Marvel Co-President on Filming Captain America in London

LA Times reports that Captain America: The First Avenger was originally to be shot in L.A, but an executive says it made economic sense to go to London. Check it Out!

For the original Iron Man & it's hit sequel, and Marvel's next release, "Thor,", (which was also filmed mostly locally including at the Getty Center in Brentwood), filming was based on a stage at Raleigh Studios in Manhattan Beach.

But the studio, which was acquired by Walt Disney Co. last year, concluded that London was the best location for "Captain America," largely because the story is set in Europe and will feature a number of scenes in London such as Piccadilly Circus, and also because of favorable tax incentives.

That decision was a blow to L.A.'s below-the-line community, which had been banking on the project to employ hundreds of crew members at a time when relatively few big-budget features are shot locally, thanks to rising competition from other states and countries.

D'Esposito, who was recently recognized by the Los Angeles City Council for his efforts to keep production in Hollywood, said he had strongly considered L.A.

"I actually had location scouts here to see what could be done,'' he said. "But it would have required so much visual-effects work and set construction, it didn't make sense."

D'Esposito acknowledged that Britain's film incentive, which offers a 20% to 25% payable tax credit on qualified expenditures, was another factor. Marvel could not apply for a tax credit from California's program because the film's budget, in the $140-million range, would make it ineligible, said D'Esposito, who personally lobbied California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to enact a film tax program, which took effect last year. California's program excludes films costing more than $75 million.

"This is one reason many advocate that our state's incentive program be revised," said Paul Audley, president of FilmL.A. Inc., which handles film permits for the L.A. area.

"These are tough financial times right now that could pressure us to look at other locations,'' he added. "But we have every intention of shooting the majority of films here."

Starring Chris Evans, Hugo Weaving, Samuel L. Jackson, and many more big names to come, filming begins June 28th, while the film directed by Joe Johnston, will be on the big screen July 22nd next year.

DCMF: Though it worked successfully with Iron Man 2, I think Marvel is learning (or down to only option) to do less green screen, and actual location or at least actual surroundings. Like Chris Hemsworth 'Thor' said, when he walked on set, it felt like they were in Asgard. And now with Captain America filming supposed scenes including the Piccadilly Circus in London, it's gonna be great. I really think this Period-peace will be Huge. Can't wait.

Filming in London was a great and logical move. I'm excited to see how the WW2-Europe setting turns out.

I wonder if this film will be pushed back even further than the July 22nd, 2011 date, mainly due to no air traffic in Europe thanks to the Iceland volcano.

I wish CAPTAIN AMERICA can be filmed in Germany and Italy for this Patriotic Soldier battle against the Nazis. In the Modern-Millenium version of CAPTAIN AMERICA we shall see him and go fight in Iran and Iraq and I hope that will be rumored to the next sequel.

I'm always happy to know that they're filming on location instead of doing the whole green screen business so this is actually nice :')

A backdrop of the London Blitz will be awesome. This all seems pretty logical. Also, all movie Nazis have English accents so it should work well. : ) I'm making a stand: no Cockney Nazis!

I think this is a good thing. Real locations always look better than green screened effects. There is something about natural lighting that can't be duplicated. I am hoping for one day that they do Namor. Perhaps they will do it in Florida, that would be awesome for our economy.

@Number21 YESS. If they do Namor in Florida there will finally be somewhere close to me.

Having it filmed in Europe makes perfect sense. They have boat loads of historical resources to ensure greater accuracy. It's not like Hollywood isn't going to be having a load of other films done locally.

Hollywood is so mest up. The same stars that want higher taxes make sure their films and businesses are done out of California because of the crazy taxes there. A lot of studios go to Vancouver now. Pretty sad Hollywood. It used to be the place to be to get acting work, now no one can afford to be there.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I always like to see "Filmed on location at...(actual location)" as oppose to green screen work. I understand it's necessary to make a movie that can make you do a Keanu "Whoa", but I'm with Gunner.
Plus, will a younger Nick Fury be present in the WWII scenes, 'cos that would ROCK! (but they'd have to explain the Infinity Formula as well as the Super Soldier Serum)

This only makes sense. If you read the comics you will see that during WWII Cap spent almost NO TIME fighting on the front lines in East L.A. In fact most of his time was spent fighting in Nazi occupied Europe!

All joking aside I really do think it is a smart move and that it will give us a much better movie. While I am all for keeping the greenbacks at home... This is a smart move.

Just visualize the opening scene from Saving Private Ryan ......NOW THROW THE INVADERS INTO THAT MIX AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS!!!

Yeah a Union Jack cameo would be cool. I mean a full cameo. Not a hint. He should be pretty brutal too. He has been witness to alot of death during the war. He should be a pissed off, gloves are off kind of Hero.
