Carter Baizen from “Gossip Girl” will now take on the comic world as Bucky Barnes, Captain America’s sidekick.

26-year-old Sebastian Stan, who is also known as Carter on “Gossip Girl,” has been cast as Bucky Barnes for the upcoming “The First Avenger: Captain America.” Stan had actually come in to audition for the role of Captain America, which went to Chris Evans, but apparently the producers liked him enough to make him Bucky Barnes.

Bucky Barnes is the teenaged orphan, who is not old enough to join the army in the comic series, so he joins Captain America to take on the Nazis. Bucky dies in the final World War II adventure but, in 2005, came back to life as political assassin Winter Soldier. Producers feel that the younger generations will be able to identify with this character.

Aside from “Gossip Girl,” Stan has also starred in “The Covenant,” “Red Dawn,” “Black Swan,” and the new horror movie, “The Apparition.”

According to sources, Stan has signed on for five or six movies and Evans signed on for eight additional movies. Sources say that Evans’ movies will include two Captain America sequels, three Avengers movies, and three potential crossover films.

Shooting for the film begins this summer.

It sounds good to me. I mean, 9 films to be on the safe side, like Sam Jackson.

It's looking like they're going to try to do a Civil War crossover film within the next 10 years. Maybe they'll have Bucky become Cap after that.

Theoretically, if they could get all the rights back to X-Men, Spiderman, Fantastic 4, Dare Devil and Elektra within the next 10 years, then yes, a Civil War story line could happen. However, I doubt that will happen!

Not to mention the liklihood of having THAT many characters in one film would be overwhelming and would NEVER do any of the characters any justice. As MikeSanderson said, maybe an animated feature in the future.

The coolest thing about this article...3 Avenger films!!

Well if they made it a trilogy i think Civil War could work. I mean they've already kinda set the groundwork making Tony open about being Iron Man.

it might seem like a lot of movies, and yeah it is. but think about it. 3 Cap movies. 3 Avengers movies. and then that leaves room for 3 cameos in other movies, no matter how important the role. if he shows up in a movie for 3 minutes, that counts as one of the 9 movies.

like Fury. thats probably why he isn't going to be in Thor (at least thats the rumor). they can't waste him by having tiny appearances in every solo movie.

how cool would it be to see team-up movies, like an Iron Man/Cap movie?? god i love what Marvel is doing!

DAMN! 9 movies! that'll keep this website up and running for the next few years

and yeah, we won't see a Civil War movie. That story has SO many characters involved, it would more than likely be a tangled mess. plus, i don't really want to see a Civil War movie without Spidey, Reed Richards, and all the other important people that Fox owns.

the only way it could work, is if sometime in the future, Disney/Marvel get the rights back to all those characters, and they make a trilogy.

Yet another article and another reason why The WB sucks.

If The WB wanted they could easily start filming Infinite Crisis or Kingdom Come tomorrow and include everyone.

No lawsuits, no waiting for characters to be released by another studio. Nothing.

GLOW IN THE DARK BATMOBILE ??!?!?!

WB, YOU SUCK !!!

I'm kind of surprised that no one considered that Winter Soldier may actually be one of the villains in Avengers, with a chance to turn later on, I mean this is what happened with the Comics, right? That would explain why Stan's in 5-6 movies, with two or three Cap movies and two or three Avengers. Hero(sidekick style) turned villain turned hero.

at least it shows chris evans is in for more than just the first movie, unlike so many other stars who take on super hero roles.
Upupandaway
Upupandaway - 4/6/2010, 10:01 PM
@Casualnerd82: I would think that he would be a villain in a Cap sequel. The only thing about the Winter Soldier thing is how they make his Soviet training relevant in the world without an USSR. I'm interested into how they'll do this with Whiplash/Crimson Dynamo in IM2. A lot of Marvel's best villains come out of the Cold War.
Casualnerd82
Casualnerd82 - 4/6/2010, 10:06 PM
@Upupandaway: That's a possibility, but I was thinking that with the way the Comics explained it, he was cryogenically frozen and 'thawed' when needed, but when the Soviet Union fell apart, He had a kind of 'Villain without a cause' thing going, maybe attempting to bring back the USSR? I don't know, I'm not the best at coming up with these ideas, just thought it should be pointed out. Aside from that, however, unless they plan on making 5 or 6 Cap movies, how would Bucky/Stan play a part in a total of 5-6 movies without playing a role in Avengers.

The brubaker run of cap since steve rodgers death is really all about winter soldier! Plenty of story there id say! And he could cameo in Avengers for the odd assassination!
jjmeylar
jjmeylar - 4/6/2010, 11:09 PM
@blankofthedead: Bucky is frozen, comes back, gets brainwashed, becomes the Winter Soldier, fights Steve, comes back to the right state of mind, and so on.

@Casualnerd82: I think that they're just being safe with it. I doubt that they have 5 or 6 films planned out for him, already. I bet that they only know of the first 2 "Captain America" films. Other than that, I think that they just want him under contract in case they find a need/want to use him in something else.
AngPandoy
AngPandoy - 4/6/2010, 11:12 PM
well 9 movies is a lot but im guessing some of them are just cameos or something? just like sam jackson did, in the iron man series and RDJ on hulk.... but 3 cap movies is gonna be awesome!
Casualnerd82
Casualnerd82 - 4/6/2010, 11:19 PM
@JJMyelar, you're probably right, though I'd personally enjoy seeing him given at least a small roll in Avengers as a 'Mystery' villain, maybe a lead in for Cap 2.
jjmeylar
jjmeylar - 4/6/2010, 11:25 PM
@Casualnerd82: That would be great, and is quite possible. I'm hoping that they have Hulk and maybe Hydra or Ultron in "Avengers". Though, Ultron would be best for a sequel so that they can have him create The Vision, and then The Vision can join the team at the end of the film. Also, Hydra would be more of a Nick Fury solo film kind of thing, but it would work for "Avengers". I'm hoping for a Winter Soldier cameo, though. And you said that you're "not the best at coming up with these ideas". You may not be the best, but you had a good idea.

CorndogBurglar - 4/7/2010, 5:18 AM
they should at least make people think Bucky dies in the first Cap movie. then in a later Cap movie, he should return. i don't see any reason for Bucky to have a 5-6 picture deal if they aren't planning on making him Winter Soldier.

CorndogBurglar - 4/7/2010, 5:23 AM
@ brazilian

i'm not sure why you don't think the x-men would work in the Avengers world. mutants are a part of the marvel universe, and MANY Avengers over the years have been mutants.

but, hey, you'll get your wish, since Marvel can't use any of the x-men because of Fox owning the rights...
Hellsbells51
Hellsbells51 - 4/7/2010, 6:47 AM
There's a few places you can go with Winter Soldier...obviously Captain America films are one of them, but you can also fit him in the Wolverine films as it was revealed he aided Wolverine in the escape from the Weapon X lab and also murdered Wolvie's wife Itsu while she was pregnant with their son Daken.

There was also a brief relationship w/ Black Widow...so that could either spell Avengers and/or Iron Man...maybe a future S.H.I.E.L.D. movie?

It would be nice to see a movie of his own though...it could make an interesting story as they fill in the blanks from Bucky's apparent death to becoming the Winter Soldier and so on.

Captain America:

Captain America 1, 2 & 3
Avengers 1, 2 & 3
Cross-overs: Thor, Iron Man 3 & Incredible Hulk 2

Bucky:

Captain America 1, 2 & 3
Avengers 2 and/or maybe 3
Cross-over: Iron Man 3 or Incredible Hulk 2
He'll probably be Winter Soldier by Avengers 2 or Captain America 2/3
