Description Of Captain America: The First Avenger Present Day Opening Scene!

Hit the jump for some spoiler filled details on the present day opening of Captain America: The First Avenger, which as you know, features his body being discovered in the Arctic...

While I initially resisted the temptation to read SuperHeroHype's full description of the Captain America footage they saw at Cinema Con yesterday, the temptation finall proved too much, and I was shocked to notice the following details about the present day opening to the highly anticipated movie from Marvel Studios.

The first clip is essentially how the movie opens with two military men meeting someone out in the colds of the Arctic and being led to an enormous egg-like object protruding out from the snow; the camera pulls away to show that it's been found in a fairly remote area with nothing around.

We don't want to say too much about this opening scene except that Captain America won't be encased in an iceberg like he was in the comics, as they're going for a more realistic approach to how he gets from the WWII era to today. We will say that the scene ends with the men finding Cap's trademark shield covered in ice.

Starring Chris Evans as Captain America, Sebastian Stan as Bucky, Hugo Weaving as Red Skull, Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter, Tommy Lee Jones as Col. Chester Phillips, Stanley Tucci as Abraham Erskine and Dominic Cooper as Howard Stark, Captain America: The First Avenger will be released in 3D on July 22.

I can deal with that, someone frozen in ice for 50 plus years is a stretch for some people, so a minor change say maybe that egg like thing is a capsule housing Cap's body frozen in time by the cosmic cube or something.

It is a more realistic approach, and I love it! Great catch JOSH!

Good thing the alternate scene from Incredible Hulk wasn't officially part of the movie - you can clearly see the outline of Cap's body in the ice.

ITS NOT A MINOR CHANGE FOR ME IN FACT I WAS LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING THAT SCENE OF HIM IN THAT ICEBERG. THIS KIND OF RUINS IT FOR ME.BY THE WAY I THOUGHT MAYBE THEY WOULD SAVE THAT PART FOR THE END OF THE MOVIE OR THE BEGINING OF THE AVENGERS MOVIE. I HATE IT WHEN PEOPLE USE THE TERM ''REALISTIC APPROACH'' IN COMIC BOOK MOVIES, NONE OF IT IS REAL SO STOP TAKING THE FANTASY OUT OF THE COMICS.

In the Iron Man 2 SHIELD Data Vault, there was mention of a device very similar to the one described here. It was designed by Howard Stark.

@shocker

I don't think it's particularly farfetched (assuming you buy into the super-soldier serum to begin with). I get how it may seem a little hokey to mainstream audiences though.

I reckon it will be a type of cryo chamber, so he will be in stasis just like any number of sci fi flicks. I like the change. You can't actually be frozen in a block of ice and then thawed out alive!

I would think its an escape pod from the Rocket that probably goes screwy and he gets caught in it.
Buddha29
Buddha29 - 3/29/2011, 10:46 AM
Well, there was the alien in The Thing frozen in ice, thawed and awoke alive but it was an alien after all. Then there was the Giant Octopus and Mega Shark that were both frozen in ice, broken free and swam away very realistically, I might add.

I'll hold off judgement until I see how they do it. How does he get from the exploding rocket to the cryo egg thingy? is kinda what I'm curious about.

@superman5000

Nice Caps Lock douche.

You don’t have to be bound by comic cannon that’s decades old that may or may not have been a super-good idea to begin with.

The important concept is that CA has been in some type of suspended animation since the 40’s till now. What type of suspended animation is details. He is still found in the arctic wastes.

Grow up and stop acting like a little girl every time you encounter change.
Coldblood6
Coldblood6 - 3/29/2011, 10:57 AM
I have to say I too was looking forward to seeing CA frozen in the ice, so this is a bit disappointing. But certainly not film breaking. I'll wait and see what they come up with.

I did not think they needed to change anything. His survival is explained by the effects on his tissue/cells by the SSS&VR's.

Oh well. The lack of imagination of the GA once again results in changes in iconism.

We'll see how this turns out.
Fabs
Fabs - 3/29/2011, 11:00 AM
Extreme cold is supposed cause Cap's body to go into suspended animation. In fact it is a weakness of Cap afaik. I don't think it's so 'un-realistic' or any harder to accept than anything else cap - or Marvel - related.

