Captain McConaughey!... Or is that Matthew America?

Captain McConaughey!... Or is that Matthew America?

Looks like within a year, Matthew McConaughey has gone from almost complete denial of who Captain America is, to interest in now playing the patriot poster-boy.

According to MTV, "Though he hasn't seen a script yet, Matthew McConaughey seems to have changed his tune regarding a potential role in the 'Captain America' film.

Late last year, McConaughey didn't seem to know who 'Captain America' was, much less have an interest in playing him, but repeated mentions of his name with that of the patriotic leader of The Avengers may have sent the 'Ghosts of Girlfriends Past' star to the back-issue bin."

His name has been mentioned among fans as a favorite, however, there seems to be just as big of a following against him. Such as the folks over at GeekTyrant.

It appears that Jennifer Garner is behind the thought as well when she told McConaughey, "You would be a great Captain America. You could wear a cape and tights and little pointy shoes."

I liked him in A Time to Kill and Reign Of Fire..although his accent gets on my nerves! Also good in a horror movie called Frailty. Dont see him as Cap though..but hes a better age and a better look and has a lot more experience than all of these dudes from TV shows that people are promoting

I love him... he's great in frailty, great actor and all...but I dont see him as Captain America. He loves his MJ and I cant see Cappy puff, puff, passing... Well Matthew doesnt pass either... but he puffs, puffs! lol..

Now I know alot of celebrities do this...& its not why I think he shouldnt be cappy. But seriously...this one is not for him ... he looks all wrong for the part imo... Cappy has that boy scout look about him...whereas Mathew is more laid back, surfer dude, hang loose type of guy.He got the curly hair... I dk.. just doesnt do it for me as Cappy.

fart.

McConaughey, fart. He must have checked his bank account and THEN thought it was a good idea 2 cash in on a legendary character. Make multiple films, millions of dollars, and millions of NEW fans and sexy bitches. He is a good actor but he's two weird and his accent is to texan. Where is chaplain america from anyway? Isnt he from Toronto?

haha OH JENIFFER! you silly B****! You're lucky you're hot as hell!

ANYWAYS... I just thought about something (weird i know! a human being constantly thinking?!) Have any of you watched Southland? or, dare i say it, the OC? the blonde guy, imo, would be a great Cap. If they are doing the young, frozen, then thawed WWII vet. he would be good. Although, and this is gonna sound as fruity as pebbles, he doesn't have the eyes for it. told ya. his eyes are kinda squinty. but he's young, he plays a rookie authority figure well. I think that since he WAS from WWII there would be things he wasn't very good at in the commanding part. Like I've said before: it's all about the command. But yeah if not then maybe McConaughey... MAYBE!

I like Matthew for Cap.. He does have a strange accent but guess what? most of the people in 30's and 40's had one. And he's got the acting chops already. He's had romantic comedies, action/adventure flicks/suspense and he played all roles brilliantly. He can go toe to toe with Norton and Downey when the scene calls for a light mood or a heavy one.

Yeah Elektra blew....She blew me alright lol but I'm iffy on Matt as Captain America yet, I think he has the face for it, but maybe not the voice...You all know what the voice should sound like and to me, that is the major part rather than the face of Captain America...I just want to hear the lineup say " Thumbs up Soldier"
cable82
cable82 - 4/30/2009, 9:18 AM
He needs to get rid of the accent and cut his hair. Then he might be ok for the role.
JamesH
JamesH - 4/30/2009, 9:35 AM
I dont think he's accent was that strong in Reign of Fire compared to other movies. He played a bad ass military man there and he played it convincingly.... if he nailed that, how can he not nail a more subdued lighthearted cleancut Joe from the 40's?
JamesH
JamesH - 4/30/2009, 9:44 AM
If we go for the usual Cap look and a younger guy, Chaning Tatum kinda suits the part as well. He did a good job playing a soldier in Stop Loss too. But i dont think he or the other younger guys can keep up with Norton and Downey though.

And it would look weird that Cap looks extremely young compared to Norton and Downey... they should be more or less on the same age group. If it were juz a Cap movie, any of the young guys would be great but in Avengers, the young ones juz mess up the chemistry... it usually works with films where there's the tough old guy who take on a young gungho apprentice/partner. Cap and the Avengers is totally different though.

