Hugo Weaving Not Keen On Reprising ‘Red Skull’ In CAPTAIN AMERICA 2...Or Ever Again

Dismissing any speculation that the villainous Hydra Leader will return in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Red Skull actor Hugo Weaving says he's not interested in reprising the role at all.

The penultimate sequence of last year's Captain America: The First Avenger movie featured Steve Rogers heroically taking on Johann Schmidt himself, before the Red Skull was seemingly fried by the Tesseract. However, it's strongly believed that the HYDRA commander was transported into the cosmos, which left doors open for a possible return in another movie. While that return likely won't be in the forthcoming sequel, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the villain's actor, Hugo Weaving, says he has no desire to reprise the role at all; Speaking with Collider, he said:

I [signed a multi-picture deal] for Captain America. I think the tendency, with those films, would be to probably not bring a villain back. They might for The Avengers, but I didn’t think I’d be in Captain America 2 or 3. I don’t think Red Skull will be there. And it’s not something I would want to do again. I’m glad I did it. I did sign up for a number of pictures and I suppose, contractually, I would be obliged to, if they forced me to, but they wouldn’t want to force someone to do it, if they didn’t want to. I think I’ve done my dash with that sort of film. It was good to do it and try it out, but to be honest, it’s not the sort of film I seek out and really am excited by. As an actor, to do all sorts of different films is great. It stretches you in different ways. But, I increasingly like to go back to what I used to always do, which is to get involved with projects that I really have a personal affiliation with.

Head to Collider for full chat. Marvel Studios are no strangers to recasting actors, but considering there have been multiple Red Skulls in the comics beyond Johann Schmidt, that potential dilemma could be easily resolved. Of course, this all depends on whether Marvel has any plans set for the villain in the future. What do you think?

Described as a political thriller, Marvel Studios’ “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” will pick-up where the highly anticipated film “Marvel’s The Avengers” leaves off, as Steve Rogers continues his affiliation with Nick Fury and the peacekeeping organization S.H.I.E.L.D, and struggles to embrace his role in the modern world.

Starring Chris Evans, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Scarlett Johansson and Samuel L. Jackson, and directed by Joe Russo & Anthony Russo from a screenplay by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” is based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series “Captain America” first published in 1941 and a comics institution ever since. “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” is scheduled for release on April 4, 2014. The film is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. And in addition, Marvel Studios will release a slate of films including “Iron Man 3” on May 3, 2013; “Thor: The Dark World ” on November 8, 2013; “Guardians of the Galaxy” on August 1, 2014; and the untitled “Marvel's The Avengers” sequel on May 1, 2015.

Doesn't matter. They can just do what the comics did. Multiple people took on the Red Skull persona in the comics, not just Johann Schmidt.

Him not wanting to return doesn't hurt the franchise whatsoever.

Hugo wants to move on as an Actor, he is really good, he should try independent films and use Hollywood to pay the bills... after all in Hollywood today nobody have enough brains or courage to try something original... everything is a remake, a sequel or an adaptation.

I do think Hugo did a good job with what he had, but I also think the movie's portrayal of Red Skull wasn't as great as it could have been. And for that, I think the script and Marvel's overall direction is more of the blame.

This is sad to hear. They didn't give him much to do in the first one. He needed that interrogation scene where he explains his life story to cap.

Instead he ended being about as interesting as Louis Jourdan's Anton Arcane in Swamp Thing.

thats a shame, but i remember him saying this almost a year ago as well. well at least with red skull/ Johann Schmidt another actor can take this role since red skull threw his (hugo weavings)face in the fire. so all that pretty much has to happen is get an actor whos passionate about the character and when hes red skull make him resemble hugo red skull and voice. and poof you gots an awesome red skull. i was kind expecting another actor to take on the role of red skull anyways. cause he would prob go undercover as politician as we have seen in the comics.

Haha, now comes all of the comments by Mavel fanboys saying how he wasn't that great. This has already happened multiple times with Marvel Studios actors. Fanboys say how great they are until the actor says something negative or says that they don't won't to return for another.

ok guys yall can say what yall want but hugo is a great actor ...and i feel he didnt get to make the villianous splash he wanted to ...he likes deep roles ...the man is got acting talent ...it shouldnt been wasted on a few lines ...they should allowed him to have more of a role ...but at the same time ....the movie was a true movie more than it was a pilot to catch up people who didnt know capt ...as to who he was and how he came to be ........i think thor was a pilot too ...i think and believe and hope the thor 2 and capt 2 will see more bang for the buck now that they have establshed the to characters to the audience

Aaaaaaaaw maaaaaaaan!!! Come on, Hugo!

I really enjoy watching his performance. When he pumps up the machine so the tesseract powers their equipment, I love how he looks around and talks to Zola in amazement. German accent a bit spotty but really don't wanna replace him!!

I'm still kinda bummed about Terence "It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp" Howard left Iron Man.

They're not going to recast because, as he said in his answer, he's contractually obligated to reprise his role if Marvel comes calling. As a professional, it doesn't matter what he'd prefer...he signed on the dotted line and Marvel paid him. He doesn't have the choice of saying "no." If his phone rings, he's going to have to show up for work, just like we all must. I doubt he'd raise hell about it because he's a veteran actor. He might not like it, but he'd show up.

He's blunt and open with his answer, and I imagine there are tons of actors who are doing projects they don't want to do right now -- we just don't know about it. Sometimes these movies really are just jobs, complete with all the b/s we don't like about our jobs.

While it would be easier to replace him as the Red Skull, I would prefer to see Hugo Weaving continue with the part. He's an amazing actor, 'nuff said.

"I think I’ve done my dash with that sort of film. It was good to do it and try it out, but to be honest, it’s not the sort of film I seek out and really am excited by."

???Really??? Did he just say that? I mean, I like the guy as an actor but let's look at a few of his movies that are (I guess, based on his statement) his sort of films (and nothing like "comic booky movies):

The Matrix (trilogy)
The Lord of the Rings (trilogy, again)
V for Vendetta
The Wolfman
Transformers (yet another trilogy)
Cloud Atlas and, of course
The Hobbit (yeah, you guessed it, a trilogy)

So, what I'm saying is, I just don't really understand his statement. Am I alone in my logic?

I dont get it. Why sign a contract if you dont want to be in those type of movies? You knew what you were getting into in the first place. Id rather have the same person but not if they wont put their all into the role. Recast this Aussie asshole and move on. Oh yeah, Marvel...bring back Terrence Howard for Rhodie cos I really dont like Cheadle. I really dislike Don Cheadle. Really.

He just doesn't want his face covered up..the vanity of most actors.

I like him as an actor... Didn't love him as Red Skull.. I didn't get the Villan, border line psycho, brilliant strategist vibe from him. I more so got a guy who was jealous Steve got the serum from Dr Erskin, and a bad accent. He seemed robotic IMO.
Hiddleston was Loki to the core... Hugo seems like he didn't care and you could tell.

I personally think they should move on from him, but also I'd cast him as a politician in future movies to setup that Red Skull infiltrating the US government angle at some point

The make up job was superb and his outfits were pretty spot on. I thought he did a solid acting job with a pitifully underwritten part. He was classic mustache twirling villain, with little depth or backstory. Blame the writers for that. I don't know why he had to be a scientist. Do these movies ever tire of the mad scientist idea? His comic background of a physically abused son, beating by his father that is spotted as a bellhop by Adolf Hitler is far more intriguing.