@RorMachine. You can if you're your body's been altered by the serum... That's kind of the point.
Ryguy88
Ryguy88 - 3/29/2011, 11:03 AM
The change had to be done, people usually DIE when they are frozen. I hope everyone is okay with this deviation from the source material.
Fabs
Fabs - 3/29/2011, 11:03 AM
@Lordhuck: What kind of suspended animation is actually important. If it's not unique to Cap's metabolism then there's nothing special about it and any other character can go through it.

Grow up too and learn to accept other's people's opinion.
superpooper
superpooper - 3/29/2011, 11:06 AM
This is one case where "Artistic License" was used in a good way. Makes more sense that he was aided by some type of technology other than the super-serum that kept him alive, or suspended in ice for 60 years. Way too silly to to ask us to believe any human being can exist in a block of ice for 60 years and be revived unscathed. Although I wouldn't have had a problem either way (after all, it is a CBM) I don't mind a little better explanation for this one.
Ryguy88
Ryguy88 - 3/29/2011, 11:08 AM
Adding a bit of realism is incredibly necessary if they want these movies to have any lasting meaning or value. Making these characters at least somewhat believable is essential to the stories they are trying to tell.
spider1489
spider1489 - 3/29/2011, 11:09 AM
i understand why, but im honestly not happen with it, mainly because we already saw cap frozen in TIH opening scene, and cap is supposed to be frozen on accident (when he is fighting) if he is in a a chamber thing? i dont know, i will not judge til i see it though. i just always loved the thought of them finding him frozen amazed that he is still alive
superpooper
superpooper - 3/29/2011, 11:09 AM
@fabs This explanation does not exclude the fact that his super serum enhanced body played a major part in his survival. It very well still can be the main factor that allowed him to survive all this time. It just suggests that there were other mitigating factors that played into his survival. I get your point though. I would hate to think they don't explain the serum as the main factor why he survived. That would be silly and make it something not unique to his story.
WireySpindell
WireySpindell - 3/29/2011, 11:12 AM
Yes, usually freezing someone will kill the person, because the water in the cells crystallizes and damages the cells. But the explanation was the supersoldier serum allowed him to survive, like how some frogs can survive being frozen.

Not THAT farfetched, in the context of giant green gamma monsters and gods from other planets and stuff.
StrangerX
StrangerX - 3/29/2011, 11:12 AM
Ok so nobobdy's going with the escape pod from the rocket. I don't see why a cryogenic pod would be needed to help preserve someone in the artic.
superpooper
superpooper - 3/29/2011, 11:15 AM
Let's hope they don't completely change it to something like him and the Red Skull being zapped into the future by the cosmic cube. Now that will piss me off. NO TIME TRAVEL PLEASE.
LordHuck
LordHuck - 3/29/2011, 11:22 AM
@ Fabs

So what if any other character can go through the suspended animation process?

Being Frozen isn’t the important part here.

The important part is the “Man out of time” aspect. A man who was born in the 1920’s frozen in the 1940’s. A member of the “Greatest Generation”. Thrown forward into a different American time and culture. All his friends and family are elderly or dead. His America, the one he had fought so hard for has changed.. Will he come into conflict with the new American government policies ? Culture? Values? How much will he be changed by the 21st century? How much will he change the 21st century?

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

That is the important shit. Not weather or not he is in a cryo chamber or an iceberg…a cosmic time pocket…or whatever. Being frozen is just a plot device in order to achieve the “hero returned” “Man out of time” story.

Ryguy88
Ryguy88 - 3/29/2011, 11:31 AM
Wirey, does the serum put anti-freeze in the water already in his body, or continue to pump his heart so blood can flow to his brain? Even a frog will die if more than 70% of the water in it's body freezes. Maybe there is a way around it but it would take a bit too much focus away from the actual movie. Something designed to put humans into suspended animation can be part of the plot and it already explains itself.

Yeah, like the Cosmic Cube is more realistic than being brought back to life after 50 years in the ice....
