'em. I thought the action scenes were brilliant, I thought they did a good job of capturing the way I've seen Cap fight in the comics for all these years, I thought they did a great job of balancing thematic content with a healthy dose of good ol' fashioned fun, y'know? And, last, but not least- Falcon was awesome. I mean, seriously- Anthony and Chris had great f*ckin' chemistry.

I think one of my favourite scenes was when Steve and Falc are talkin' out in the hall after Sam's wrapped up his counseling session. I mean, Steve was wondering just where he fits in all of this, and Sam.. Sam just wants to get back into the world, he's looking for something to fight for.

They're coming from different backgrounds, but they both just want something to believe in.

It's easy to see why they became such good friends.

The Winter Soldier was just a complete badass in this movie. Whenever he showed up you could expect a lot of people to get murdered. The fight scenes were some of the best I have ever seen. The fight on the streets was the best fight of the movie and just left you wanting more.