This is going to sound totally wierd, but what about the dude from "Saved by the Bell"? I forget his name but his acting chops were bolstered by a run on NYPD Blue and I think he has the classic Cap look with the blonde hair from SBTB and all that. Slightly younger than Downey and Norton, but....eh?

Matthew McConaughey is so not right for Cap. I would say one of the brothers on Supernatural. Jared Padalecki or Jensen Ackles. I would love to see either one of them play Cap.

Matthew is the perfect Captain America. I'm actually working on some movie posters that I intend to put up here by the end of next week. Look out for my Black Panther posters too featuring my cast coming soon...

I wouldnt say Matthew is perfect but for me, he's the best name mentioned so far. Others are waaaaay too young to be casted as the leader of the Avengers.

Please share with us your Matthew Cap images Black! :)

James, Matthew McConaughey is to old for the part. Cap does not have lines around his eyes like Matthew McConaughhey.

If Matthew McConaughey plays Cap I'm boycotting this movie he is just awful!!!
JamesH
JamesH - 5/3/2009, 9:33 AM
comicbookmom, depends on which artist you like. :) If its the Ron Lim Cap, he's young... if its the Hitch Cap, he's got the lines.

In comic books, Stark and Banner look younger too... no lines around their eyes neither but Norton and Downey were perfect! I perfectly understand why you and others want a younger Cap and believe me, i do too which is why i like Chaning Tatum for the roll.

BUT you have to cast someone who could fit in along with Downey, Cheadle, Jackson and Norton among others and most of the young actors mentioned would stand out like a sore thumb among them seasoned but talented actors.

Juz imagine if they casted a pretty boy teenage actor for the part of Aragorn in Lord of the Rings... it would be the same for the Avengers. They all have to fit in together as a group and not juz individually.
JamesH
JamesH - 5/4/2009, 6:25 AM
btw, i was wrong.. Hitch was the writer and who i meant was Finch. :)
comicbookmom
comicbookmom - 5/4/2009, 2:58 PM
James, Cheadle is a worse pick for Rodes than McConaughey is for Cap. The really really dropped the ball on that casting pick! And Stark and Banner are a little bit older than Rogers. You have to think they both went through minimum 4 year of college for Stark and min 8 years for Banner. Cap went through the Super Soldier program at the rip ol age of 19. He is younger than the rest of the game. Well, not by birth year but aging.
JamesH
JamesH - 5/5/2009, 10:04 AM
Yep.. that MIGHT be true if we go with the age specifics. And Cap couldve been 16 when he enlisted even. But think about the the chemistry between em on set. It juz doesnt work. Its like asking Mark Texeira to draw the rest of the team and have cap be drawn by lets say, Joe Madureira. Even if they both are awesome artists and would draw great characters, their looks wont mix.

If its juz the Captain America movie, hey... i agree with you guys coz your picks are great (although i like Chaning Tatum more ;) ) but we have to consider the Avengers movie. BTW, i dont think Stark is that older than Rogers coz he's a child genius. He got accelerated probably in elementary, highschool and college. Same can be said for Banner but not nearly as smart as Stark though.

Actually, if anyone has ever watched the movie "Reign Of Fire", you could visualize Mathew McConaughey as a war era hero. I think he could pull it off just as easily as Ed Norton pulled off Bruce Banner and surprise the hell out of everyone. As far as Cap being younger or older, he may have been around 19 when he got the SSS, but he was in combat for four years and war ages a person faster than a presidency. Just take one look at President Obama after 100 or so days. So, as far as looking younger or older, it's really six of one, half dozen of the other. I've been a Cap fan for 36 years and I don't really recall any issue stating that he was in his late teens and just out of high school when he tried to enlist. As I recall, he was already out of an orphanage and beginning a career as an artist. Plus, during WWII, they were taking every one 30 and under as long as you were not the last of your blood line, which I believe Steve Rogers actually was. Marvel will pull it off. It'll be great.
JamesH
JamesH - 5/7/2009, 7:44 PM
totally agree wdbeckiv!

He rocked in Reign of fire! After seeing him in light and romatic comedies, nobody wouldve expected him to nail that the grit and physical bruteness of his character there! That juz shows how well rounded an actor he is. Most people juz see him as this mindless surfer jock which he isnt. He was serious as hell in Frailty too!
